49 Oigan esto, pueblos todos;
escuchen, habitantes todos del mundo,
2 tanto débiles como poderosos,
lo mismo los ricos que los pobres.
3 Mi boca hablará con sabiduría;
la reflexión de mi corazón será muy inteligente.
4 Inclinaré mi oído al proverbio;
propondré mi enigma al son del arpa:
5 ¿Por qué he de temer en tiempos de desgracia
cuando me rodee la maldad de mis opresores?
6 ¿Temeré a los que confían en sus riquezas
y se jactan de sus muchas posesiones?
7 Nadie puede salvar a nadie
ni pagarle a Dios rescate por la vida.
8 Tal rescate es muy costoso;
ningún pago es suficiente
9 para vivir por siempre
sin ver la fosa.
10 Nadie puede negar que todos mueren,
que sabios e insensatos perecen por igual
y que sus riquezas se dejan a otros.
11 Aunque tuvieron tierras a su nombre,
sus tumbas serán[a] su hogar eterno,
su morada por todas las generaciones.
12 La gente rica no perdura;
al igual que las bestias, perece.
13 Tal es el destino de los que confían en sí mismos;
y el de sus seguidores que aprueban lo que ellos dicen. Selah
14 Como ovejas guiadas por la muerte,
están destinados al sepulcro.[b]
Sus cuerpos se consumirán allí,
lejos de sus mansiones suntuosas.
Por la mañana los justos prevalecerán sobre ellos.
15 Pero Dios me rescatará de las garras de la muerte[c]
y con él me llevará. Selah
16 No te asombre ver que alguien se enriquezca
y aumente el esplendor de su casa,
17 porque al morir no se llevará nada
ni con él descenderá su esplendor.
18 Aunque en vida se considere dichoso,
y la gente lo elogie por sus logros,
19 irá a reunirse con sus ancestros,
sin que vuelva jamás a ver la luz.
20 La gente rica carece de entendimiento;
al igual que las bestias, perece.

1 Voor de leider van het koor. Een lied voor de Korachieten.[a]
2 Volken, luister!
Bewoners van de aarde, let goed op!
3 Luister, wie je ook bent,
arm of rijk!
4 Ik zal alleen wijze dingen zeggen,
alleen verstandige gedachten uitspreken.
5 Ik heb geluisterd naar wijze woorden.
Die zal ik jullie nu vertellen terwijl ik op mijn harp speel.
6 Waarom zou ik bang zijn in moeilijke tijden?
Waarom zou ik bang zijn als slechte mensen mij kwaad willen doen?
7 Zij vertrouwen op hun geld.
Ze scheppen op over hun rijkdom.
8 Maar niemand van hen kan de dood afkopen.
Niemand kan aan God de prijs voor een leven betalen.
9 Want de prijs voor een leven is veel te hoog.
Wat je ook biedt, het is nooit genoeg.
10 Niemand kan er voor zorgen
dat hij altijd zal blijven leven,
dat hij nooit in het graf zal komen.
11 Nee, we zien dat alle mensen sterven.
Het maakt niet uit of ze wijs zijn, of dwaas en onverstandig.
En wat ze bezaten, gaat naar andere mensen.
12 Maar ze verbeelden zich
dat ze voor eeuwig zullen blijven bestaan,
dat hun familie voor altijd in hun huis zal wonen.
Ze noemen hun land trots naar zichzelf.
13 Maar met al hun rijkdom
zullen ze toch niet eeuwig blijven bestaan.
Ze sterven, net als de dieren.
14 Het is dwaas dat ze zo denken en leven.
Maar hun kinderen denken dat het wijs is.
15 Toch zullen ze tenslotte sterven.
De dood neemt hen weg.
In het graf zal hun lichaam vergaan.
De mensen die leefden zoals God het wil,
zullen later over hen heersen.
16 Maar míj zal God redden uit de macht van het dodenrijk.
Hij zal mij meenemen.
17 Wees niet bang als iemand rijk wordt
en steeds meer bezit.
18 Want als hij sterft, neemt hij er niets van mee.
Zijn rijkdom gaat niet mee naar het dodenrijk.
19 Misschien vindt hij zichzelf erg gelukkig.
Misschien wordt hij door iedereen geprezen voor wat hij heeft gedaan.
20 Maar toch zal hij sterven, net als zijn voorouders.
Nooit meer zal hij het daglicht zien.
21 Met mensen die rijk zijn maar die geen verstand hebben,
loopt het niet beter af dan met de dieren:
ze sterven, net als zij.

- Psalmen 49:1 De familie van Korach was één van de families uit de stam van Levi die dienst deden bij het heiligdom van de Heer. De Korachieten werkten daar als poortwachters en zangers.

49 Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
2 Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
6 They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
8 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
