Psalm 43[a]

Vindicate me, God, and champion my cause
against an unfaithful nation;
rescue me from the deceitful and unjust person.(A)
For you are the God of my refuge.
Why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about in sorrow
because of the enemy’s oppression?(B)

Send your light and your truth; let them lead me.(C)
Let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to your dwelling place.(D)
Then I will come to the altar of God,
to God, my greatest joy.(E)
I will praise you with the lyre,
God, my God.(F)

Why, my soul, are you so dejected?
Why are you in such turmoil?
Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him,
my Savior and my God.(G)

  1. 30:1 Or son of Jakeh from Massa; Pr 31:1
  2. 30:1 Hb uncertain. Sometimes read with different word division as oration: I am weary, God, I am weary, God, and I am exhausted, or oration: I am not God, I am not God, that I should prevail. LXX reads My son, fear my words and when you have received them repent. The man says these things to the believers in God, and I pause.
  3. 30:2 Lit I am more stupid than a man
  4. 30:5 Lit refined

If anyone teaches false doctrine and does not agree with the sound teaching of our Lord(A) Jesus Christ and with the teaching that promotes godliness,(B) he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in disputes and arguments over words.(C) From these come envy,(D) quarreling,(E) slander,(F) evil suspicions, and constant disagreement among people whose minds are depraved and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way to material gain.[a](G) But godliness with contentment is great gain.(H) For we brought nothing into the world, and[b] we can take nothing out.(I) If we have food and clothing,[c] we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root[d] of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith(J) and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Fight the Good Fight

11 But you, man of God, flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,(K) endurance,(L) and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight(M) of the faith. Take hold of eternal life(N) to which you were called and about which you have made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the presence of God, who gives life to all,(O) and of Christ Jesus, who gave a good confession before Pontius Pilate,(P) I charge you 14 to keep this command without fault or failure until the appearing(Q) of our Lord(R) Jesus Christ. 15 God will bring this about in his own time.(S) He is the blessed and only(T) Sovereign, the King of kings,(U) and the Lord of lords,(V) 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light,(W) whom no one has seen or can see,(X) to him be honor and eternal power.(Y) Amen.(Z)
