    Why so disturbed^(O) within me?
Put your hope in God,^(P)
    for I will yet praise^(Q) him,
    my Savior^(R) and my God.^(S)

⁶ My soul is downcast within me;
    therefore I will remember^(T) you
from the land of the Jordan,^(U)
    the heights of Hermon^(V)—from Mount Mizar.
⁷ Deep calls to deep^(W)
    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me.^(X)

⁸ By day the Lord directs his love,^(Y)
    at night^(Z) his song^(AA) is with me—
    a prayer to the God of my life.^(AB)

⁹ I say to God my Rock,^(AC)
    “Why have you forgotten^(AD) me?
Why must I go about mourning,^(AE)
    oppressed^(AF) by the enemy?”^(AG)
10 My bones suffer mortal agony^(AH)
    as my foes taunt^(AI) me,
saying to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”^(AJ)

¹¹ Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.^(AK)

³ How long will you assault me?
    Would all of you throw me down—
    this leaning wall,^(G) this tottering fence?
⁴ Surely they intend to topple me
    from my lofty place;
    they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
    but in their hearts they curse.^[b](H)

⁵ Yes, my soul, find rest in God;^(I)
    my hope comes from him.
⁶ Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
⁷ My salvation and my honor depend on God^[c];
    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.^(J)
8 Trust in him at all times, you people;^(K)
    pour out your hearts to him,^(L)
    for God is our refuge.

⁹ Surely the lowborn^(M) are but a breath,^(N)
    the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance,^(O) they are nothing;
    together they are only a breath.
¹⁰ Do not trust in extortion^(P)
    or put vain hope in stolen goods;^(Q)
though your riches increase,
    do not set your heart on them.^(R)

¹¹ One thing God has spoken,
    two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,^(S)
12     and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;^(T)
and, “You reward everyone
    according to what they have done.”^(U)

² I have seen you in the sanctuary^(X)
    and beheld your power and your glory.^(Y)
3 Because your love is better than life,^(Z)
    my lips will glorify you.
⁴ I will praise you as long as I live,^(AA)
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.^(AB)
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;^(AC)
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

⁶ On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.^(AD)
7 Because you are my help,^(AE)
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.^(AF)
8 I cling to you;^(AG)
    your right hand upholds me.^(AH)

⁹ Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;^(AI)
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.^(AJ)
10 They will be given over to the sword^(AK)
    and become food for jackals.^(AL)

¹¹ But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by God will glory in him,^(AM)
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.^(AN)

² But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;^(B)
    I had nearly lost my foothold.^(C)
3 For I envied^(D) the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.^(E)

⁴ They have no struggles;
    their bodies are healthy and strong.^[a]
5 They are free^(F) from common human burdens;
    they are not plagued by human ills.
⁶ Therefore pride^(G) is their necklace;^(H)
    they clothe themselves with violence.^(I)
7 From their callous hearts^(J) comes iniquity^[b];
    their evil imaginations have no limits.
⁸ They scoff, and speak with malice;^(K)
    with arrogance^(L) they threaten oppression.^(M)
9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
    and their tongues take possession of the earth.
¹⁰ Therefore their people turn to them
    and drink up waters in abundance.^[c]
11 They say, “How would God know?
    Does the Most High know anything?”

¹² This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,^(N) they go on amassing wealth.^(O)

¹³ Surely in vain^(P) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.^(Q)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,^(R)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

¹⁵ If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
¹⁶ When I tried to understand^(S) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
¹⁷ till I entered the sanctuary^(T) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.^(U)

¹⁸ Surely you place them on slippery ground;^(V)
    you cast them down to ruin.^(W)
19 How suddenly^(X) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away^(Y) by terrors!
²⁰ They are like a dream^(Z) when one awakes;^(AA)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.^(AB)

²¹ When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
²² I was senseless^(AC) and ignorant;
    I was a brute beast^(AD) before you.

²³ Yet I am always with you;
    you hold me by my right hand.^(AE)
24 You guide^(AF) me with your counsel,^(AG)
    and afterward you will take me into glory.
²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but you?^(AH)
    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.^(AI)
26 My flesh and my heart^(AJ) may fail,^(AK)
    but God is the strength^(AL) of my heart
    and my portion^(AM) forever.

²⁷ Those who are far from you will perish;^(AN)
    you destroy all who are unfaithful^(AO) to you.
²⁸ But as for me, it is good to be near God.^(AP)
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;^(AQ)
    I will tell of all your deeds.^(AR)
