David wrote this song for the music leader.
A prayer[a]
41 If someone is kind to poor people,
God blesses him.
When he is in trouble,
the Lord rescues him.
2 The Lord keeps him safe.
The Lord saves his life!
God causes him to be happy
here in the land where he lives.
The Lord will not put him under the power of his enemies.
3 The Lord takes care of him
when he is ill in bed.
Whenever he is ill,
you will make him completely well again.
4 I said, ‘Lord be kind to me
and forgive me.
I have done wrong things against you,
but please make me well again.’
5 My enemies say cruel things about me.
They say, ‘Surely he must die soon!
Then everyone will forget about him.’
6 When they come to see me,
they say that they are my friends.
But they think of ways to make me ashamed.
When they leave,
they tell everyone bad things about me.
7 All the people who hate me
insult me to other people.
My enemies make plans to hurt me.
8 They say, ‘He has a dangerous disease.
He will never get up from his bed.’
9 Even my special friend has turned against me.
He was someone that I trusted.
I often ate food with him in my home.[b]
10 But you, Lord, please be kind to me.
Raise me up to be well again.
Then I can punish my enemies as they have punished me.[c]
11 They have not won against me,
so I know that you are pleased with me!
12 You continue to help me because I do what is right.
You will let me stay near to you for ever.
13 Let us all praise the Lord,
who is Israel's great God!
Yes, praise him now and for ever!
Amen! Amen!

- 41:1 David wrote this psalm when he was ill. He says he was ill because he had not obeyed God's laws. When David was ill, many people came to visit him. David thought that they were his friends, but they were not. They wanted him to die so that there would be a new king. One of David's visitors was his best friend, but he was not kind to David. It is only God who can really take care of David.
- 41:9 Jesus used these words to speak about Judas. See John 13:18.
- 41:10 David was king, so it was his job to punish his enemies for the bad things that they had done to him.

41 Blessed is he who considers the [a]poor;
The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.
2 The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive,
And he will be blessed on the earth;
(A)You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.
3 The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness;
You will [b]sustain him on his sickbed.
4 I said, “Lord, be merciful to me;
(B)Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.”
5 My enemies speak evil of me:
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
6 And if he comes to see me, he speaks [c]lies;
His heart gathers iniquity to itself;
When he goes out, he tells it.
7 All who hate me whisper together against me;
Against me they [d]devise my hurt.
8 “An[e] evil disease,” they say, “clings to him.
And now that he lies down, he will rise up no more.”
9 (C)Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted,
(D)Who ate my bread,
Has [f]lifted up his heel against me.
10 But You, O Lord, be merciful to me, and raise me up,
That I may repay them.
11 By this I know that You are well pleased with me,
Because my enemy does not triumph over me.
12 As for me, You uphold me in my integrity,
And (E)set me before Your face forever.
13 (F)Blessed be the Lord God of Israel
From everlasting to everlasting!

1 Ferice de cel ce îngrijeşte de sărac[a],
căci Domnul îl va scăpa în ziua cea rea.
2 Domnul îl va păzi, îl va ţine în viaţă,
îl va binecuvânta în ţară
şi nu-l va lăsa la bunul plac al duşmanilor lui.
3 Domnul îl va întări când va fi pe patul de suferinţă,
iar patul în care suferea va fi strâns.
4 Cât despre mine, eu am zis: „Doamne, ai milă de mine!“
Vindecă-mă, căci am păcătuit împotriva Ta!
5 Duşmanii mei vorbesc despre mine cu răutate, spunând:
„Când va muri şi-i va pieri numele?“
6 Chiar dacă vine vreunul să mă vadă,
grăieşte făţarnic[b], în timp ce inima lui adună duşmănie
pe care o împrăştie când iese afară.
7 Potrivnicii mei şuşotesc cu toţii împotriva mea
şi gândesc ce e mai rău pentru mine.
8 „O boală necruţătoare l-a atins!
Nu se va mai scula din locul în care s-a culcat!“
9 Chiar şi prietenul apropiat în care m-am încrezut,
cel ce mănâncă pâinea mea,
şi-a ridicat călcâiul împotriva mea!
10 Tu însă, Doamne, ai milă de mine!
Ridică-mă, ca să le dau răsplata cuvenită!
11 Voi şti că-Ţi găseşti plăcerea în mine
prin aceea că duşmanul meu nu va triumfa asupra mea.
12 Cât despre mine, Tu mă sprijini în integritatea mea
şi mă aşezi în prezenţa Ta pe vecie.
13 Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel,
din veşnicie în veşnicie.

For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 Blessed(A) are those who have regard for the weak;(B)
the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.(C)
2 The Lord protects(D) and preserves them—(E)
they are counted among the blessed in the land—(F)
he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.(G)
3 The Lord sustains them on their sickbed(H)
and restores them from their bed of illness.(I)
4 I said, “Have mercy(J) on me, Lord;
heal(K) me, for I have sinned(L) against you.”
5 My enemies say of me in malice,
“When will he die and his name perish?(M)”
6 When one of them comes to see me,
he speaks falsely,(N) while his heart gathers slander;(O)
then he goes out and spreads(P) it around.
7 All my enemies whisper together(Q) against me;
they imagine the worst for me, saying,
8 “A vile disease has afflicted him;
he will never get up(R) from the place where he lies.”
9 Even my close friend,(S)
someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
