Faith Persevering in Trial(A)

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

40 I (B)waited patiently for the Lord;
And He inclined to me,
And heard my cry.
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
Out of (C)the miry clay,
And (D)set my feet upon a rock,
And established my steps.
(E)He has put a new song in my mouth—
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the Lord.

(F)Blessed is that man who makes the Lord his trust,
And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
(G)Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works
Which You have done;
(H)And Your thoughts toward us
Cannot be recounted to You in order;
If I would declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be numbered.

(I)Sacrifice and offering You did not desire;
My ears You have opened.
Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require.
Then I said, “Behold, I come;
In the scroll of the book it is written of me.
(J)I delight to do Your will, O my God,
And Your law is (K)within my heart.”

(L)I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness
In the great assembly;
Indeed, (M)I do not restrain my lips,
O Lord, You Yourself know.
10 (N)I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart;
I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth
From the great assembly.

11 Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O Lord;
(O)Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.
12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me;
(P)My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up;
They are more than the hairs of my head;
Therefore my heart fails me.

13 (Q)Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me;
O Lord, make haste to help me!
14 (R)Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion
Who seek to destroy my [a]life;
Let them be driven backward and brought to dishonor
Who wish me evil.
15 Let them be (S)confounded because of their shame,
Who say to me, “Aha, aha!”

16 (T)Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
Let such as love Your salvation (U)say continually,
“The Lord be magnified!”
17 (V)But I am poor and needy;
(W)Yet the Lord thinks upon me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
Do not delay, O my God.

  1. Psalm 40:14 Lit. soul

40 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,

I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest.

10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

11 Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me.

14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.

15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.

16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.

17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

Salmo 40 (39)

No hay quien se iguale a ti

40 Al maestro del coro. Salmo de David.
Puse mi esperanza en el Señor,
él se inclinó hacia mí
y escuchó mi lamento.
Me sacó de la fosa desolada,
del fango cenagoso;
me alzó sobre una roca
afianzando mis pasos.
Puso en mi boca un canto nuevo,
una alabanza a nuestro Dios;
cuantos lo ven, lo veneran
y confían en el Señor.
Feliz quien ha puesto
en el Señor su confianza
y no sigue a los idólatras
perdidos en la mentira.
Tú, Señor y Dios mío,
has multiplicado tus maravillas
y tus proyectos para nosotros.
¡No hay quien a ti se iguale!
Los pregonaría, los proclamaría,
pero son demasiados para contarlos.
No quieres sacrificios ni ofrendas;
tú, que me has abierto el oído,
no deseas ni víctimas ni holocaustos.
Entonces yo dije: “Aquí vengo,
en el libro se ha escrito de mí:
Quiero hacer tu voluntad,
tu ley llevo en mis entrañas”.
10 He pregonado tu justicia
en la gran asamblea;
no he cerrado mis labios
y tú, Señor, lo sabes.
11 No he escondido tu justicia
en lo más hondo de mí,
sino que he proclamado
tu fidelidad y salvación;
no he ocultado tu amor y tu verdad
ante la gran asamblea.
12 Tú, Señor, no apartes
de mí tu misericordia,
que tu verdad y tu amor
por siempre me protejan.
13 Pues sobre mí se ciernen
males que no tienen fin,
se acumulan mis pecados
y no puedo ver nada;
son más que los pelos de mi cabeza
y las fuerzas me fallan.
14 Señor, ven a librarme;
Señor, date prisa en ayudarme.
15 Queden confundidos y humillados
los que buscan quitarme la vida,
que retrocedan y se avergüencen
los que pretenden dañarme.
16 Sean destruidos por su infamia
los que se burlan de mí.
17 Que en ti se alegren y gocen
todos cuantos te buscan;
los que anhelan tu salvación
digan en todo momento:
“¡Sea alabado el Señor!”.
18 Soy pobre y necesitado,
pero mi Dios cuidará de mí.
Tú eres mi ayuda y mi salvación,
¡no tardes, Dios mío!
