Psalm 39
Living Bible
39 I said to myself, I’m going to quit complaining! I’ll keep quiet, especially when the ungodly are around me. 2-3 But as I stood there silently the turmoil within me grew to the bursting point. The more I mused, the hotter the fires inside. Then at last I spoke and pled with God: 4 Lord, help me to realize how brief my time on earth will be. Help me to know that I am here for but a moment more. 5-6 My life is no longer than my hand! My whole lifetime is but a moment to you. Proud man! Frail as breath! A shadow! And all his busy rushing ends in nothing. He heaps up riches for someone else to spend. 7 And so, Lord, my only hope is in you.
8 Save me from being overpowered by my sins, for even fools will mock me then.
9 Lord, I am speechless before you. I will not open my mouth to speak one word of complaint, for my punishment is from you.[a]
10 Lord, don’t hit me anymore—I am exhausted beneath your hand. 11 When you punish a man for his sins, he is destroyed, for he is as fragile as a moth-infested cloth; yes, man is frail as breath.
12 Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my cry! Don’t sit back, unmindful of my tears. For I am your guest. I am a traveler passing through the earth, as all my fathers were.
13 Spare me, Lord! Let me recover and be filled with happiness again before my death.

Salmi 39
Nuova Riveduta 2006
La fragilità dell’uomo
39 (A)Al direttore del coro. Per Iedutun.
Salmo di Davide.
Io dicevo: «Vigilerò sulla mia condotta
per non peccare con le mie parole;
metterò un freno alla mia bocca,
finché l’empio mi starà davanti».
2 Come un muto sono stato in silenzio,
ho taciuto senz’averne bene;
anzi, il mio dolore s’è inasprito.
3 Il mio cuore ardeva dentro di me;
mentre meditavo, un fuoco s’è acceso;
la mia durata è come nulla davanti a te;
certo, ogni uomo, benché saldo in piedi, non è che vanità. [Pausa]
6 Certo, l’uomo va e viene come un’ombra;
certo, si affanna per quel che è vanità;
egli accumula ricchezze, senza sapere chi le raccoglierà.
7 E ora, o Signore, che aspetto?
La mia speranza è in te.
8 Liberami da tutti i miei peccati;
distruggi come un tarlo quel che ha di più caro;
certo, ogni uomo non è che vanità. [Pausa]
12 O Signore, ascolta la mia preghiera,
porgi orecchio al mio grido;
non essere insensibile alle mie lacrime,
poiché io sono uno straniero davanti a te,
un pellegrino, come tutti i miei padri.
13 Distogli il tuo sguardo, perché io respiri,
prima di andarmene e scomparire.
Psalm 39
New International Version
Psalm 39[a]
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.
1 I said, “I will watch my ways(A)
and keep my tongue from sin;(B)
I will put a muzzle on my mouth(C)
while in the presence of the wicked.”
2 So I remained utterly silent,(D)
not even saying anything good.
But my anguish(E) increased;
3 my heart grew hot(F) within me.
While I meditated,(G) the fire(H) burned;
then I spoke with my tongue:
4 “Show me, Lord, my life’s end
and the number of my days;(I)
let me know how fleeting(J) my life is.(K)
5 You have made my days(L) a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,(M)
even those who seem secure.[b]
6 “Surely everyone goes around(N) like a mere phantom;(O)
in vain they rush about,(P) heaping up wealth(Q)
without knowing whose it will finally be.(R)
7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.(S)
8 Save me(T) from all my transgressions;(U)
do not make me the scorn(V) of fools.
9 I was silent;(W) I would not open my mouth,(X)
for you are the one who has done this.(Y)
10 Remove your scourge from me;
I am overcome by the blow(Z) of your hand.(AA)
11 When you rebuke(AB) and discipline(AC) anyone for their sin,
you consume(AD) their wealth like a moth(AE)—
surely everyone is but a breath.(AF)
