Instruction in Wisdom
Of David.
37 Do not be agitated by evildoers;
do not envy those who do wrong.(A)
2 For they wither quickly like grass
and wilt like tender green plants.(B)
3 Trust in the Lord and do what is good;(C)
dwell in the land and live securely.[a](D)
4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you your heart’s desires.(E)
5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act,(F)
6 making your righteousness shine like the dawn,
your justice like the noonday.(G)
7 Be silent before the Lord and wait expectantly for him;(H)
do not be agitated by one who prospers in his way,
by the person who carries out evil plans.(I)
8 Refrain from anger and give up your rage;
do not be agitated – it can only bring harm.(J)
9 For evildoers will be destroyed,
but those who put their hope in the Lord
will inherit the land.(K)
10 A little while, and the wicked person will be no more;
though you look for him, he will not be there.(L)
11 But the humble will inherit the land(M)
and will enjoy abundant prosperity.(N)
12 The wicked person schemes against the righteous
and gnashes his teeth at him.(O)
13 The Lord laughs at him(P)
because he sees that his day is coming.(Q)
14 The wicked have drawn the sword and strung the[b] bow
to bring down the poor and needy
and to slaughter those whose way is upright.(R)
15 Their swords will enter their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.(S)
16 The little that the righteous person has is better
than the abundance of many wicked people.(T)
17 For the arms of the wicked will be broken,(U)
but the Lord supports the righteous.(V)
18 The Lord watches over the blameless all their days,
and their inheritance will last for ever.(W)
19 They will not be disgraced in times of adversity;
they will be satisfied in days of hunger.(X)
20 But the wicked will perish;
the Lord’s enemies, like the glory of the pastures,
will fade away –
they will fade away like smoke.(Y)
21 The wicked person borrows and does not repay,
but the righteous one is gracious and giving.(Z)
22 Those who are blessed by the Lord will inherit the land,
but those cursed by him will be destroyed.(AA)
23 A person’s steps are established by the Lord,
and he takes pleasure in his way.(AB)
24 Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed,
because the Lord supports him with his hand.(AC)
25 I have been young and now I am old,
yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned
or his children begging for bread.(AD)
26 He is always generous, always lending,
and his children are a blessing.(AE)
27 Turn away from evil, do what is good,
and settle permanently.(AF)
28 For the Lord loves justice
and will not abandon his faithful ones.(AG)
They are kept safe for ever,
but the children of the wicked will be destroyed.(AH)
29 The righteous will inherit the land
and dwell in it permanently.(AI)
30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom;
his tongue speaks what is just.(AJ)
31 The instruction of his God is in his heart;
his steps do not falter.(AK)
32 The wicked one lies in wait for the righteous
and intends to kill him;(AL)
33 the Lord will not leave him
in the power of the wicked one
or allow him to be condemned when he is judged.(AM)
34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
and he will exalt you to inherit the land.
You will watch when the wicked are destroyed.(AN)
35 I have seen a wicked, violent person
well-rooted,[c] like a flourishing native tree.(AO)
36 Then I[d] passed by and noticed he was gone;
I searched for him, but he could not be found.(AP)
37 Watch the blameless and observe the upright,
for the person of peace will have a future.[e](AQ)
38 But transgressors will all be eliminated;
the future of the wicked will be destroyed.(AR)
39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord,
their refuge in a time of distress.(AS)
40 The Lord helps and delivers them;
he will deliver them from the wicked and will save them
because they take refuge in him.(AT)

37 De David. Ne t'irrite pas contre les méchants, N'envie pas ceux qui font le mal.
2 Car ils sont fauchés aussi vite que l'herbe, Et ils se flétrissent comme le gazon vert.
3 Confie-toi en l'Éternel, et pratique le bien; Aie le pays pour demeure et la fidélité pour pâture.
4 Fais de l'Éternel tes délices, Et il te donnera ce que ton coeur désire.
5 Recommande ton sort à l'Éternel, Mets en lui ta confiance, et il agira.
6 Il fera paraître ta justice comme la lumière, Et ton droit comme le soleil à son midi.
7 Garde le silence devant l'Éternel, et espère en lui; Ne t'irrite pas contre celui qui réussit dans ses voies, Contre l'homme qui vient à bout de ses mauvais desseins.
8 Laisse la colère, abandonne la fureur; Ne t'irrite pas, ce serait mal faire.
9 Car les méchants seront retranchés, Et ceux qui espèrent en l'Éternel posséderont le pays.
10 Encore un peu de temps, et le méchant n'est plus; Tu regardes le lieu où il était, et il a disparu.
11 Les misérables possèdent le pays, Et ils jouissent abondamment de la paix.
12 Le méchant forme des projets contre le juste, Et il grince des dents contre lui.
13 Le Seigneur se rit du méchant, Car il voit que son jour arrive.
14 Les méchants tirent le glaive, Ils bandent leur arc, Pour faire tomber le malheureux et l'indigent, Pour égorger ceux dont la voie est droite.
15 Leur glaive entre dans leur propre coeur, Et leurs arcs se brisent.
16 Mieux vaut le peu du juste Que l'abondance de beaucoup de méchants;
17 Car les bras des méchants seront brisés, Mais l'Éternel soutient les justes.
18 L'Éternel connaît les jours des hommes intègres, Et leur héritage dure à jamais.
19 Ils ne sont pas confondus au temps du malheur, Et ils sont rassasiés aux jours de la famine.
20 Mais les méchants périssent, Et les ennemis de l'Éternel, comme les plus beaux pâturages; Ils s'évanouissent, ils s'évanouissent en fumée.
21 Le méchant emprunte, et il ne rend pas; Le juste est compatissant, et il donne.
22 Car ceux que bénit l'Éternel possèdent le pays, Et ceux qu'il maudit sont retranchés.
23 L'Éternel affermit les pas de l'homme, Et il prend plaisir à sa voie;
24 S'il tombe, il n'est pas terrassé, Car l'Éternel lui prend la main.
25 J'ai été jeune, j'ai vieilli; Et je n'ai point vu le juste abandonné, Ni sa postérité mendiant son pain.
26 Toujours il est compatissant, et il prête; Et sa postérité est bénie.
27 Détourne-toi du mal, fais le bien, Et possède à jamais ta demeure.
28 Car l'Éternel aime la justice, Et il n'abandonne pas ses fidèles; Ils sont toujours sous sa garde, Mais la postérité des méchants est retranchée.
29 Les justes posséderont le pays, Et ils y demeureront à jamais.
30 La bouche du juste annonce la sagesse, Et sa langue proclame la justice.
31 La loi de son Dieu est dans son coeur; Ses pas ne chancellent point.
32 Le méchant épie le juste, Et il cherche à le faire mourir.
33 L'Éternel ne le laisse pas entre ses mains, Et il ne le condamne pas quand il est en jugement.
34 Espère en l'Éternel, garde sa voie, Et il t'élèvera pour que tu possèdes le pays; Tu verras les méchants retranchés.
35 J'ai vu le méchant dans toute sa puissance; Il s'étendait comme un arbre verdoyant.
36 Il a passé, et voici, il n'est plus; Je le cherche, et il ne se trouve plus.
37 Observe celui qui est intègre, et regarde celui qui est droit; Car il y a une postérité pour l'homme de paix.
38 Mais les rebelles sont tous anéantis, La postérité des méchants est retranchée.
39 Le salut des justes vient de l'Éternel; Il est leur protecteur au temps de la détresse.
40 L'Éternel les secourt et les délivre; Il les délivre des méchants et les sauve, Parce qu'ils cherchent en lui leur refuge.

1 Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious(A) of those who do wrong;(B)
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,(C)
like green plants they will soon die away.(D)
3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land(E) and enjoy safe pasture.(F)
4 Take delight(G) in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.(H)
5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him(I) and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteous reward(J) shine like the dawn,(K)
your vindication like the noonday sun.
7 Be still(L) before the Lord
and wait patiently(M) for him;
do not fret(N) when people succeed in their ways,(O)
when they carry out their wicked schemes.(P)
8 Refrain from anger(Q) and turn from wrath;
do not fret(R)—it leads only to evil.
9 For those who are evil will be destroyed,(S)
but those who hope(T) in the Lord will inherit the land.(U)
10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;(V)
though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land(W)
and enjoy peace and prosperity.(X)
12 The wicked plot(Y) against the righteous
and gnash their teeth(Z) at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.(AA)
14 The wicked draw the sword(AB)
and bend the bow(AC)
to bring down the poor and needy,(AD)
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,(AE)
and their bows will be broken.(AF)
16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth(AG) of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,(AH)
but the Lord upholds(AI) the righteous.
18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,(AJ)
and their inheritance will endure forever.(AK)
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.
20 But the wicked will perish:(AL)
Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.(AM)
21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously;(AN)
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,
but those he curses(AO) will be destroyed.(AP)
23 The Lord makes firm the steps(AQ)
of the one who delights(AR) in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,(AS)
for the Lord upholds(AT) him with his hand.
25 I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken(AU)
or their children begging(AV) bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;(AW)
their children will be a blessing.[b](AX)
27 Turn from evil and do good;(AY)
then you will dwell in the land forever.(AZ)
28 For the Lord loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones.(BA)
Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed[c];
the offspring of the wicked will perish.(BB)
29 The righteous will inherit the land(BC)
and dwell in it forever.(BD)
30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,(BE)
and their tongues speak what is just.
31 The law of their God is in their hearts;(BF)
their feet do not slip.(BG)
32 The wicked lie in wait(BH) for the righteous,(BI)
intent on putting them to death;
33 but the Lord will not leave them in the power of the wicked
or let them be condemned(BJ) when brought to trial.(BK)
34 Hope in the Lord(BL)
and keep his way.(BM)
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
when the wicked are destroyed,(BN) you will see(BO) it.
35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing(BP) like a luxuriant native tree,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
though I looked for him, he could not be found.(BQ)
