Psalm 36

Human Wickedness and God’s Love

For the choir director. Of David, the Lord’s servant.

¹An oracle within my heart
concerning the transgression of the wicked person:
Dread of God has no effect on him.^[a]^(A)
²For with his flattering opinion of himself,
he does not discover and hate his iniquity.^(B)
³The words from his mouth are malicious and deceptive;^(C)
he has stopped acting wisely and doing good.^(D)
⁴Even on his bed he makes malicious plans.^(E)
He sets himself on a path that is not good,
and he does not reject evil.^(F)

⁵Lord, your faithful love reaches to heaven,
your faithfulness to the clouds.^(G)
⁶Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
your judgments like the deepest sea.^(H)
Lord, you preserve people and animals.^(I)
⁷How priceless your faithful love is, God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.^(J)
⁸They are filled from the abundance of your house.
You let them drink from your refreshing stream.^(K)
⁹For the wellspring of life is with you.^(L)
By means of your light we see light.^(M)

¹⁰Spread your faithful love over those who know you,
and your righteousness over the upright in heart.^(N)
¹¹Do not let the foot of the arrogant come near me
or the hand of the wicked drive me away.^(O)
¹²There! The evildoers have fallen.
They have been thrown down and cannot rise.^(P)

Demonic Influence

4 Now the Spirit^(A) explicitly says that in later times^(B) some will depart from the faith,^(C) paying attention to deceitful spirits^(D) and the teachings of demons,^(E) ²through the hypocrisy^(F) of liars whose consciences^(G) are seared. ³They forbid marriage^(H) and demand abstinence^(I) from foods that God created^(J) to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth. ⁴For everything created by God is good,^(K) and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,^(L) ⁵since it is sanctified by the word of God^(M) and by prayer.

A Good Servant of Jesus Christ

⁶If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith^(N) and the good teaching that you have followed.^(O) ⁷But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths.^(P) Rather, train yourself in godliness.^(Q) ⁸For the training of the body has limited benefit,^(R) but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.^(S) ⁹This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance.^(T) ¹⁰For this reason we labor and strive,^[a] because we have put our hope in the living God,^(U) who is the Savior^(V) of all people,^(W) especially of those who believe.
