Psalm 34

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

^[a] Of David, when he ^(A)changed his behavior before ^(B)Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

34 I will bless the Lord ^(C)at all times;
    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
²My soul ^(D)makes its boast in the Lord;
    let the humble hear and ^(E)be glad.
³Oh, ^(F)magnify the Lord with me,
    and let us exalt his name together!

⁴I ^(G)sought the Lord, and he answered me
    and delivered me from all my fears.
⁵Those who look to him are ^(H)radiant,
    and their faces shall never be ashamed.
⁶^(I)This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
    and ^(J)saved him out of all his troubles.
⁷^(K)The angel of the Lord ^(L)encamps
    around those who fear him, and delivers them.

⁸Oh, ^(M)taste and see that ^(N)the Lord is good!
    ^(O)Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
⁹Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
    for those who fear him have no lack!
¹⁰^(P)The young lions suffer want and hunger;
    but those who ^(Q)seek the Lord lack no good thing.

¹¹^(R)Come, O children, listen to me;
    ^(S)I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
¹²^(T)What man is there who desires life
    and loves many days, that he may ^(U)see good?
¹³^(V)Keep your tongue from evil
    and your lips from ^(W)speaking deceit.
¹⁴^(X)Turn away from evil and do good;
    seek peace and ^(Y)pursue it.

¹⁵^(Z)The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
    ^(AA)and his ears toward their cry.
¹⁶^(AB)The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
    to ^(AC)cut off the memory of them from the earth.
¹⁷^(AD)When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
¹⁸The Lord is near to ^(AE)the brokenhearted
    and saves ^(AF)the crushed in spirit.

¹⁹^(AG)Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
    ^(AH)but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
²⁰He keeps all his bones;
    ^(AI)not one of them is broken.
²¹^(AJ)Affliction will slay the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
²²The Lord ^(AK)redeems the life of his servants;
    none of those who take refuge in him will be ^(AL)condemned.

Judgment on Ammon

49 ^(A)Concerning the Ammonites.

Thus says the Lord:

“Has Israel no sons?
    Has he no heir?
Why then has ^(B)Milcom^[a] ^(C)dispossessed Gad,
    and his people settled in its cities?
²Therefore, behold, the days are coming,
    declares the Lord,
when I will cause ^(D)the battle cry to be heard
    against ^(E)Rabbah of the Ammonites;
it shall become a desolate ^(F)mound,
    and its villages shall be burned with fire;
then Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him,
    says the Lord.

³“Wail, O ^(G)Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste!
    Cry out, O daughters of ^(H)Rabbah!
^(I)Put on sackcloth,
    lament, and run to and fro among the hedges!
For ^(J)Milcom shall go into exile,
    ^(K)with his priests and his officials.
⁴Why do you boast of your valleys,^[b]
    ^(L)O faithless daughter,
^(M)who trusted in her treasures, saying,
    ‘Who will come against me?’
⁵Behold, ^(N)I will bring terror upon you,
    declares the Lord God of hosts,
    from all who are around you,
and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him,
    with none to gather the fugitives.

⁶“But ^(O)afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the Lord.”

Judgment on Edom

⁷Concerning ^(P)Edom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

^(Q)“Is wisdom no more in ^(R)Teman?
    ^(S)Has counsel perished from the prudent?
    ^(T)Has their wisdom vanished?
⁸^(U)Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
    O inhabitants of ^(V)Dedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
    ^(W)the time when I punish him.
⁹^(X)If grape gatherers came to you,
    would they not leave ^(Y)gleanings?
^(Z)If thieves came by night,
    would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
¹⁰^(AA)But I have stripped Esau bare;
    ^(AB)I have uncovered his hiding places,
    and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
    and his neighbors; and ^(AC)he is no more.
¹¹^(AD)Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
    ^(AE)and let your widows trust in me.”

¹²For thus says the Lord: ^(AF)“If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, ^(AG)will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. ¹³^(AH)For I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that ^(AI)Bozrah shall become ^(AJ)a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

¹⁴^(AK)I have heard a message from the Lord,
    and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
^(AL)“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
    and rise up for battle!
¹⁵For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
    despised among mankind.
¹⁶The horror you inspire has deceived you,
    and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,^[c]
    who hold the height of the hill.
Though you ^(AM)make your nest as high as the eagle's,
    I will bring you down from there,
declares the Lord.

¹⁷^(AN)“Edom shall become a horror. ^(AO)Everyone who passes by it will be horrified ^(AP)and will hiss because of all its disasters. ¹⁸^(AQ)As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their ^(AR)neighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, ^(AS)no man shall dwell there, ^(AT)no man shall sojourn in her. ¹⁹^(AU)Behold, ^(AV)like a lion coming up from ^(AW)the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him^[d] run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. ^(AX)For who is like me? ^(AY)Who will summon me? ^(AZ)What shepherd can stand before me? ²⁰Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against ^(BA)Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of ^(BB)Teman: ^(BC)Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. ²¹At the sound of their fall ^(BD)the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. ²²Behold, ^(BE)one shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against ^(BF)Bozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart ^(BG)of a woman in her birth pains.”

Romans 9:1-29

God's Sovereign Choice

9 ^(A)I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— ²that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. ³For ^(B)I could wish that I myself were ^(C)accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,^[a] my kinsmen ^(D)according to the flesh. ⁴They are ^(E)Israelites, and to them belong ^(F)the adoption, ^(G)the glory, ^(H)the covenants, ^(I)the giving of the law, ^(J)the worship, and ^(K)the promises. ⁵To them belong ^(L)the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, ^(M)who is God over all, ^(N)blessed forever. Amen.

⁶But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, ⁷and not all are children of Abraham ^(O)because they are his offspring, but ^(P)“Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” ⁸This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but ^(Q)the children of the promise are counted as offspring. ⁹For this is what the promise said: ^(R)“About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” ¹⁰And not only so, but ^(S)also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, ¹¹though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of ^(T)him who calls— ¹²she was told, ^(U)“The older will serve the younger.” ¹³As it is written, ^(V)“Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

¹⁴What shall we say then? ^(W)Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! ¹⁵For he says to Moses, ^(X)“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” ¹⁶So then it depends not on human will or exertion,^[b] but on God, who has mercy. ¹⁷For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, ^(Y)“For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” ¹⁸So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

¹⁹You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For ^(Z)who can resist his will?” ²⁰But who are you, O man, ^(AA)to answer back to God? ^(AB)Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” ²¹^(AC)Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump ^(AD)one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? ²²What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience ^(AE)vessels of wrath ^(AF)prepared for destruction, ²³in order to make known ^(AG)the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he ^(AH)has prepared beforehand for glory— ²⁴even us whom he ^(AI)has called, ^(AJ)not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? ²⁵As indeed he says in Hosea,

^(AK)“Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’
and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’”
²⁶^(AL)“And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called ^(AM)‘sons of the living God.’”

²⁷And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: ^(AN)“Though the number of the sons of Israel^[c] be as the sand of the sea, ^(AO)only a remnant of them will be saved, ²⁸for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.” ²⁹And as Isaiah predicted,

^(AP)^(AQ)“If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring,
^(AR)we would have been like Sodom
and become like Gomorrah.”
