Psalm 33

¹Sing joyfully^(A) to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting^(B) for the upright^(C) to praise him.
²Praise the Lord with the harp;^(D)
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.^(E)
³Sing to him a new song;^(F)
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.^(G)

⁴For the word of the Lord is right^(H) and true;^(I)
he is faithful^(J) in all he does.
⁵The Lord loves righteousness and justice;^(K)
the earth is full of his unfailing love.^(L)

⁶By the word^(M) of the Lord the heavens were made,^(N)
    their starry host^(O) by the breath of his mouth.
⁷He gathers the waters^(P) of the sea into jars^[a];^(Q)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
⁸Let all the earth fear the Lord;^(R)
    let all the people of the world^(S) revere him.^(T)
⁹For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,^(U) and it stood firm.

¹⁰The Lord foils^(V) the plans^(W) of the nations;^(X)
he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
¹¹But the plans of the Lord stand firm^(Y) forever,
the purposes^(Z) of his heart through all generations.

¹²Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,^(AA)
    the people he chose^(AB) for his inheritance.^(AC)
¹³From heaven the Lord looks down^(AD)
    and sees all mankind;^(AE)
¹⁴from his dwelling place^(AF) he watches
    all who live on earth—
¹⁵he who forms^(AG) the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.^(AH)

¹⁶No king is saved by the size of his army;^(AI)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
¹⁷A horse^(AJ) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
¹⁸But the eyes^(AK) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,^(AL)
¹⁹to deliver them from death^(AM)
    and keep them alive in famine.^(AN)

²⁰We wait^(AO) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
²¹In him our hearts rejoice,^(AP)
    for we trust in his holy name.^(AQ)
²²May your unfailing love^(AR) be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

60 “Arise,^(A) shine, for your light^(B) has come,
    and the glory^(C) of the Lord rises upon you.
²See, darkness^(D) covers the earth
    and thick darkness^(E) is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
    and his glory appears over you.
³Nations^(F) will come to your light,^(G)
    and kings^(H) to the brightness of your dawn.

⁴“Lift up your eyes and look about you:
    All assemble^(I) and come to you;
your sons come from afar,^(J)
    and your daughters^(K) are carried on the hip.^(L)
⁵Then you will look and be radiant,^(M)
    your heart will throb and swell with joy;^(N)
the wealth^(O) on the seas will be brought to you,
    to you the riches of the nations will come.
⁶Herds of camels^(P) will cover your land,
    young camels of Midian^(Q) and Ephah.^(R)
And all from Sheba^(S) will come,
    bearing gold and incense^(T)
    and proclaiming the praise^(U) of the Lord.
⁷All Kedar’s^(V) flocks will be gathered to you,
    the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
they will be accepted as offerings^(W) on my altar,^(X)
    and I will adorn my glorious temple.^(Y)

⁸“Who are these^(Z) that fly along like clouds,^(AA)
    like doves to their nests?
⁹Surely the islands^(AB) look to me;
    in the lead are the ships of Tarshish,^[a]^(AC)
bringing^(AD) your children from afar,
    with their silver and gold,^(AE)
to the honor^(AF) of the Lord your God,
    the Holy One^(AG) of Israel,
    for he has endowed you with splendor.^(AH)

¹⁰“Foreigners^(AI) will rebuild your walls,
    and their kings^(AJ) will serve you.
Though in anger I struck you,
    in favor^(AK) I will show you compassion.^(AL)
¹¹Your gates^(AM) will always stand open,
    they will never be shut, day or night,
so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations^(AN)—
    their kings^(AO) led in triumphal procession.
¹²For the nation or kingdom that will not serve^(AP) you will perish;
    it will be utterly ruined.^(AQ)

¹³“The glory of Lebanon^(AR) will come to you,
    the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,^(AS)
to adorn my sanctuary;^(AT)
    and I will glorify the place for my feet.^(AU)
¹⁴The children of your oppressors^(AV) will come bowing before you;
    all who despise you will bow down^(AW) at your feet
and will call you the City^(AX) of the Lord,
    Zion^(AY) of the Holy One^(AZ) of Israel.

¹⁵“Although you have been forsaken^(BA) and hated,
    with no one traveling^(BB) through,
I will make you the everlasting pride^(BC)
    and the joy^(BD) of all generations.
¹⁶You will drink the milk of nations
    and be nursed^(BE) at royal breasts.
Then you will know^(BF) that I, the Lord, am your Savior,^(BG)
    your Redeemer,^(BH) the Mighty One of Jacob.^(BI)
¹⁷Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,^(BJ)
    and silver in place of iron.
Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
    and iron in place of stones.
I will make peace^(BK) your governor
    and well-being your ruler.^(BL)

Dealing With False Teachers

¹⁴Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words;^(A) it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. ¹⁵Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.^(B) ¹⁶Avoid godless chatter,^(C) because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. ¹⁷Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus^(D) and Philetus, ¹⁸who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place,^(E) and they destroy the faith of some.^(F) ¹⁹Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm,^(G) sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”^(H) and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord^(I) must turn away from wickedness.”

²⁰In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.^(J) ²¹Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.^(K)

²²Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love^(L) and peace, along with those who call on the Lord^(M) out of a pure heart.^(N) ²³Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.^(O) ²⁴And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.^(P) ²⁵Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,^(Q) ²⁶and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil,^(R) who has taken them captive to do his will.

Mark 10:17-31

The Rich and the Kingdom of God^(A)

¹⁷As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees^(B) before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”^(C)

¹⁸“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. ¹⁹You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’^[a]”^(D)

²⁰“Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

²¹Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,^(E) and you will have treasure in heaven.^(F) Then come, follow me.”^(G)

²²At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

²³Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich^(H) to enter the kingdom of God!”

²⁴The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is^[b] to enter the kingdom of God!^(I) ²⁵It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”^(J)

²⁶The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

²⁷Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”^(K)

²⁸Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”^(L)

²⁹“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel ³⁰will fail to receive a hundred times as much^(M) in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come^(N) eternal life.^(O) ³¹But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”^(P)
