Psalm 33

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

33 ^(A)Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
    ^(B)Praise befits the upright.
²Give thanks to the Lord with the ^(C)lyre;
    make melody to him with ^(D)the harp of ^(E)ten strings!
³Sing to him ^(F)a new song;
    play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

⁴For the word of the Lord is upright,
and all his work is done in ^(G)faithfulness.
⁵He ^(H)loves righteousness and justice;
^(I)the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

⁶By ^(J)the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
and by ^(K)the breath of his mouth all ^(L)their host.
⁷He gathers the waters of the sea as ^(M)a heap;
he ^(N)puts the deeps in storehouses.

⁸Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
⁹For ^(O)he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.

¹⁰The Lord ^(P)brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
¹¹^(Q)The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
    the plans of his heart to all generations.
¹²^(R)Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has ^(S)chosen as his heritage!

¹³The Lord ^(T)looks down from heaven;
    he sees all the children of man;
¹⁴from ^(U)where he sits enthroned he ^(V)looks out
    on all the inhabitants of the earth,
¹⁵he who fashions the hearts of them all
    and observes all their deeds.
¹⁶^(W)The king is not saved by his great army;
    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
¹⁷^(X)The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
    and by its great might it cannot rescue.

¹⁸Behold, ^(Y)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
^(Z)on those who hope in his steadfast love,
¹⁹that he may ^(AA)deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in ^(AB)famine.

²⁰Our soul ^(AC)waits for the Lord;
    he is our ^(AD)help and ^(AE)our shield.
²¹For our heart is ^(AF)glad in him,
    because we ^(AG)trust in his holy name.
²²Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

²²“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: ^(A)It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, ^(B)which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. ²³^(C)And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. ^(D)And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. ²⁴^(E)I will take you ^(F)from the nations and gather you from all the countries and ^(G)bring you into your own land. ²⁵^(H)I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from ^(I)all your uncleannesses, and ^(J)from all your idols ^(K)I will cleanse you. ²⁶And I will give you ^(L)a new heart, and ^(M)a new spirit I will put within you. ^(N)And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. ²⁷^(O)And I will put my Spirit within you, ^(P)and cause you to walk in my statutes and ^(Q)be careful to obey my rules.^[a] ²⁸^(R)You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and ^(S)you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

Test the Spirits

4 Beloved, ^(A)do not believe every spirit, but ^(B)test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for ^(C)many ^(D)false prophets ^(E)have gone out into the world. ²By this you know the Spirit of God: ^(F)every spirit that confesses that ^(G)Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, ³and every spirit ^(H)that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and ^(I)now is in the world already. ⁴Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for ^(J)he who is in you is greater than ^(K)he who is in the world. ⁵^(L)They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and ^(M)the world listens to them. ⁶We are from God. ^(N)Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know ^(O)the Spirit of truth and ^(P)the spirit of error.

God Is Love

⁷Beloved, ^(Q)let us love one another, for love is from God, and ^(R)whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. ⁸^(S)Anyone who does not love does not know God, because ^(T)God is love. ⁹In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that ^(U)God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. ¹⁰In this is love, ^(V)not that we have loved God ^(W)but that he loved us and sent his Son to be ^(X)the propitiation for our sins. ¹¹Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. ¹²^(Y)No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and ^(Z)his love is perfected in us.

¹³^(AA)By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. ¹⁴And ^(AB)we have seen and testify that ^(AC)the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of ^(AD)the world.
