The Steadfast Love of the Lord

33 (A)Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
    (B)Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (C)lyre;
    make melody to him with (D)the harp of (E)ten strings!
Sing to him (F)a new song;
    play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

For the word of the Lord is upright,
    and all his work is done in (G)faithfulness.
He (H)loves righteousness and justice;
    (I)the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

By (J)the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
    and by (K)the breath of his mouth all (L)their host.
He gathers the waters of the sea as (M)a heap;
    he (N)puts the deeps in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For (O)he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord (P)brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 (Q)The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
    the plans of his heart to all generations.
12 (R)Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has (S)chosen as his heritage!

13 The Lord (T)looks down from heaven;
    he sees all the children of man;
14 from (U)where he sits enthroned he (V)looks out
    on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
    and observes all their deeds.
16 (W)The king is not saved by his great army;
    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 (X)The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
    and by its great might it cannot rescue.

18 Behold, (Y)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
    (Z)on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may (AA)deliver their soul from death
    and keep them alive in (AB)famine.

20 Our soul (AC)waits for the Lord;
    he is our (AD)help and (AE)our shield.
21 For our heart is (AF)glad in him,
    because we (AG)trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

The Lord's Covenant with David

(A)Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord (B)had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to (C)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell (D)in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells (E)in a tent.” And Nathan said to the king, (F)“Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”

But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: (G)Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house (H)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about (I)in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where (J)I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with (K)any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded (L)to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, (M)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince[b] over my people Israel. (N)And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel (O)and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place (P)and be disturbed no more. (Q)And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 (R)from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And (S)I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that (T)the Lord will make you a house. 12 (U)When your days are fulfilled and (V)you lie down with your fathers, (W)I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (X)He shall build a house for my name, and (Y)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (Z)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, (AA)I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 (AB)but my steadfast love will not depart from him, (AC)as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 (AD)And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.[c] (AE)Your throne shall be established forever.’” 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

David's Prayer of Gratitude

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, (AF)“Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. (AG)You have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! 20 And what more can David say to you? (AH)For you know your servant, O Lord God! 21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. 22 (AI)Therefore you are great, O Lord God. (AJ)For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 (AK)And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name (AL)and doing for them[d] great and awesome things by driving out before your people,[e] whom (AM)you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? 24 (AN)And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O Lord, became their God. 25 And now, O Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27 For you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and (AO)your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 29 Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, (AP)and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

26 (A)Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes,[a] which is opposite Galilee. 27 When Jesus[b] had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house (B)but among the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he (C)cried out and fell down before him and said (D)with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, (E)Son of (F)the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon (G)into the desert.) 30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, (H)“Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into (I)the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into (J)the lake and drowned.

34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting (K)at the feet of Jesus, (L)clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed[c] man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes (M)asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and (N)declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd (O)welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 (P)And there came a man named Jairus, who was (Q)a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, 42 for he had (R)an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As Jesus went, the people (S)pressed around him. 43 And there was a woman (T)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her (U)living on physicians,[d] she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched (V)the fringe of his garment, and (W)immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter[e] said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that (X)power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, (Y)your faith has made you well; (Z)go in peace.”

49 While he was still speaking, someone from (AA)the ruler's house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; (AB)do not trouble (AC)the Teacher any more.” 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” 51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except (AD)Peter and (AE)John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and (AF)mourning for her, but he (AG)said, “Do not weep, for (AH)she is not dead but (AI)sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But (AJ)taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, (AK)arise.” 55 And (AL)her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but (AM)he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
