Blessed Are the Forgiven

A Maskil[a] of David.

32 (A)Blessed is the one whose (B)transgression is forgiven,
    whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord (C)counts no iniquity,
    and in whose spirit (D)there is no deceit.

For when I kept silent, my (E)bones wasted away
    through my (F)groaning all day long.
For day and night your (G)hand was heavy upon me;
    my strength was dried up[b] as by the heat of summer. Selah

I (H)acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I (I)will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
    and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

Therefore let everyone who is (J)godly
    offer prayer to you at a time when you (K)may be found;
surely in the rush of (L)great waters,
    they shall not reach him.
You are a (M)hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from (N)trouble;
    you surround me with (O)shouts of deliverance. Selah

I will (P)instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will (Q)counsel you with my eye upon you.
(R)Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
    which must be curbed with (S)bit and bridle,
    or it will not stay near you.

10 (T)Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
    but steadfast love surrounds the one who (U)trusts in the Lord.
11 (V)Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
    and (W)shout for joy, all you (X)upright in heart!

  1. Psalm 32:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term
  2. Psalm 32:4 Hebrew my vitality was changed

11 “Moab has been at ease from his youth
    and has (A)settled on his dregs;
he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
    nor has he gone into exile;
so his taste remains in him,
    and his scent is not changed.

12 “Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I shall send to him pourers who will pour him, and empty his vessels and break his[a] jars in pieces. 13 Then (B)Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as (C)the house of Israel was ashamed of (D)Bethel, their confidence.

14 “How do you say, ‘We are heroes
    and mighty men of war’?
15 The destroyer of (E)Moab and his cities has come up,
    and the choicest of his young men have (F)gone down to slaughter,
    declares (G)the King, (H)whose name is the Lord of hosts.
16 The calamity of Moab is near at hand,
    and his affliction hastens swiftly.
17 (I)Grieve for him, all you who are around him,
    and all who know his name;
say, (J)‘How the mighty scepter is broken,
    the glorious staff.’

18 (K)“Come down from your glory,
    and sit on the parched ground,
    O inhabitant of (L)Dibon!
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you;
    he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 (M)Stand by the way (N)and watch,
    O inhabitant of (O)Aroer!
Ask him who flees and her who escapes;
    say, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is put to shame, for it is broken;
    (P)wail and cry!
Tell it beside (Q)the Arnon,
    that (R)Moab is laid waste.

21 “Judgment has come upon (S)the tableland, upon Holon, and (T)Jahzah, and Mephaath, 22 and (U)Dibon, and (V)Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23 and (W)Kiriathaim, and Beth-gamul, and (X)Beth-meon, 24 and (Y)Kerioth, and (Z)Bozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 (AA)The horn of Moab is cut off, and (AB)his arm is broken, declares the Lord.

26 (AC)“Make him drunk, (AD)because he magnified himself against the Lord, so that Moab shall (AE)wallow in his vomit, (AF)and he too shall be held in derision. 27 (AG)Was not Israel a derision to you? (AH)Was he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him (AI)you wagged your head?

28 (AJ)“Leave the cities, and dwell in the rock,
    O inhabitants of Moab!
Be (AK)like the dove that nests
    in the sides of the mouth of a gorge.
29 (AL)We have heard of the pride of Moab—
    he is very proud—
of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance,
    and the haughtiness of his heart.
30 I know his insolence, declares the Lord;
    (AM)his boasts are false,
    his deeds are false.
31 (AN)Therefore I wail for Moab;
    I cry out for all Moab;
    for the men of (AO)Kir-hareseth I mourn.
32 More than for (AP)Jazer I weep for you,
    (AQ)O vine of (AR)Sibmah!
(AS)Your branches passed over the sea,
    reached to the Sea of (AT)Jazer;
on your summer fruits and your grapes
    the destroyer has fallen.
33 (AU)Gladness and joy have been taken away
    from the fruitful land of Moab;
I have made the wine cease from the winepresses;
    no one treads them with shouts of joy;
    the shouting is not the shout of joy.

34 (AV)“From the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, as far as Jahaz they utter their voice, from Zoar to (AW)Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. For the waters of Nimrim also have become desolate. 35 And I will bring to an end in Moab, declares the Lord, him who offers sacrifice in (AX)the high place and makes offerings to his god. 36 Therefore my heart moans for Moab like a flute, and my heart moans like a flute for the men of (AY)Kir-hareseth. (AZ)Therefore the riches they gained have perished.

37 (BA)“For every head is shaved and every beard cut off. (BB)On all the hands are gashes, and (BC)around the waist is sackcloth. 38 On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation, for I have broken Moab like (BD)a vessel for which no one cares, declares the Lord. 39 How it is broken! How they wail! (BE)How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab (BF)has become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”

40 For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, (BG)one shall fly swiftly like an eagle
    (BH)and spread his wings against Moab;
41 (BI)the cities shall be taken
    and the strongholds seized.
(BJ)The heart of the warriors of Moab shall be in that day
    like the heart of (BK)a woman in her birth pains;
42 Moab shall be (BL)destroyed and be no longer a people,
    because (BM)he magnified himself against the Lord.
43 (BN)Terror, pit, and snare
    are before you, O inhabitant of Moab!
declares the Lord.
44 He who flees from the terror
    shall fall into the pit,
and he who climbs out of the pit
    shall be caught in the snare.
(BO)For I will bring these things upon Moab,
    the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
    fugitives stop without strength,
for fire came out from Heshbon,
    flame from the house of Sihon;
it has destroyed (BP)the forehead of Moab,
    the crown of (BQ)the sons of tumult.
46 (BR)Woe to you, O Moab!
    The people of (BS)Chemosh are undone,
for your sons have been taken captive,
    and your daughters into captivity.
47 (BT)Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
    in the latter days, declares the Lord.”
Thus far is the judgment on Moab.

Future Glory

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (A)are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for (B)the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation (C)was subjected to futility, not willingly, but (D)because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that (E)the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that (F)the whole creation (G)has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have (H)the firstfruits of the Spirit, (I)groan inwardly as (J)we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, (K)the redemption of our bodies. 24 For (L)in this hope we were saved. Now (M)hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we (N)wait for it with patience.

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For (O)we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but (P)the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And (Q)he who searches hearts knows what is (R)the mind of the Spirit, because[a] the Spirit (S)intercedes for the saints (T)according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together (U)for good,[b] for (V)those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he (W)foreknew he also (X)predestined (Y)to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be (Z)the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also (AA)justified, and those whom he justified he also (AB)glorified.

God's Everlasting Love

31 What then shall we say to these things? (AC)If God is for us, who can be[c] against us? 32 (AD)He who did not spare his own Son but (AE)gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? (AF)It is God who justifies. 34 (AG)Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—(AH)who is at the right hand of God, (AI)who indeed is interceding for us.[d] 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

(AJ)“For your sake (AK)we are being killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than (AL)conquerors through (AM)him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
