Psalm 3-5
New American Standard Bible 1995
Morning Prayer of Trust in God.
A Psalm of David, when [a]he fled from Absalom his son.
3 O Lord, how (A)my adversaries have increased!
Many are rising up against me.
2 Many are saying [b]of my soul,
“There is no [c](B)deliverance for him in God.” [d]Selah.
3 But You, O Lord, are (C)a shield about me,
My (D)glory, and the One who (E)lifts my head.
4 I was crying to the Lord with my voice,
And He (F)answered me from (G)His holy [e]mountain. Selah.
5 [f]I (H)lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.
6 I will (I)not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have (J)set themselves against me round about.
7 (K)Arise, O Lord; (L)save me, O my God!
For You [g]have (M)smitten all my enemies on the [h]cheek;
You [i]have (N)shattered the teeth of the wicked.
8 [j](O)Salvation belongs to the Lord;
Your (P)blessing [k]be upon Your people! Selah.
Evening Prayer of Trust in God.
[l]For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.
4 (Q)Answer me when (R)I call, O God [m]of my righteousness!
You have [n](S)relieved me in my distress;
Be (T)gracious to me and (U)hear my prayer.
2 O sons of men, how long will (V)my [o]honor become (W)a reproach?
How long will you love (X)what is worthless and aim at (Y)deception? [p]Selah.
3 But know that the Lord has [q](Z)set apart the (AA)godly man for Himself;
The Lord (AB)hears when I call to Him.
4 [r](AC)Tremble, [s](AD)and do not sin;
[t](AE)Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
5 Offer [u]the (AF)sacrifices of righteousness,
And (AG)trust in the Lord.
6 Many are saying, “(AH)Who will show us any good?”
(AI)Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord!
7 You have put (AJ)gladness in my heart,
More than when their grain and new wine abound.
8 In peace I will [v]both (AK)lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O Lord, make me to (AL)dwell in safety.
Prayer for Protection from the Wicked.
For the choir director; for [w]flute accompaniment. A Psalm of David.
5 (AM)Give ear to my words, O Lord,
Consider my [x](AN)groaning.
2 Heed (AO)the sound of my cry for help, (AP)my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
3 In the morning, O Lord, [y]You will hear my voice;
In the (AQ)morning I will order my [z]prayer to You and eagerly (AR)watch.
4 For You are not a God (AS)who takes pleasure in wickedness;
(AT)No evil [aa]dwells with You.
5 The (AU)boastful shall not (AV)stand before Your eyes;
You (AW)hate all who do iniquity.
6 You (AX)destroy those who speak falsehood;
The Lord abhors (AY)the man of bloodshed and deceit.
7 But as for me, (AZ)by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house,
[ab]At Your holy temple I will (BA)bow in (BB)reverence for You.
8 O Lord, (BC)lead me (BD)in Your righteousness (BE)because of [ac]my foes;
Make Your way [ad]straight before me.
9 There is (BF)nothing [ae]reliable in [af]what they say;
Their (BG)inward part is destruction itself.
Their (BH)throat is an open grave;
They [ag]flatter with their tongue.
10 Hold them guilty, O God;
(BI)By their own devices let them fall!
In the multitude of their transgressions (BJ)thrust them out,
For they are (BK)rebellious against You.
11 But let all who (BL)take refuge in You (BM)be glad,
Let them ever sing for joy;
And [ah]may You (BN)shelter them,
That those who (BO)love Your name may exult in You.
12 For it is You who (BP)blesses the righteous man, O Lord,
You (BQ)surround him with favor as with a shield.
