Psalm 27[a]

Trust in God

(A)Of David.

A

I

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
    whom should I fear?
The Lord is my life’s refuge;
    of whom should I be afraid?
When evildoers come at me
    to devour my flesh,[b](B)
These my enemies and foes
    themselves stumble and fall.
Though an army encamp against me,
    my heart does not fear;
Though war be waged against me,
    even then do I trust.

II

One thing I ask of the Lord;
    this I seek:
To dwell in the Lord’s house
    all the days of my life,
To gaze on the Lord’s beauty,
    to visit his temple.(C)
For God will hide me in his shelter
    in time of trouble,(D)
He will conceal me in the cover of his tent;
    and set me high upon a rock.
Even now my head is held high
    above my enemies on every side!
I will offer in his tent
    sacrifices with shouts of joy;
    I will sing and chant praise to the Lord.

B

I

Hear my voice, Lord, when I call;
    have mercy on me and answer me.
“Come,” says my heart, “seek his face”;[c]
    your face, Lord, do I seek!(E)
Do not hide your face from me;
    do not repel your servant in anger.
You are my salvation; do not cast me off;
    do not forsake me, God my savior!
10 Even if my father and mother forsake me,
    the Lord will take me in.(F)

II

11 Lord, show me your way;
    lead me on a level path
    because of my enemies.(G)
12 Do not abandon me to the desire of my foes;
    malicious and lying witnesses have risen against me.
13 I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness
    in the land of the living.[d](H)
14 Wait for the Lord, take courage;
    be stouthearted, wait for the Lord!

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 27 Tradition has handed down the two sections of the Psalm (Ps 27:1–6; 7–14) as one Psalm, though each part could be understood as complete in itself. Asserting boundless hope that God will bring rescue (Ps 27:1–3), the psalmist longs for the presence of God in the Temple, protection from all enemies (Ps 27:4–6). In part B there is a clear shift in tone (Ps 27:7–12); the climax of the poem comes with “I believe” (Ps 27:13), echoing “I trust” (Ps 27:3).
  2. 27:2 To devour my flesh: the psalmist’s enemies are rapacious beasts (Ps 7:3; 17:12; 22:14, 17).
  3. 27:8 Seek his face: to commune with God in the Temple. The idiom is derived from the practice of journeying to sacred places, cf. Hos 5:15; 2 Sm 21:1; Ps 24:6.
  4. 27:13 In the land of the living: or “in the land of life,” an epithet of the Jerusalem Temple (Ps 52:7; 116:9; Is 38:11), where the faithful had access to the life-giving presence of God.

Confianza absoluta en Dios

Salmo de David.

27 El Señor es mi luz(A) y mi salvación(B);
¿a quién temeré?
El Señor es la fortaleza[a] de mi vida(C);
¿de quién tendré temor(D)?
Cuando los malhechores vinieron sobre mí para devorar mis carnes(E),
ellos, mis adversarios y mis enemigos, tropezaron y cayeron(F).
Aunque un ejército acampe contra mí(G),
no temerá mi corazón;

Porque en el día de la angustia(L) me esconderá en su tabernáculo[e](M);
en lo secreto de su tienda me ocultará(N);
sobre una roca me pondrá en alto(O).
Entonces[f] será levantada mi cabeza(P) sobre mis enemigos que me cercan;
y en su tienda ofreceré sacrificios con[g] voces de júbilo(Q);
cantaré, sí, cantaré alabanzas al Señor(R).

Escucha, oh Señor, mi voz cuando clamo(S);
ten piedad de mí, y respóndeme(T).
Cuando dijiste: Buscad mi rostro(U), mi corazón te respondió:
Tu rostro, Señor, buscaré(V).
No escondas tu rostro de mí(W);
no rechaces con ira a tu siervo(X);
tú has sido mi ayuda(Y).
No me abandones(Z) ni me desampares(AA),
oh Dios de mi salvación.
10 Porque aunque mi padre y mi madre me hayan abandonado[h](AB),
el Señor me recogerá(AC).

11 Señor, enséñame tu camino(AD),
y guíame por senda llana
por causa de mis enemigos[i](AE).
12 No me entregues a la voluntad[j] de mis adversarios(AF);
porque testigos falsos se han levantado contra mí(AG),
y los que respiran violencia(AH).
13 Hubiera yo desmayado, si no hubiera creído que había de ver la bondad del Señor(AI)
en la tierra de los vivientes(AJ).
14 Espera al Señor(AK);
esfuérzate y aliéntese tu corazón(AL).
Sí, espera al Señor.

An Exuberant Declaration of Faith

A Psalm of David.

27 The Lord is my (A)light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The (B)Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked came against me
To (C)eat[a] up my flesh,
My enemies and foes,
They stumbled and fell.
(D)Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident.

(E)One thing I have desired of the Lord,
That will I seek:
That I may (F)dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
To behold the [b]beauty of the Lord,
And to inquire in His temple.
For (G)in the time of trouble
He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall (H)set me high upon a rock.

And now (I)my head shall be [c]lifted up above my enemies all around me;
Therefore I will offer sacrifices of [d]joy in His tabernacle;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice!
Have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
When You said, “Seek My face,”
My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.”
(J)Do not hide Your face from me;
Do not turn Your servant away in anger;
You have been my help;
Do not leave me nor forsake me,
O God of my salvation.
10 (K)When my father and my mother forsake me,
Then the Lord will take care of me.

11 (L)Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.
12 Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries;
For (M)false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as breathe out violence.
13 I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
(N)In the land of the living.

14 (O)Wait[e] on the Lord;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!
