Psalm 25^[a]

Of David.

25 I offer my life^[b] to you, Lord.
²    My God, I trust you.
Please don’t let me be put to shame!
    Don’t let my enemies rejoice over me!
³For that matter,
    don’t let anyone who hopes in you
        be put to shame;
    instead, let those who are treacherous without excuse be put to shame.

⁴Make your ways known to me, Lord;
    teach me your paths.
⁵Lead me in your truth—teach it to me—
    because you are the God who saves me.
        I put my hope in you all day long.
⁶Lord, remember your compassion and faithful love—
    they are forever!
⁷But don’t remember the sins of my youth or my wrongdoing.
    Remember me only according to your faithful love
        for the sake of your goodness, Lord.

⁸The Lord is good and does the right thing;
    he teaches sinners which way they should go.
⁹God guides the weak to justice,
    teaching them his way.
¹⁰All the Lord’s paths are loving and faithful
    for those who keep his covenant and laws.

Psalm 32

A maskil^[a] of David.

32 The one whose wrongdoing is forgiven,
    whose sin is covered over, is truly happy!
²The one the Lord doesn’t consider guilty—
    in whose spirit there is no dishonesty—
    that one is truly happy!

³When I kept quiet, my bones wore out;
    I was groaning all day long—
    every day, every night!—
⁴because your hand was heavy upon me.
    My energy was sapped as if in a summer drought. Selah
⁵So I admitted my sin to you;
    I didn’t conceal my guilt.
    “I’ll confess my sins to the Lord, ” is what I said.
    Then you removed the guilt of my sin. Selah

⁶That’s why all the faithful should pray to you during troubled times,^[b]
    so that a great flood of water won’t reach them.
⁷You are my secret hideout!
    You protect me from trouble.
    You surround me with songs of rescue! Selah

⁸I will instruct you and teach you
    about the direction you should go.
    I’ll advise you and keep my eye on you.
⁹Don’t be like some senseless horse or mule,
    whose movement must be controlled
    with a bit and a bridle.^[c]
        Don’t be anything like that!^[d]
¹⁰The pain of the wicked is severe,
    but faithful love surrounds the one who trusts the Lord.
¹¹You who are righteous, rejoice in the Lord and be glad!
    All you whose hearts are right, sing out in joy!

Matthew 9:2-13

²People brought to him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a cot. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man who was paralyzed, “Be encouraged, my child, your sins are forgiven.”

³Some legal experts said among themselves, “This man is insulting God.”

⁴But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, “Why do you fill your minds with evil things? ⁵Which is easier—to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? ⁶But so you will know that the Human One^[a] has authority on the earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“Get up, take your cot, and go home.” ⁷The man got up and went home. ⁸When the crowds saw what had happened, they were afraid and praised God, who had given such authority to human beings.

Calling of Matthew

⁹As Jesus continued on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at a kiosk for collecting taxes. He said to him, “Follow me,” and he got up and followed him. ¹⁰As Jesus sat down to eat in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners joined Jesus and his disciples at the table.

¹¹But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

¹²When Jesus heard it, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. ¹³Go and learn what this means: I want mercy and not sacrifice.^[b] I didn’t come to call righteous people, but sinners.”
