Psalm 24[a]

The Glory of God in Procession to Zion

A psalm of David.

I

The earth is the Lord’s and all it holds,(A)
the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it on the seas,
    established it over the rivers.(B)

II

Who may go up the mountain of the Lord?(C)
Who can stand in his holy place?
[b]“The clean of hand and pure of heart,
who has not given his soul to useless things,
    what is vain.
He will receive blessings from the Lord,
and justice from his saving God.
Such is the generation that seeks him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.”
Selah

III

Lift up your heads, O gates;[c]
    be lifted, you ancient portals,
that the king of glory may enter.(D)
Who is this king of glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty,
    the Lord, mighty in war.
Lift up your heads, O gates;
    rise up, you ancient portals,
that the king of glory may enter.
10 Who is this king of glory?
The Lord of hosts, he is the king of glory.
Selah

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 24 The Psalm apparently accompanied a ceremony of the entry of God (invisibly enthroned upon the ark), followed by the people, into the Temple. The Temple commemorated the creation of the world (Ps 24:1–2). The people had to affirm their fidelity before being admitted into the sanctuary (Ps 24:3–6; cf. Ps 15). A choir identifies the approaching God and invites the very Temple gates to bow down in obeisance (Ps 24:7–10).
  2. 24:4–5 Lit., “the one whose hands are clean.” The singular is used for the entire class of worshipers.
  3. 24:7, 9 Lift up your heads, O gates…you ancient portals: the literal meaning would involve disassembly of the gates, since the portcullis (a gate that moves up and down) was unknown in the ancient world. Extra-biblical parallels might also suggest a full personification of the circle of gate towers: they are like a council of elders, bowed down and anxious, awaiting the return of the army and the great warrior gone to battle.

Kanu waa sabuur Daa'uud tiriyey.

24 Rabbigaa iska leh dhulka iyo waxa ka buuxa oo dhan,
Iyo dunida iyo kuwa degganba.
Waayo, isagaa badaha dushooda ka aasaasay,
Oo wuxuu ka dul dhisay webiyaasha.
Bal yaa fuuli doona Rabbiga buurtiisa?
Oo bal yaa dhex istaagi doona meeshiisa quduuska ah?
Waa kii gacmihiisu nadiifsan yihiin, oo qalbigiisu daahir yahay,
Oo aan naftiisa hawo been ah kor ugu qaadin,
Oo aan si khiyaano leh u dhaaran.
Kaasu wuxuu Rabbiga ka heli doonaa barako,
Ilaaha badbaadadiisana xaqnimo.
Kanu waxaa weeye qarnigii kuwa isaga doondoona,
Oo waa kuwa wejigaaga doondoona, Ilaaha Yacquubow. (Selaah)
Irdahow, madaxiinna kor u qaada,
Oo albaabbada daa'imiska ahow, kor ha laydiin qaado,
Oo waxaa soo geli doona Boqorka ammaanta.
Bal waa ayo Boqorka ammaantu?
Waa Rabbiga xoog iyo itaal badan,
Waa Rabbiga dagaalka ku xoog badan.
Irdahow, madaxiinna kor u qaada,
Oo albaabbada daa'imiska ahow, madaxiinna kor u qaada,
Oo waxaa soo geli doona Boqorka ammaanta.
10 Bal waa ayo Boqorkan ammaantu?
Waa Rabbiga ciidammada,
Isaga weeye Boqorka ammaantu. (Selaah)

Psalm 24

A psalm of David.

24 The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it,
the world and its inhabitants too.
Because God is the one who established it on the seas;
God set it firmly on the waters.

Who can ascend the Lord’s mountain?
Who can stand in his holy sanctuary?
Only the one with clean hands and a pure heart;
the one who hasn’t made false promises,
the one who hasn’t sworn dishonestly.
That kind of person receives blessings from the Lord
and righteousness from the God who saves.
And that’s how things are
with the generation that seeks him—
that seeks the face of Jacob’s God.[a] Selah

Mighty gates: lift up your heads!
    Ancient doors: rise up high!
So the glorious king can enter!
Who is this glorious king?
    The Lord—strong and powerful!
    The Lord—powerful in battle!
Mighty gates: lift up your heads!
    Ancient doors: rise up high!
So the glorious king can enter!
10 Who is this glorious king?
    The Lord of heavenly forces—
he is the glorious king! Selah
