⁴ Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,^[a](A)
I will fear no evil,^(B)
    for you are with me;^(C)
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

43 But now, this is what the Lord says—
    he who created^(A) you, Jacob,
    he who formed^(B) you, Israel:^(C)
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed^(D) you;
    I have summoned you by name;^(E) you are mine.^(F)
2 When you pass through the waters,^(G)
    I will be with you;^(H)
and when you pass through the rivers,
    they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,^(I)
    you will not be burned;
    the flames will not set you ablaze.^(J)

¹ God is our refuge^(A) and strength,^(B)
    an ever-present^(C) help^(D) in trouble.^(E)
2 Therefore we will not fear,^(F) though the earth give way^(G)
    and the mountains fall^(H) into the heart of the sea,^(I)
3 though its waters roar^(J) and foam^(K)
    and the mountains quake^(L) with their surging.^[c]

¹⁴ Shepherd^(A) your people with your staff,^(B)
    the flock of your inheritance,
which lives by itself in a forest,
    in fertile pasturelands.^[a](C)
Let them feed in Bashan^(D) and Gilead^(E)
    as in days long ago.^(F)
