³⁹ Those who passed by derided^[a] him, shaking their heads^{(A) 40} and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”^(B)

¹¹ Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then he put an elegant robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.^(A)

²⁰ After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

²⁹ and after twisting some thorns into a crown they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”^(A)

⁶⁶ What do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death.”^{(A) 67} Then they spat in his face and struck him, and some slapped him,^{(B) 68} saying, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah!^[a] Who is it that struck you?”

³⁵ And the people stood by watching, but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah^[a] of God, his chosen one!”^{(A) 36} The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine^{(B) 37} and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” ³⁸ There was also an inscription over him,^[b] “This is the King of the Jews.”

³⁹ One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding^[c] him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah?^[d] Save yourself and us!”^(C)
