A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise.

For the choir director; upon [a]Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David.

22 (A)My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
[b](B)Far from my deliverance are the words of my [c](C)groaning.
O my God, I (D)cry by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but [d]I have no rest.
Yet (E)You are holy,
O You who [e]are enthroned upon (F)the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers (G)trusted;
They trusted and You (H)delivered them.
To You they cried out and were delivered;
(I)In You they trusted and were not [f]disappointed.

But I am a (J)worm and not a man,
A (K)reproach of men and (L)despised by the people.
All who see me [g](M)sneer at me;
They [h]separate with the lip, they (N)wag the head, saying,
[i]Commit yourself to the Lord; (O)let Him deliver him;
Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”

Yet You are He who (P)brought me forth from the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
10 Upon You I was cast (Q)from [j]birth;
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.

11 (R)Be not far from me, for [k]trouble is near;
For there is (S)none to help.
12 Many (T)bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of (U)Bashan have encircled me.
13 They (V)open wide their mouth at me,
As a ravening and a roaring (W)lion.
14 I am (X)poured out like water,
And all my (Y)bones are out of joint;
My (Z)heart is like wax;
It is melted within [l]me.
15 My (AA)strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And (AB)my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You (AC)lay me [m]in the dust of death.
16 For (AD)dogs have surrounded me;
[n]A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
[o]They (AE)pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
(AF)They look, they stare at me;
18 They (AG)divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.

The Crucifixion

33 (A)And when they came to a place called (B)Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 (C)they gave Him (D)wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.

35 And when they had crucified Him, (E)they divided up His garments among themselves by casting [a]lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to (F)keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him [b]which read, “(G)THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

38 At that time two robbers *were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were [c]hurling abuse at Him, (H)wagging their heads 40 and saying, “(I)You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! (J)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 (K)He saved others; [d]He cannot save Himself. (L)He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 (M)He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He [e]delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (N)The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.

45 (O)Now from the [f]sixth hour darkness [g]fell upon all the land until the [h]ninth hour. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, (P)Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 (Q)Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them said, “[i]Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him[j].” 50 And Jesus (R)cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 (S)And behold, (T)the [k]veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and (U)the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the [l]saints who had (V)fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered (W)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (X)Now the centurion, and those who were with him (Y)keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw (Z)the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was [m](AA)the Son of God!”

The Crucifixion

33 (A)When they came to the place called [a]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [b]But Jesus was saying, (B)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (C)And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. 35 And the people stood by, looking on. And even the (D)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; (E)let Him save Himself if this is the [c]Christ of God, His Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, (F)offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “(G)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, “(H)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

39 (I)One of the criminals who were hanged there was [d]hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the [e]Christ? (J)Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [f]what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come [g]in Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in (K)Paradise.”

44 (L)It was now about [h](M)the sixth hour, and darkness [i]fell over the whole land until [j]the ninth hour, 45 [k]because the sun was obscured; and (N)the veil of the temple was torn [l]in two. 46 And Jesus, (O)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (P)into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. 47 (Q)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (R)praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was [m]innocent.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, [n](S)beating their breasts. 49 (T)And all His acquaintances and (U)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.
