A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise.

For the music director; upon [a]Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David.

22 (A)My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
(B)Far from my [b]help are the words of my [c](C)groaning.
My God, I (D)cry out by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but [d]I have no rest.
Yet (E)You are holy,
You who [e]are enthroned upon (F)the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers (G)trusted;
They trusted and You (H)rescued them.
To You they cried out and they fled to safety;
(I)In You they trusted and were not [f]disappointed.

But I am a (J)worm and not a person,
A (K)disgrace of mankind and (L)despised by the people.
All who see me (M)deride me;
They [g]sneer, they (N)shake their heads, saying,
[h]Turn [i]him over to the Lord; (O)let Him save him;
Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”

Yet You are He who (P)brought me forth from the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
10 I was cast upon You (Q)from [j]birth;
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.

11 (R)Do not be far from me, for [k]trouble is near;
For there is (S)no one to help.
12 Many (T)bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of (U)Bashan have encircled me.
13 They (V)open their mouths wide at me,
As a ravening and roaring (W)lion.
14 I am (X)poured out like water,
And all my (Y)bones are out of joint;
My (Z)heart is like wax;
It is melted within [l]me.
15 My (AA)strength is dried up like a piece of pottery,
And (AB)my tongue clings to my jaws;
And You (AC)lay me [m]in the dust of death.
16 For (AD)dogs have surrounded me;
[n]A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
[o]They (AE)pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
(AF)They look, they stare at me;
18 They (AG)divide my garments among them,
And they cast lots for my clothing.

The Crucifixion

33 (A)And when they came to a place called (B)Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 (C)they gave Him (D)wine mixed with [a]bile to drink; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink it.

35 And when they had crucified Him, (E)they divided His garments among themselves by casting [b]lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to (F)keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him [c]which read, “(G)THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

38 At that time two [d]rebels *were being crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were [e]speaking abusively to Him, (H)shaking their heads, 40 and saying, “(I)You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! (J)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 (K)He saved others; [f]He cannot save Himself! (L)He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 (M)He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He [g]takes pleasure in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (N)And the [h]rebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same way.

45 (O)Now from the [i]sixth hour darkness [j]fell upon all the land until the [k]ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, (P)Eli, Eli, lema sabaktanei?” that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 And (Q)immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them said, “[l]Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him[m].” 50 And Jesus (R)cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. 51 (S)And behold, (T)the [n]veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and (U)the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 Also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the [o]saints who had (V)fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered (W)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (X)Now as for the centurion and those who were with him (Y)keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw (Z)the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was [p](AA)the Son of God!”

The Crucifixion

33 (A)And when they came to the place called [a]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [[b]But Jesus was saying, (B)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”] (C)And they cast lots, dividing His garments among themselves. 35 And the people stood by, watching. And even the (D)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; (E)let Him save Himself if this is the [c]Christ of God, His Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also ridiculed Him, coming up to Him, (F)offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “(G)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, “(H)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

39 (I)One of the criminals who were hanged there was [d]hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the [e]Christ? (J)Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [f]what we deserve for our crimes; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in (K)Paradise.”

44 (L)It was now about [g](M)the sixth hour, and darkness came over the entire land until [h]the ninth hour, 45 [i]because the sun stopped shining; and (N)the veil of the temple was torn [j]in two. 46 And Jesus, (O)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (P)into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” And having said this, He [k]died. 47 (Q)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (R)praising God, saying, “This man was in fact [l]innocent.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, after watching what had happened, began to return home, [m](S)beating their chests. 49 (T)And all His acquaintances and (U)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.
