The Reign of the Lord's Anointed

2 ^(A)Why do ^(B)the nations rage^[a]
    and the peoples plot in vain?
²The kings of the earth set themselves,
    and the rulers take counsel together,
    against the Lord and against his ^(C)Anointed, saying,
³“Let us ^(D)burst their bonds apart
    and cast away their cords from us.”

⁴He who ^(E)sits in the heavens ^(F)laughs;
    the Lord holds them in derision.
⁵Then he will speak to them in his ^(G)wrath,
    and terrify them in his fury, saying,
⁶“As for me, I have ^(H)set my King
    on ^(I)Zion, my ^(J)holy hill.”

⁷I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, ^(K)“You are my Son;
    today I have begotten you.
⁸Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
    and ^(L)the ends of the earth your possession.
⁹You shall ^(M)break^[b] them with ^(N)a rod of iron
    and dash them in pieces like ^(O)a potter's vessel.”

¹⁰Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
    be warned, O rulers of the earth.
¹¹^(P)Serve the Lord with ^(Q)fear,
    and ^(R)rejoice with ^(S)trembling.
¹²^(T)Kiss ^(U)the Son,
    lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
    for his ^(V)wrath is quickly kindled.
^(W)Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

²⁰Ahab said to Elijah, ^(A)“Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because ^(B)you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. ²¹Behold, I will bring disaster upon you. I will utterly burn you up, and ^(C)will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. ²²And I will make your house like ^(D)the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like ^(E)the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you ^(F)have made Israel to sin. ²³And of Jezebel the Lord also said, ^(G)‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel within ^(H)the walls of Jezreel.’ ²⁴^(I)Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat.”

Ahab's Repentance

²⁵(^(J)There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. ²⁶He acted very abominably in going after ^(K)idols, as ^(L)the Amorites had done, whom the Lord cast out before the people of Israel.)

²⁷And when Ahab heard those words, he ^(M)tore his clothes and ^(N)put sackcloth on his flesh and ^(O)fasted and lay in sackcloth and went about dejectedly. ²⁸And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ²⁹“Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; ^(P)but in his son's days I will bring the disaster upon his house.”

⁹^(A)And as they were coming down the mountain, ^(B)he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, ^(C)until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. ¹⁰^(D)So they kept the matter to themselves, ^(E)questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. ¹¹And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say ^(F)that first Elijah must come?” ¹²And he said to them, “Elijah does come first ^(G)to restore all things. And ^(H)how is it written of the Son of Man that he should ^(I)suffer many things and ^(J)be treated with contempt? ¹³But I tell you that Elijah has come, and ^(K)they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
