Psalm 19:7-14

⁷^(A)The law of the Lord is perfect,^[a]
    ^(B)reviving the soul;
^(C)the testimony of the Lord is ^(D)sure,
    ^(E)making wise ^(F)the simple;
⁸^(G)the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is ^(H)pure,
    ^(I)enlightening the eyes;
⁹the fear of the Lord is clean,
    enduring forever;
the rules^[b] of the Lord are ^(J)true,
    and righteous altogether.
¹⁰More to be desired are they than ^(K)gold,
    even much ^(L)fine gold;
^(M)sweeter also than honey
    and drippings of ^(N)the honeycomb.
¹¹Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
    ^(O)in keeping them there is great reward.

¹²^(P)Who can discern his errors?
    ^(Q)Declare me innocent from ^(R)hidden faults.
¹³^(S)Keep back your servant also from ^(T)presumptuous sins;
    let them not have ^(U)dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.

¹⁴Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my ^(V)rock and my ^(W)redeemer.

¹²So ^(A)the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

¹³Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. ¹⁴For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, ^(B)sold under sin. ¹⁵For I do not understand my own actions. For ^(C)I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. ¹⁶Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with ^(D)the law, that it is good. ¹⁷So now ^(E)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. ¹⁸For I know that nothing good dwells ^(F)in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. ¹⁹^(G)For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. ²⁰Now if I do what I do not want, ^(H)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

²¹So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. ²²For ^(I)I delight in the law of God, ^(J)in my inner being, ²³but I see in my members ^(K)another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. ²⁴Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from ^(L)this body of death? ²⁵Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Life in the Spirit

8 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.^[a] ²For the law of ^(M)the Spirit of life ^(N)has set you^[b] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

What Defiles a Person

¹⁴And he called the people to him again and said to them, ^(A)“Hear me, all of you, and understand: ¹⁵^(B)There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”^[a] ¹⁷And when he had entered ^(C)the house and left the people, ^(D)his disciples asked him about the parable. ¹⁸And he said to them, “Then ^(E)are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, ¹⁹since it enters not his heart ^(F)but his stomach, and is expelled?”^[b] (^(G)Thus he declared all foods clean.) ²⁰And he said, ^(H)“What comes out of a person is what defiles him. ²¹For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, ^(I)murder, adultery, ²²coveting, wickedness, deceit, ^(J)sensuality, ^(K)envy, ^(L)slander, ^(M)pride, ^(N)foolishness. ²³^(O)All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
