21 For I have (A)kept the ways of the Lord,
    and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For (B)all his rules[a] were before me,
    and his statutes I did not put away from me.
23 I was (C)blameless before him,
    and I kept myself from my guilt.
24 So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25 With (D)the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
26 with the purified you show yourself pure;
    and with (E)the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
27 For you save (F)a humble people,
    but (G)the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 For it is you who light my (H)lamp;
    the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
29 For by you I can run against a troop,
    and by my God I can (I)leap over (J)a wall.
30 This God—his way is (K)perfect;[b]
    the word of the Lord (L)proves true;
    he is (M)a shield for all those who (N)take refuge in him.

31 For (O)who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is (P)a rock, except our God?—
32 the God who (Q)equipped me with strength
    and made my way (R)blameless.
33 He made my feet like the feet of a (S)deer
    and set me secure on (T)the heights.
34 He (U)trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your right hand (V)supported me,
    and your (W)gentleness made me great.
36 You (X)gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them,
    and did not turn back till they were consumed.
38 I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise;
    they fell under my feet.
39 For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
    you made those who rise against me sink under me.
40 You made my enemies (Y)turn their backs to me,[c]
    and those who hated me I destroyed.
41 (Z)They cried for help, but there was none to save;
    they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
42 I beat them fine as (AA)dust before the wind;
    I cast them out like (AB)the mire of the streets.

43 You delivered me from (AC)strife with the people;
    you made me (AD)the head of the nations;
    (AE)people whom I had not known served me.
44 As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;
    (AF)foreigners (AG)came cringing to me.
45 (AH)Foreigners lost heart
    and (AI)came trembling out of their fortresses.

46 The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation—
47 the God who gave me vengeance
    and (AJ)subdued peoples under me,
48 who rescued me from my enemies;
    yes, you (AK)exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you delivered me from (AL)the man of violence.

49 (AM)For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and (AN)sing to your name.
50 Great (AO)salvation he brings to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to his (AP)anointed,
    to (AQ)David and his offspring forever.

Elihu Extols God's Greatness

36 And Elihu continued, and said:

“Bear with me a little, and I will show you,
    for I have yet something to say on God's behalf.
I will get my knowledge from (A)afar
    and ascribe (B)righteousness to my (C)Maker.
For truly my words are not false;
    one who is (D)perfect in knowledge is with you.

“Behold, God is mighty, and (E)does not despise any;
    he is (F)mighty in strength of understanding.
He does not keep the wicked alive,
    but gives (G)the afflicted their right.
He does not withdraw his (H)eyes from the righteous,
    but with (I)kings on the throne
    he sets them forever, and they are (J)exalted.
And if they are (K)bound in chains
    and caught in the cords of affliction,
then he declares to them their work
    and their transgressions, that they are (L)behaving arrogantly.
10 He (M)opens their ears to instruction
    and commands that they (N)return from iniquity.
11 (O)If they listen and serve him,
    they (P)complete their days in prosperity,
    and their years in pleasantness.
12 But if they do not listen, they (Q)perish by the sword
    and die (R)without knowledge.

13 “The (S)godless in heart cherish anger;
    they do not cry for help when he (T)binds them.
14 They (U)die in youth,
    and their life ends among the cult prostitutes.
15 He delivers (V)the afflicted by their affliction
    and (W)opens their ear by adversity.
16 He also allured you out of distress
    into (X)a broad place where there was no cramping,
    and what was set on your (Y)table was full of (Z)fatness.

17 “But you are full of the judgment on the wicked;
    judgment and justice seize you.
18 Beware lest wrath entice you into scoffing,
    and let not the greatness of (AA)the ransom turn you aside.
19 Will your (AB)cry for help avail to keep you from distress,
    or all the force of your strength?
20 Do not long for (AC)the night,
    when peoples vanish (AD)in their place.
21 Take care; (AE)do not turn to iniquity,
    for this you have chosen rather than affliction.
22 Behold, God is exalted in his power;
    who is (AF)a teacher like him?
23 Who has (AG)prescribed for him his way,
    or who can say, (AH)‘You have done wrong’?

24 “Remember to (AI)extol his work,
    of which men have (AJ)sung.
25 All mankind has looked on it;
    man beholds it from afar.
26 Behold, God is great, and we (AK)know him not;
    the number of his (AL)years is unsearchable.
27 For he draws up the drops of water;
    they distill his (AM)mist in (AN)rain,
28 which (AO)the skies pour down
    and drop on mankind abundantly.
29 Can anyone understand (AP)the spreading of the clouds,
    the thunderings of his (AQ)pavilion?
30 Behold, he scatters his lightning about him
    and covers the roots of the sea.
31 For by these he (AR)judges peoples;
    he gives (AS)food in abundance.
32 He covers his (AT)hands with the lightning
    and commands it to strike the mark.
33 Its crashing declares his presence;[a]
    the cattle also declare that he rises.

Shepherd the Flock of God

So I exhort the elders among you, (A)as a fellow elder and (B)a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: (C)shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,[a] (D)not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;[b] (E)not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not (F)domineering over those in your charge, but (G)being examples to the flock. And when (H)the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the (I)unfading (J)crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. (K)Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for (L)“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

(M)Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, (N)casting all your anxieties on him, because (O)he cares for you. (P)Be sober-minded; (Q)be watchful. Your (R)adversary the devil (S)prowls around (T)like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (U)Resist him, (V)firm in your faith, knowing that (W)the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And (X)after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, (Y)who has called you to his (Z)eternal glory in Christ, will himself (AA)restore, (AB)confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 (AC)To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

12 By (AD)Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, (AE)I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is (AF)the true grace of God. (AG)Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does (AH)Mark, my son. 14 (AI)Greet one another with the kiss of love.

(AJ)Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
