Psalm 18:1-20

The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, ^(A)the servant of the Lord, ^(B)who addressed the words of this ^(C)song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:

18 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
²The Lord is my ^(D)rock and my ^(E)fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my ^(F)rock, in ^(G)whom I take refuge,
    my ^(H)shield, and ^(I)the horn of my salvation, my ^(J)stronghold.
³I call upon the Lord, who is ^(K)worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.

⁴^(L)The cords of death encompassed me;
^(M)the torrents of destruction assailed me;^[a]
⁵^(N)the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.

⁶^(O)In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I cried for help.
From his ^(P)temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.

⁷Then the earth ^(Q)reeled and rocked;
    the foundations also of the mountains trembled
    and quaked, because he was angry.
⁸Smoke went up from his nostrils,^[b]
    and devouring ^(R)fire from his mouth;
    glowing coals flamed forth from him.
⁹He ^(S)bowed the heavens and ^(T)came down;
    ^(U)thick darkness was under his feet.
¹⁰He rode on a cherub and flew;
    he came swiftly on ^(V)the wings of the wind.
¹¹He made darkness his covering, his ^(W)canopy around him,
    thick clouds ^(X)dark with water.
¹²Out of the brightness before him
    ^(Y)hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.

¹³The Lord also ^(Z)thundered in the heavens,
    and the Most High uttered his ^(AA)voice,
    hailstones and coals of fire.
¹⁴And he sent out his ^(AB)arrows and scattered them;
    he flashed forth lightnings and ^(AC)routed them.
¹⁵Then ^(AD)the channels of the sea were seen,
    and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your ^(AE)rebuke, O Lord,
    at the blast of ^(AF)the breath of your nostrils.

¹⁶He ^(AG)sent from on high, he took me;
    he ^(AH)drew me out of ^(AI)many waters.
¹⁷He rescued me from my strong enemy
    and from those who hated me,
    for they were ^(AJ)too mighty for me.
¹⁸They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.
¹⁹He brought me out into ^(AK)a broad place;
    he rescued me, because he ^(AL)delighted in me.

²⁰The Lord dealt with me ^(AM)according to my righteousness;
according to ^(AN)the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.

The Song of Moses

15 Then Moses and the people of Israel ^(A)sang this song to the Lord, saying,

^(B)“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
    the horse and his rider^[a] he has thrown into the sea.
²^(C)The Lord is my strength and my ^(D)song,
    and he has become ^(E)my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
    ^(F)my father's God, and ^(G)I will exalt him.
³The Lord is ^(H)a man of war;
    ^(I)the Lord is his name.

⁴^(J)“Pharaoh's chariots and his host he cast into the sea,
    and his chosen ^(K)officers were sunk in the Red Sea.
⁵The ^(L)floods covered them;
    they ^(M)went down into the depths like a stone.
⁶^(N)Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power,
    your right hand, O Lord, ^(O)shatters the enemy.
⁷In the ^(P)greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries;
    you send out your fury; it ^(Q)consumes them like stubble.
⁸At the ^(R)blast of your nostrils the waters piled up;
    the ^(S)floods stood up in a heap;
    the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.
⁹The enemy said, ^(T)‘I will pursue, I will overtake,
    I ^(U)will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them.
    I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’
¹⁰You ^(V)blew with your wind; the ^(W)sea covered them;
    they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

¹¹^(X)“Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?
    Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
    awesome in ^(Y)glorious deeds, ^(Z)doing wonders?
¹²You stretched out ^(AA)your right hand;
    the earth swallowed them.

¹³“You have ^(AB)led in your steadfast love the people whom ^(AC)you have redeemed;
    you have ^(AD)guided them by your strength to your holy abode.
¹⁴^(AE)The peoples have heard; they tremble;
    pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia.
¹⁵Now are the chiefs of Edom ^(AF)dismayed;
    trembling seizes the leaders of ^(AG)Moab;
    ^(AH)all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.
¹⁶Terror and ^(AI)dread fall upon them;
    because of the greatness of your arm, they are still ^(AJ)as a stone,
till your people, O Lord, pass by,
    till the people pass by whom ^(AK)you have purchased.
¹⁷You will bring them in and ^(AL)plant them on your own mountain,
    the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode,
    ^(AM)the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established.
¹⁸^(AN)The Lord will reign forever and ever.”

¹⁹For when ^(AO)the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, ^(AP)the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. ²⁰Then ^(AQ)Miriam ^(AR)the prophetess, the ^(AS)sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and ^(AT)all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. ²¹And Miriam sang to them:

^(AU)“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Bitter Water Made Sweet

²²Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of ^(AV)Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. ²³When they came to ^(AW)Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah.^[b] ²⁴And the people ^(AX)grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” ²⁵And he ^(AY)cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log,^[c] and he ^(AZ)threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord^[d] made for them a statute and a rule, and there he ^(BA)tested them, ²⁶saying, ^(BB)“If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the ^(BC)diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, ^(BD)your healer.”

²⁷Then ^(BE)they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there by the water.

The Transfiguration

17 ^(A)And after six days Jesus took with him ^(B)Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. ²And he was ^(C)transfigured before them, and ^(D)his face shone like the sun, and ^(E)his clothes became white as light. ³And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. ⁴And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for ^(F)Elijah.” ⁵He was still speaking when, behold, ^(G)a bright cloud overshadowed them, and ^(H)a voice from the cloud said, ^(I)“This is my beloved Son,^[a] with whom I am well pleased; ^(J)listen to him.” ⁶When ^(K)the disciples heard this, ^(L)they fell on their faces and were terrified. ⁷But Jesus came and ^(M)touched them, saying, “Rise, and ^(N)have no fear.” ⁸And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

⁹^(O)And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, ^(P)“Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” ¹⁰And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say ^(Q)that first Elijah must come?” ¹¹He answered, “Elijah does come, and ^(R)he will restore all things. ¹²But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but ^(S)did to him whatever they pleased. ^(T)So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” ¹³^(U)Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

¹⁴^(V)And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, ¹⁵said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has ^(W)seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. ¹⁶And I brought him to your disciples, and ^(X)they could not heal him.” ¹⁷And Jesus answered, “O faithless and ^(Y)twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? ^(Z)How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” ¹⁸And Jesus ^(AA)rebuked the demon,^[b] and it^[c] came out of him, and ^(AB)the boy was healed instantly.^[d] ¹⁹Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” ²⁰He said to them, ^(AC)“Because of your little faith. For ^(AD)truly, I say to you, ^(AE)if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, ^(AF)you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and ^(AG)nothing will be impossible for you.”^[e]

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

²²^(AH)As they were gathering^[f] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, ²³and they will kill him, and he will be raised on ^(AI)the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.
