Sing to the Lord a New Song

149 (A)Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord (B)a new song,
    his praise in (C)the assembly of the godly!
Let Israel (D)be glad in (E)his Maker;
    let the children of Zion rejoice in their (F)King!
Let them praise his name with (G)dancing,
    making melody to him with (H)tambourine and (I)lyre!
For the Lord (J)takes pleasure in his people;
    he (K)adorns the humble with salvation.
Let the godly exult in glory;
    let them (L)sing for joy on their (M)beds.
Let (N)the high praises of God be in their throats
    and (O)two-edged swords in their hands,
to execute vengeance on the nations
    and punishments on the peoples,
to bind their kings with (P)chains
    and their nobles with fetters of iron,
to execute on them the judgment (Q)written!
    (R)This is honor for all his godly ones.
(S)Praise the Lord!

Let Everything Praise the Lord

150 (T)Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his (U)sanctuary;
    praise him in (V)his mighty heavens![a]
Praise him for his (W)mighty deeds;
    praise him according to his excellent (X)greatness!

Praise him with (Y)trumpet sound;
    praise him with (Z)lute and (AA)harp!
Praise him with (AB)tambourine and (AC)dance;
    praise him with (AD)strings and (AE)pipe!
Praise him with sounding (AF)cymbals;
    praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let (AG)everything that has breath praise the Lord!
(AH)Praise the Lord!

  1. Psalm 150:1 Hebrew expanse (compare Genesis 1:6–8)

The Destruction of Nineveh

(A)The scatterer has come up against you.
    (B)Man the ramparts;
    watch the road;
dress for battle;[a]
    collect all your strength.

For (C)the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
    as the majesty of Israel,
for plunderers have plundered them
    and (D)ruined their branches.

The shield of his mighty men is red;
    (E)his soldiers are clothed in scarlet.
The chariots come with flashing metal
    on the day he musters them;
    the cypress spears are brandished.
(F)The chariots race madly through the streets;
    they rush to and fro through the squares;
they gleam like torches;
    they dart like lightning.
He remembers (G)his officers;
    (H)they stumble as they go,
they hasten to the wall;
    the siege tower[b] is set up.
(I)The river gates are opened;
    the palace (J)melts away;
its mistress[c] is (K)stripped;[d] she is carried off,
    her slave girls (L)lamenting,
moaning like doves
    and beating their breasts.
(M)Nineveh is like a pool
    whose waters run away.[e]
“Halt! Halt!” they cry,
    but (N)none turns back.
Plunder the silver,
    plunder the gold!
There is no end of the treasure
    or of the wealth of all precious things.

10 (O)Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    (P)Hearts melt and (Q)knees tremble;
(R)anguish is in all loins;
    (S)all faces grow pale!
11 Where is the lions' den,
    the feeding place of (T)the young lions,
where the lion and lioness went,
    where his cubs were, with (U)none to disturb?
12 (V)The lion tore enough for his cubs
    and (W)strangled prey for his lionesses;
he filled his caves with prey
    and his dens with torn flesh.

13 (X)Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and (Y)I will burn your[f] chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and (Z)the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

Woe to Nineveh

Woe to (AA)the bloody city,
    all full of lies and plunder—
    (AB)no end to the prey!
The crack of the whip, and (AC)rumble of the wheel,
    (AD)galloping horse and (AE)bounding chariot!
Horsemen charging,
    flashing sword and (AF)glittering spear,
(AG)hosts of slain,
    heaps of corpses,
dead bodies without end—
    they stumble over the bodies!
And all for the countless whorings of the (AH)prostitute,
    (AI)graceful and of deadly charms,
who betrays nations with her whorings,
    and peoples with her charms.

(AJ)Behold, I am against you,
    declares the Lord of hosts,
    and (AK)will lift up your skirts over your face;
and I will make nations look at (AL)your nakedness
    and kingdoms at your shame.
I will throw filth at you
    and (AM)treat you with contempt
    and make you (AN)a spectacle.
And all who look at you (AO)will shrink from you and say,
“Wasted is (AP)Nineveh; (AQ)who will grieve for her?”
    (AR)Where shall I seek comforters for you?

(AS)Are you better than (AT)Thebes[g]
    that sat (AU)by the Nile,
with water around her,
    her rampart a sea,
    and water her wall?
(AV)Cush was her strength;
    Egypt too, and that without limit;
    (AW)Put and the (AX)Libyans were her[h] helpers.

10 (AY)Yet she became an exile;
    she went into captivity;
(AZ)her infants were dashed in pieces
    at the head of every street;
for her honored men (BA)lots were cast,
    (BB)and all her great men were bound in chains.
11 (BC)You also will be drunken;
    you will go into hiding;
(BD)you will seek a refuge from the enemy.
12 All your fortresses are (BE)like fig trees
    with first-ripe figs—
if shaken they fall
    into the mouth of the eater.
13 Behold, your troops
    (BF)are women in your midst.
The gates of your land
    are wide open to your enemies;
    fire has devoured your bars.

14 (BG)Draw water for the siege;
    (BH)strengthen your forts;
go into the clay;
    tread the mortar;
    take hold of the brick mold!
15 There will the fire devour you;
    the sword will cut you off.
    It will (BI)devour you (BJ)like the locust.
Multiply yourselves (BK)like the locust;
    multiply (BL)like the grasshopper!
16 You increased (BM)your merchants
    more than the stars of the heavens.
    (BN)The locust spreads its wings and flies away.

17 Your (BO)princes are (BP)like grasshoppers,
    (BQ)your scribes[i] like clouds of locusts
settling on the fences
    in a day of cold—
when the sun rises, they fly away;
    no one knows where they are.

18 Your shepherds (BR)are asleep,
    O king of Assyria;
    (BS)your nobles slumber.
Your people (BT)are scattered on the mountains
    with none to gather them.
19 There is no easing your hurt;
    (BU)your wound is grievous.
All who hear the news about you
    (BV)clap their hands over you.
For (BW)upon whom has not come
    your unceasing evil?

The Word Became Flesh

(A)In the beginning was (B)the Word, and (C)the Word was with God, and (D)the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. (E)All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. (F)In him was life,[a] and (G)the life was the light of men. (H)The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man (I)sent from God, whose name was (J)John. He came as a (K)witness, to bear witness about the light, (L)that all might believe through him. (M)He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

(N)The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet (O)the world did not know him. 11 He came to (P)his own,[b] and (Q)his own people[c] (R)did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, (S)who believed in his name, (T)he gave the right (U)to become (V)children of God, 13 who (W)were born, (X)not of blood (Y)nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And (Z)the Word (AA)became flesh and (AB)dwelt among us, (AC)and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son[d] from the Father, full of (AD)grace and (AE)truth. 15 ((AF)John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, (AG)‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 For from (AH)his fullness we have all received, (AI)grace upon grace.[e] 17 For (AJ)the law was given through Moses; (AK)grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 (AL)No one has ever seen God; (AM)the only God,[f] who is at the Father's side,[g] (AN)he has made him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 And this is the (AO)testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, (AP)“Who are you?” 20 (AQ)He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? (AR)Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you (AS)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am (AT)the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight[h] the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, (AU)“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, (AV)“I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even (AW)he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
