Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

139 O Lord, you have ^(A)searched me and known me!
²You ^(B)know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you ^(C)discern my thoughts from afar.
³You search out my path and my lying down
    and are acquainted with all my ways.
⁴Even before a word is on my tongue,
    behold, O Lord, ^(D)you know it altogether.
⁵You ^(E)hem me in, behind and before,
    and ^(F)lay your hand upon me.
⁶^(G)Such knowledge is ^(H)too wonderful for me;
    it is high; I cannot attain it.

⁷^(I)Where shall I go from your Spirit?
    Or where ^(J)shall I flee from your presence?
⁸^(K)If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
    ^(L)If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
⁹If I take the wings of the morning
    and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
¹⁰even there your hand shall ^(M)lead me,
    and your right hand shall hold me.
¹¹If I say, ^(N)“Surely the darkness shall cover me,
    and the light about me be night,”
¹²^(O)even the darkness is not dark to you;
    the night is bright as the day,
    for darkness is as light with you.

⁹The ^(A)Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them ^(B)encamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.

¹⁰When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel ^(C)cried out to the Lord. ¹¹They ^(D)said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? ¹²Is not this what ^(E)we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” ¹³And Moses said to the people, ^(F)“Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For ^(G)the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. ¹⁴^(H)The Lord will fight for you, and you have only ^(I)to be silent.”

¹⁵The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. ¹⁶^(J)Lift up your staff, and ^(K)stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground. ¹⁷And ^(L)I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and ^(M)I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. ¹⁸And the Egyptians ^(N)shall know that I am the Lord, ^(O)when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

¹⁹^(P)Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, ²⁰coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night^[a] without one coming near the other all night.

²¹Then Moses ^(Q)stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by ^(R)a strong east wind all night and ^(S)made the sea dry land, and the waters were ^(T)divided. ²²And ^(U)the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being ^(V)a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. ²³The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. ²⁴And in the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, ²⁵clogging^[b] their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the ^(W)Lord fights for them against the Egyptians.”

A Tree and Its Fruit

¹⁵^(A)“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ^(B)ravenous wolves. ¹⁶You will recognize them ^(C)by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? ¹⁷So, ^(D)every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. ¹⁹^(E)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ²⁰Thus you will recognize them ^(F)by their fruits.
