Psalm 135

Your Name, O Lord, Endures Forever

135 ^(A)Praise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord,
    give praise, O ^(B)servants of the Lord,
²who ^(C)stand in the house of the Lord,
    in ^(D)the courts of the house of our God!
³Praise the Lord, for ^(E)the Lord is good;
    sing to his name, ^(F)for it is pleasant!^[a]
⁴For the Lord has ^(G)chosen Jacob for himself,
    Israel as his ^(H)own possession.

⁵For I know that ^(I)the Lord is great,
    and that our Lord is above all gods.
⁶^(J)Whatever the Lord pleases, he does,
    in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and all deeps.
⁷^(K)He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth,
    who ^(L)makes lightnings for the rain
    and brings forth the wind from his ^(M)storehouses.

⁸He it was who ^(N)struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
    both of man and of beast;
⁹who in your midst, O Egypt,
    sent ^(O)signs and wonders
    against Pharaoh and all his servants;
¹⁰^(P)who struck down many nations
    and killed mighty kings,
¹¹^(Q)Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    and ^(R)Og, king of Bashan,
    and ^(S)all the kingdoms of Canaan,
¹²and ^(T)gave their land as a heritage,
    a heritage to his people Israel.

¹³^(U)Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
^(V)your renown,^[b] O Lord, throughout all ages.
¹⁴^(W)For the Lord will vindicate his people
and ^(X)have compassion on his servants.

¹⁵^(Y)The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.
¹⁶They have mouths, but do not speak;
    they have eyes, but do not see;
¹⁷they have ears, but do not hear,
    nor is there any breath in their mouths.
¹⁸Those who make them become like them;
    so do all who trust in them.

¹⁹^(Z)O house of Israel, bless the Lord!
    O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!
²⁰O house of Levi, bless the Lord!
    You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
²¹Blessed be the Lord ^(AA)from Zion,
    he who ^(AB)dwells in Jerusalem!

Zion's Coming Salvation

62 ^(A)For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,
    and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet,
^(B)until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
    and her salvation as a burning torch.
²^(C)The nations shall see your righteousness,
    and all the kings your glory,
^(D)and you shall be called by a new name
    that the mouth of the Lord will give.
³You shall be ^(E)a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
⁴^(F)You shall no more be termed ^(G)Forsaken,^[a]
    and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,^[b]
^(H)but you shall be called ^(I)My Delight Is in Her,^[c]
    and your land Married;^[d]
for the Lord delights in you,
    and your land shall be married.
⁵For as a young man marries a young woman,
    so ^(J)shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
    so ^(K)shall your God rejoice over you.

⁶On your walls, O Jerusalem,
    I have set ^(L)watchmen;
all the day and all the night
    they shall never be silent.
You who put the Lord in remembrance,
    take no rest,
⁷and give him no rest
    until he establishes Jerusalem
    and makes it ^(M)a praise in the earth.
⁸The Lord has sworn ^(N)by his right hand
    and by his mighty arm:
“I will not again give ^(O)your grain
    to be food for your enemies,
^(P)and foreigners shall not drink your wine
    for which you have labored;
⁹but ^(Q)those who garner it shall eat it
    and praise the Lord,
and ^(R)those who gather it shall drink it
    in the courts of my sanctuary.”^[e]

¹⁰Go through, go through the gates;
    ^(S)prepare the way for the people;
^(T)build up, build up the highway;
    clear it of stones;
    ^(U)lift up a signal over the peoples.
¹¹Behold, the Lord has proclaimed
    to the end of the earth:
^(V)Say to the daughter of Zion,
    ^(W)“Behold, your salvation comes;
behold, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense before him.”
¹²^(X)And they shall be called The Holy People,
    The Redeemed of the Lord;
^(Y)and you shall be called Sought Out,
    A City Not Forsaken.

Wives and Husbands

3 Likewise, wives, ^(A)be subject to your own husbands, so that ^(B)even if some do not obey the word, ^(C)they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, ²when they see your ^(D)respectful and pure conduct. ³^(E)Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— ⁴but let your adorning be ^(F)the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. ⁵For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, ⁶as Sarah obeyed Abraham, ^(G)calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and ^(H)do not fear anything that is frightening.

⁷Likewise, ^(I)husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker ^(J)vessel, since they are heirs with you^[a] of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Suffering for Righteousness' Sake

⁸Finally, all of you, ^(K)have unity of mind, sympathy, ^(L)brotherly love, ^(M)a tender heart, and ^(N)a humble mind. ⁹^(O)Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, ^(P)bless, for ^(Q)to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. ¹⁰For

^(R)“Whoever desires to love life
    and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil
    and his lips from speaking deceit;
¹¹let him turn away from evil and do good;
    let him seek peace and pursue it.
¹²For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and his ears are open to their prayer.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

¹³Now ^(S)who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? ¹⁴^(T)But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. ^(U)Have no fear of them, ^(V)nor be troubled, ¹⁵but ^(W)in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, ^(X)always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and ^(Y)respect, ¹⁶^(Z)having a good conscience, so that, ^(AA)when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. ¹⁷For ^(AB)it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

¹⁸For Christ also ^(AC)suffered^[b] ^(AD)once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, ^(AE)that he might bring us to God, being put to death ^(AF)in the flesh but made alive ^(AG)in the spirit, ¹⁹in which^[c] he went and ^(AH)proclaimed^[d] to the spirits in prison, ²⁰because^[e] they formerly did not obey, ^(AI)when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, ^(AJ)while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, ^(AK)eight persons, were brought safely through water. ²¹Baptism, which corresponds to this, ^(AL)now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but ^(AM)as an appeal to God for a good conscience, ^(AN)through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, ²²who has gone into heaven and ^(AO)is at the right hand of God, ^(AP)with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
