Our Eyes Look to the Lord Our God

A Song of ^(A)Ascents.

123 To you I ^(B)lift up my eyes,
    O you who are ^(C)enthroned in the heavens!
²Behold, as the eyes of servants
    look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maidservant
    to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
    till he has mercy upon us.

³^(D)Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
    for we have had more than enough of ^(E)contempt.
⁴Our soul has had more than enough
    of ^(F)the scorn of ^(G)those who are at ease,
    of the contempt of ^(H)the proud.

The Song of Deborah and Barak

5 ^(A)Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day:

²“That the leaders took the lead in Israel,
that ^(B)the people offered themselves willingly,
bless the Lord!

³“Hear, O kings; give ear, O princes;
to the Lord I will sing;
I will make melody to the Lord, the God of Israel.

⁴“Lord, ^(C)when you went out from Seir,
    when you marched from the region of Edom,
^(D)the earth trembled
    and the heavens dropped,
    yes, the clouds dropped water.
⁵The mountains ^(E)quaked before the Lord,
    ^(F)even Sinai before the Lord,^[a] the God of Israel.

⁶“In the days of ^(G)Shamgar, son of Anath,
    in the days of ^(H)Jael, ^(I)the highways were abandoned,
    and travelers kept to the byways.
⁷The villagers ceased in Israel;
    they ceased to be until I arose;
    I, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel.
⁸^(J)When new gods were chosen,
    then war was in the gates.
^(K)Was shield or spear to be seen
    among forty thousand in Israel?
⁹My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel
    who ^(L)offered themselves willingly among the people.
    Bless the Lord.

¹⁰“Tell of it, ^(M)you who ride on white donkeys,
    you who sit on rich carpets^[b]
    and you who walk by the way.
¹¹To the sound of musicians^[c] at the watering places,
    there they repeat the righteous triumphs of the Lord,
    the righteous triumphs of his villagers in Israel.

“Then down to the gates marched the people of the Lord.

Awake, awake, break out in a song!
Arise, Barak, ^(O)lead away your captives,
O son of Abinoam.

Return of an Unclean Spirit

⁴³“When ^(A)the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through ^(B)waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. ⁴⁴Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. ⁴⁵Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and ^(C)the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this ^(D)evil generation.”
