Psalm 122

A Prayer for Jerusalem

A Davidic song of ascents.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”(A)
Our feet are standing
within your gates, Jerusalem(B)

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,
solidly joined together,(C)
where the tribes, Yahweh’s tribes, go up
to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.(D)
(This is an ordinance for Israel.(E))
There, thrones for judgment are placed,
thrones of the house of David.(F)

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you prosper;(G)
may there be peace within your walls,
prosperity within your fortresses.”(H)
Because of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “Peace be with you.”(I)
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your good.(J)

Psalm 123

Looking for God’s Favor

A song of ascents.

I lift my eyes to You,
the One enthroned in heaven.(K)
Like a servant’s eyes on his master’s hand,
like a servant girl’s eyes on her mistress’s hand,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God
until He shows us favor.(L)

Show us favor, Lord, show us favor,
for we’ve had more than enough contempt.(M)
We’ve had more than enough
scorn from the arrogant
and contempt from the proud.(N)

Psalm 124

The Lord Is on Our Side

A Davidic song of ascents.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
let Israel say—
If the Lord had not been on our side(O)
when men attacked us,(P)
then they would have swallowed us alive
in their burning anger against us.(Q)
Then the waters would have engulfed us;
the torrent would have swept over us;
the raging waters would have swept over us.(R)

Praise the Lord,
who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.(S)
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net;
the net is torn, and we have escaped.(T)
Our help is in the name of Yahweh,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(U)

Psalm 125

Israel’s Stability

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion.
It cannot be shaken; it remains forever.(V)
Jerusalem—the mountains surround her.
And the Lord surrounds His people,
both now and forever.(W)

The scepter of the wicked will not remain
over the land allotted to the righteous,
so that the righteous will not apply their hands to injustice.(X)
Do what is good, Lord, to the good,
to those whose hearts are upright.(Y)
But as for those who turn aside to crooked ways,
the Lord will banish them with the evildoers.(Z)

Peace be with Israel.(AA)

Psalm 126

Zion’s Restoration

A song of ascents.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,[a]
we were like those who dream.(AB)
Our mouths were filled with laughter then,(AC)
and our tongues with shouts of joy.(AD)
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”(AE)
The Lord had done great things for us;
we were joyful.(AF)

Restore our fortunes,[b] Lord,
like watercourses in the Negev.(AG)
Those who sow in tears
will reap with shouts of joy.(AH)
Though one goes along weeping,
carrying the bag of seed,
he will surely come back with shouts of joy,
carrying his sheaves.(AI)

Psalm 127

The Blessing of the Lord

A Solomonic song of ascents.

Unless the Lord builds a house,
its builders labor over it in vain;(AJ)
unless the Lord watches over a city,
the watchman stays alert in vain.(AK)
In vain you get up early and stay up late,
working hard to have enough food—
yes, He gives sleep to the one He loves.[c](AL)

Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord,
children, a reward.(AM)
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons born in one’s youth.(AN)
Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them.(AO)
Such men will never be put to shame
when they speak with their enemies at the city gate.(AP)

Psalm 128

Blessings for Those Who Fear God

A song of ascents.

How happy is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in His ways!(AQ)
You will surely eat
what your hands have worked for.(AR)
You will be happy,
and it will go well for you.(AS)
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house,
your sons, like young olive trees
around your table.(AT)
In this very way
the man who fears the Lord
will be blessed.(AU)

May the Lord bless you from Zion,
so that you will see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life(AV)
and will see your children’s children!

Peace be with Israel.(AW)

Psalm 129

Protection of the Oppressed

A song of ascents.

Since my youth they have often attacked me—
let Israel say—
Since my youth they have often attacked me,
but they have not prevailed against me.(AX)
Plowmen plowed over my back;
they made their furrows long.(AY)
The Lord is righteous;
He has cut the ropes of the wicked.(AZ)

Let all who hate Zion
be driven back in disgrace.(BA)
Let them be like grass on the rooftops,
which withers before it grows up[d](BB)
and can’t even fill the hands of the reaper
or the arms of the one who binds sheaves.(BC)
Then none who pass by will say,
“May the Lord’s blessing be on you.”

We bless you in the name of Yahweh.(BD)

Psalm 130

Awaiting Redemption

A song of ascents.

Out of the depths I call to You, Yahweh!(BE)
Lord, listen to my voice;
let Your ears be attentive
to my cry for help.(BF)

Yahweh, if You considered sins,
Lord, who could stand?(BG)
But with You there is forgiveness,
so that You may be revered.(BH)

I wait for Yahweh; I wait
and put my hope in His word.(BI)
I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning—
more than watchmen for the morning.(BJ)

Israel, put your hope in the Lord.(BK)
For there is faithful love with the Lord,
and with Him is redemption in abundance.(BL)
And He will redeem Israel
from all its sins.(BM)

Psalm 131

A Childlike Spirit

A Davidic song of ascents.

Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.(BN)
I do not get involved with things
too great or too difficult for me.(BO)
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself
like a little weaned child with its mother;
I am like a little child.(BP)

Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
both now and forever.(BQ)

Psalm 132

David and Zion Chosen

A song of ascents.

Lord, remember David
and all the hardships he endured,(BR)
and how he swore an oath to the Lord,
making a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(BS)
“I will not enter my house[e]
or get into my bed,[f]
I will not allow my eyes to sleep
or my eyelids to slumber(BT)
until I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”(BU)

We heard of the ark in Ephrathah;[g](BV)
we found it in the fields of Jaar.[h](BW)
Let us go to His dwelling place;
let us worship at His footstool.(BX)
Rise up, Lord, come to Your resting place,
You and Your powerful ark.(BY)
May Your priests be clothed with righteousness,
and may Your godly people shout for joy.(BZ)
10 Because of Your servant David,
do not reject Your anointed one.[i](CA)

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,
a promise He will not abandon:
“I will set one of your descendants[j]
on your throne.(CB)
12 If your sons keep My covenant
and My decrees that I will teach them,
their sons will also sit on your throne forever.”(CC)

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
He has desired it for His home:(CD)
14 “This is My resting place forever;
I will make My home here
because I have desired it.(CE)
15 I will abundantly bless its food;
I will satisfy its needy with bread.(CF)
16 I will clothe its priests with salvation,
and its godly people will shout for joy.(CG)
17 There I will make a horn grow for David;(CH)
I have prepared a lamp for My anointed one.(CI)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(CJ)
but the crown he wears[k] will be glorious.”(CK)

Psalm 133

Living in Harmony

A Davidic song of ascents.

How good and pleasant it is
when brothers live together in harmony!(CL)
It is like fine oil on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down Aaron’s beard
onto his robes.(CM)
It is like the dew of Hermon[l]
falling on the mountains of Zion.(CN)
For there the Lord has appointed the blessing—
life forevermore.(CO)

Psalm 134

Call to Evening Worship

A song of ascents.

Now praise the Lord,

Maker of heaven and earth,
bless you from Zion.(CR)

sing praise to His name, for it is delightful.(CU)
For Yahweh has chosen Jacob for Himself,
Israel as His treasured possession.(CV)

For I know that Yahweh is great;
our Lord is greater than all gods.(CW)
Yahweh does whatever He pleases
in heaven and on earth,
in the seas and all the depths.(CX)
He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain
and brings the wind from His storehouses.(CY)

He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
both man and beast.(CZ)
He sent signs and wonders against you, Egypt,
against Pharaoh and all his officials.(DA)
10 He struck down many nations
and slaughtered mighty kings:(DB)
11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
Og king of Bashan,
and all the kings of Canaan.(DC)
12 He gave their land as an inheritance,
an inheritance to His people Israel.(DD)

13 Yahweh, Your name endures forever,
Your reputation, Yahweh,
through all generations.(DE)
14 For Yahweh will vindicate His people
and have compassion on His servants.(DF)

15 The idols of the nations are of silver and gold,
made by human hands.(DG)
16 They have mouths but cannot speak,(DH)
eyes, but cannot see.
17 They have ears but cannot hear;
indeed, there is no breath in their mouths.(DI)
18 Those who make them are just like them,
as are all who trust in them.(DJ)

Psalm 137

Lament of the Exiles

By the rivers of Babylon—
there we sat down and wept
when we remembered Zion.(EH)
There we hung up our lyres
on the poplar trees,(EI)
for our captors there asked us for songs,
and our tormentors, for rejoicing:
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”(EJ)

How can we sing the Lord’s song
on foreign soil?(EK)
If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.(EL)
May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
if I do not exalt Jerusalem as my greatest joy!(EM)

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites said
that day[m] at Jerusalem:
“Destroy it! Destroy it
down to its foundations!”(EN)
Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy is the one who pays you back
what you have done to us.(EO)
Happy is he who takes your little ones
and dashes them against the rocks.(EP)

You understand my thoughts from far away.(FC)
You observe my travels and my rest;
You are aware of all my ways.(FD)
Before a word is on my tongue,
You know all about it, Lord.(FE)
You have encircled me;
You have placed Your hand on me.(FF)
This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me.
It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.(FG)

Where can I go to escape Your Spirit?
Where can I flee from Your presence?(FH)
If I go up to heaven, You are there;(FI)
if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.(FJ)
If I live at the eastern horizon
or settle at the western limits,[q]
10 even there Your hand will lead me;
Your right hand will hold on to me.(FK)
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me,
and the light around me will be night”(FL)
12 even the darkness is not dark to You.
The night shines like the day;
darkness and light are alike to You.(FM)

13 For it was You who created my inward parts;[r]
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.(FN)
14 I will praise You
because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made.[s][t]
Your works are wonderful,
and I know this very well.(FO)
15 My bones were not hidden from You
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.(FP)
16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in Your book and planned
before a single one of them began.(FQ)

17 God, how difficult[u] Your thoughts are
for me to comprehend;
how vast their sum is!
18 If I counted them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand;(FR)
when I wake up,[v] I am still with You.(FS)

19 God, if only You would kill the wicked—
you bloodthirsty men, stay away from me(FT)
20 who invoke You deceitfully.
Your enemies swear by You falsely.(FU)
21 Lord, don’t I hate those who hate You,
and detest those who rebel against You?
22 I hate them with extreme hatred;
I consider them my enemies.(FV)

23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.(FW)
24 See if there is any offensive[w] way in me;
lead me in the everlasting way.(FX)

viper’s venom is under their lips.(GA)Selah

Protect me, Lord,

Let evil relentlessly[z] hunt down a violent man.(GJ)

the upright will live in Your presence.(GL)

keep watch at the door of my lips.(GP)
Do not let my heart turn to any evil thing

it is oil for my head;
let me[ab] not refuse it.(GR)
Even now my prayer is against
the evil acts of the wicked.[ac](GS)
When their rulers[ad] will be thrown off
the sides of a cliff,
the people[ae] will listen to my words,
for they are pleasing.(GT)

As when one plows and breaks up the soil,
turning up rocks,
so our[af] bones have been scattered
at the mouth of Sheol.(GU)

But my eyes look to You, Lord God.
I seek refuge in You; do not let me die.[ag](GV)
