¹⁵³Look on my ^(A)affliction and deliver me,
    for ^(B)I do not forget your law.
¹⁵⁴^(C)Plead my cause and redeem me;
    ^(D)give me life according to your promise!
¹⁵⁵^(E)Salvation is far from the wicked,
    ^(F)for they do not seek your statutes.
¹⁵⁶^(G)Great is your mercy, O Lord;
    ^(H)give me life according to your rules.
¹⁵⁷^(I)Many are my persecutors and my adversaries,
    but I do not ^(J)swerve from your testimonies.
¹⁵⁸I look at ^(K)the faithless with ^(L)disgust,
    because they do not keep your commands.
¹⁵⁹Consider how I ^(M)love your precepts!
    ^(N)Give me life, O Lord, according to your steadfast love.
¹⁶⁰^(O)The sum of your word is ^(P)truth,
    and every one of your ^(Q)righteous rules endures forever.

Zophar Speaks: The Wicked Will Suffer

20 Then ^(A)Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:

²“Therefore my ^(B)thoughts answer me,
    because of my haste within me.
³I hear censure that insults me,
    and out of my understanding a spirit answers me.
⁴Do you not know this from of old,
    ^(C)since man was placed on earth,
⁵^(D)that the exulting of the wicked is short,
    and the joy of the godless but for a moment?
⁶^(E)Though his height mount up to the heavens,
    and his head reach to the clouds,
⁷he will perish forever like his own ^(F)dung;
    those who have seen him will say, ^(G)‘Where is he?’
⁸He will fly away like ^(H)a dream and not be found;
    he will be chased away like a vision of the night.
⁹^(I)The eye that saw him will see him no more,
    nor will his place any more behold him.
¹⁰His children will seek the favor of the poor,
    and his hands will ^(J)give back his wealth.
¹¹His bones are full of his ^(K)youthful vigor,
    but it will lie ^(L)down with him in the dust.

¹²“Though evil is sweet in his mouth,
    though he hides it ^(M)under his tongue,
¹³though he is loath to let it go
    and holds it in his mouth,
¹⁴yet his food is turned in his stomach;
    it is the venom of ^(N)cobras within him.
¹⁵He swallows down riches and vomits them up again;
    God casts them out of his belly.
¹⁶He will suck the poison of cobras;
    ^(O)the tongue of a viper will kill him.
¹⁷He will not look upon ^(P)the rivers,
    the streams flowing with ^(Q)honey and ^(R)curds.
¹⁸He will ^(S)give back the fruit of his toil
    and will not ^(T)swallow it down;
from the profit of his trading
    he will get no enjoyment.
¹⁹For he has crushed and abandoned the poor;
    he has seized a house that he did not build.

²⁰“Because he ^(U)knew no ^(V)contentment in his belly,
    ^(W)he will not let anything in which he delights escape him.
²¹There was nothing left after he had eaten;
    therefore his prosperity will not endure.
²²In the fullness of his sufficiency he will be in distress;
    the hand of everyone in misery will come against him.
²³To fill his belly to the full,
    God^[a] will send his burning anger against him
    and rain it upon him ^(X)into his body.
²⁴^(Y)He will flee from an iron weapon;
    ^(Z)a bronze arrow will strike ^(AA)him through.
²⁵It ^(AB)is drawn forth and comes out of his body;
    ^(AC)the glittering point comes out of his ^(AD)gallbladder;
    ^(AE)terrors come upon him.
²⁶Utter darkness is laid up for his treasures;
    ^(AF)a fire not fanned will devour him;
    what is left in his tent will be consumed.
²⁷^(AG)The heavens will reveal his iniquity,
    and the earth will rise up against him.
²⁸The possessions of his house will be carried away,
    dragged off in the day of God's^[b] wrath.
²⁹^(AH)This is the wicked man's portion from God,
    ^(AI)the heritage decreed for him by God.”

The Full Assurance of Faith

¹⁹^(A)Therefore, brothers,^[a] since we have confidence to enter ^(B)the holy places by the blood of Jesus, ²⁰by ^(C)the new and living way that he opened for us through ^(D)the curtain, that is, through his flesh, ²¹and since we have ^(E)a great priest over the house of God, ²²let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts ^(F)sprinkled clean ^(G)from an evil conscience and our bodies ^(H)washed with pure water. ²³^(I)Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for ^(J)he who promised is faithful. ²⁴And ^(K)let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, ²⁵^(L)not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and ^(M)all the more as you see ^(N)the Day drawing near.

²⁶For ^(O)if we go on sinning deliberately ^(P)after receiving the knowledge of the truth, ^(Q)there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, ²⁷^(R)but a fearful expectation of judgment, and ^(S)a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. ²⁸^(T)Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy ^(U)on the evidence of two or three witnesses. ²⁹How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one ^(V)who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned ^(W)the blood of the covenant ^(X)by which he was sanctified, and has ^(Y)outraged the Spirit of grace? ³⁰For we know him who said, ^(Z)“Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, ^(AA)“The Lord will judge his people.” ³¹^(AB)It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

³²But recall the former days when, after ^(AC)you were enlightened, you endured ^(AD)a hard struggle with sufferings, ³³sometimes being ^(AE)publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. ³⁴For ^(AF)you had compassion on those in prison, and ^(AG)you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had ^(AH)a better possession and an abiding one. ³⁵Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has ^(AI)a great reward. ³⁶For ^(AJ)you have need of endurance, so that ^(AK)when you have done the will of God you may ^(AL)receive what is promised. ³⁷For,

^(AM)“Yet a little while,
and ^(AN)the coming one will come and will not delay;
³⁸^(AO)but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
