¹⁰⁵^(A)Your word is a lamp to my feet
    and a light to my path.
¹⁰⁶I have ^(B)sworn an oath and confirmed it,
    to keep your ^(C)righteous rules.
¹⁰⁷I am severely ^(D)afflicted;
    ^(E)give me life, O Lord, according to your word!
¹⁰⁸Accept ^(F)my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord,
    and ^(G)teach me your rules.
¹⁰⁹I hold my life ^(H)in my hand continually,
    but I do not ^(I)forget your law.
¹¹⁰The wicked have laid ^(J)a snare for me,
    but ^(K)I do not stray from your precepts.
¹¹¹Your testimonies are ^(L)my heritage forever,
    for they are ^(M)the joy of my heart.
¹¹²I ^(N)incline my heart to perform your statutes

    and I am afraid of your judgments.

¹²¹I have done what is just and right;
    do not leave me to my oppressors.
¹²²Give your servant ^(AF)a pledge of good;
    let not ^(AG)the insolent oppress me.
¹²³My ^(AH)eyes long for your salvation
    and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.
¹²⁴Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love,
    and ^(AI)teach me your statutes.
¹²⁵I am your ^(AJ)servant; ^(AK)give me understanding,
    that I may know your testimonies!
¹²⁶It is time for the Lord to act,
    for your law has been broken.
¹²⁷Therefore I ^(AL)love your commandments
    above gold, above fine gold.
¹²⁸Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right;
    I hate every ^(AM)false way.

1 The words of Amos, who was among the ^(A)shepherds^[a] of ^(B)Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel ^(C)in the days of ^(D)Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of ^(E)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years^[b] before ^(F)the earthquake.

Judgment on Israel's Neighbors

²And he said:

^(G)“The Lord roars from Zion
and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
^(H)the pastures of the shepherds mourn,
and the ^(I)top of ^(J)Carmel withers.”

³Thus says the Lord:

^(K)“For three transgressions of ^(L)Damascus,
    and for four, ^(M)I will not revoke the punishment,^[c]
because they have threshed ^(N)Gilead
    with threshing sledges of iron.
⁴^(O)So I will send a fire upon the house of ^(P)Hazael,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of ^(Q)Ben-hadad.
⁵I will ^(R)break the gate-bar of ^(S)Damascus,
    and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of ^(T)Aven,^[d]
and him who holds the scepter from ^(U)Beth-eden;
    and the people of ^(V)Syria shall go into exile to ^(W)Kir,”
says the Lord.

⁶Thus says the Lord:

^(X)“For three transgressions of ^(Y)Gaza,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because ^(Z)they carried into exile a whole people
    to deliver them up to Edom.
⁷So I will send a fire upon the wall of ^(AA)Gaza,
    and it shall devour her strongholds.
⁸I will cut off the inhabitants from ^(AB)Ashdod,
    and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
    and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”
says the Lord God.

⁹Thus says the Lord:

^(AC)“For three transgressions of ^(AD)Tyre,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they delivered up a whole people to Edom,
    and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
¹⁰So I will send a fire upon the wall of ^(AE)Tyre,
    and it shall devour her strongholds.”

¹¹Thus says the Lord:

^(AF)“For three transgressions of ^(AG)Edom,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
^(AH)because he pursued his brother with the sword
    ^(AI)and cast off all pity,
^(AJ)and his anger tore perpetually,
    ^(AK)and he kept his wrath forever.
¹²So I will send a fire upon ^(AL)Teman,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of ^(AM)Bozrah.”

¹³Thus says the Lord:

^(AN)“For three transgressions of the ^(AO)Ammonites,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because ^(AP)they have ripped open pregnant women in ^(AQ)Gilead,
    that they might enlarge their border.
¹⁴So I will kindle a fire in the wall of ^(AR)Rabbah,
    ^(AS)and it shall devour her strongholds,
with shouting on the day of battle,
    ^(AT)with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind;
¹⁵and ^(AU)their king shall go into exile,
    he and his princes^[e] together,”
says the Lord.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

¹⁶^(A)“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and ^(B)again a little while, and you will see me.” ¹⁷So ^(C)some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ^(D)‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ^(E)‘because I am going to the Father’?” ¹⁸So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? ^(F)We do not know what he is talking about.” ¹⁹^(G)Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? ²⁰Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(H)you will weep and lament, but ^(I)the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but ^(J)your sorrow will turn into joy. ²¹^(K)When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. ²²^(L)So also you have sorrow now, but ^(M)I will see you again, and ^(N)your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. ²³^(O)In that day you will ^(P)ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(Q)whatever you ask of the Father in my name, ^(R)he will give it to you. ²⁴Until now you have asked nothing in my name. ^(S)Ask, and you will receive, ^(T)that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

²⁵“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. ^(U)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. ²⁶In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; ²⁷^(V)for the Father himself loves you, because ^(W)you have loved me and ^(X)have believed that I came from God.^[a] ²⁸^(Y)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now ^(Z)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

²⁹His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not ^(AA)using figurative speech! ³⁰Now we know that ^(AB)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that ^(AC)you came from God.” ³¹Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? ³²Behold, ^(AD)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when ^(AE)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and ^(AF)will leave me alone. ^(AG)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. ³³I have said these things to you, that ^(AH)in me you may have peace. ^(AI)In the world you will have ^(AJ)tribulation. But ^(AK)take heart; ^(AL)I have overcome the world.”
