Psalm 119

The Glories of God’s Law

Happy are those whose way is blameless,
    who walk in the law of the Lord.(A)
Happy are those who keep his decrees,
    who seek him with their whole heart,
who also do no wrong
    but walk in his ways.(B)
You have commanded your precepts
    to be kept diligently.
O that my ways may be steadfast
    in keeping your statutes!
Then I shall not be put to shame,
    having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.(C)
I will praise you with an upright heart,
    when I learn your righteous ordinances.(D)
I will observe your statutes;
    do not utterly forsake me.

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes,
    and I will observe it to the end.(A)
34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
    and observe it with my whole heart.(B)
35 Lead me in the path of your commandments,
    for I delight in it.
36 Turn my heart to your decrees
    and not to selfish gain.(C)
37 Turn my eyes from looking at vanities;
    be gracious to me[a] according to your word.(D)
38 Confirm to your servant your promise,
    which is for those who fear you.(E)
39 Turn away the disgrace that I dread,
    for your ordinances are good.
40 See, I have longed for your precepts;
    in your righteousness be gracious to me.[b](F)

41 Let your steadfast love come to me, O Lord,
    your salvation according to your promise.(G)
42 Then I shall have an answer for those who taunt me,
    for I trust in your word.(H)

The Christian’s Call and Election

His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by[a] his own glory and excellence.(A) Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust and may become participants of the divine nature.(B) For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with excellence, and excellence with knowledge,(C) and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.(D) For anyone who lacks these things is blind, suffering from eye disease, forgetful of the cleansing of past sins.(E) 10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble. 11 For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

12 Therefore I intend to keep on reminding you of these things, though you know them already and are established in the truth that has come to you.(F) 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body,[b] to refresh your memory,(G) 14 since I know that my death[c] will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(H) 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

Eyewitnesses of Christ’s Glory

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.(I) 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved,[d] with whom I am well pleased.”(J) 18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.(K)

19 So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.(L) 20 First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s[e] own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.[f](M)
