Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

114 When (A)Israel went out from Egypt,
    the house of Jacob from (B)a people of strange language,
Judah became his (C)sanctuary,
    Israel his dominion.

(D)The sea looked and fled;
    (E)Jordan turned back.
(F)The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.

What (G)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
    O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
    O hills, like lambs?

(H)Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns (I)the rock into (J)a pool of water,
    (K)the flint into a spring of water.

To Your Name Give Glory

115 (L)Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
    (M)for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Why should the nations say,
    (N)“Where is their God?”
(O)Our God is in the heavens;
    (P)he does all that he pleases.

(Q)Their idols are silver and gold,
    (R)the work of human hands.
They have mouths, (S)but do not speak;
    eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
    noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
    feet, but do not walk;
    and they do not make a sound in their throat.
(T)Those who make them become like them;
    so do all who trust in them.

O (U)Israel,[a] (V)trust in the Lord!
    He is their (W)help and their shield.
10 O (X)house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and (Y)their shield.
11 You (Z)who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and their shield.

12 The Lord has remembered us; he will bless us;
    he will bless (AA)the house of Israel;
    he will bless (AB)the house of Aaron;
13 he will (AC)bless those who fear the Lord,
    (AD)both the small and the great.

14 May the Lord (AE)give you increase,
    you and your children!
15 May (AF)you be blessed by the Lord,
    (AG)who made heaven and earth!

16 The heavens are the Lord's heavens,
    but the earth he has given to the children of man.
17 (AH)The dead do not praise the Lord,
    nor do any who go down into (AI)silence.
18 But (AJ)we will bless the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore.
(AK)Praise the Lord!

  1. Psalm 115:9 Masoretic Text; many Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Syriac O house of Israel

Many Signs and Wonders Done

12 Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people (A)by the hands of the apostles. And they were all (B)together in (C)Solomon's Portico. 13 None of the rest dared join them, but (D)the people held them in high esteem. 14 And (E)more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15 (F)so that they even (G)carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by (H)at least his shadow might fall on some of them. 16 The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, (I)bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

The Apostles Arrested and Freed

17 But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of (J)the Sadducees), and filled with (K)jealousy 18 they arrested the apostles and (L)put them in the public prison. 19 But during the night (M)an angel of the Lord (N)opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all (O)the words of (P)this (Q)Life.” 21 And when they heard this, (R)they entered the temple (S)at daybreak and began to teach.

Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, 23 “We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside.” 24 Now when (T)the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. 25 And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison (U)are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” 26 Then (V)the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for (W)they were afraid of being stoned by the people.

27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, 28 saying, (X)“We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you (Y)intend to bring this man's blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, (Z)“We must obey God rather than men. 30 (AA)The God of our fathers (AB)raised Jesus, (AC)whom you killed by hanging him on (AD)a tree. 31 God exalted (AE)him at his right hand as (AF)Leader and (AG)Savior, (AH)to give (AI)repentance to Israel and (AJ)forgiveness of sins. 32 And (AK)we are witnesses to these things, and (AL)so is the Holy Spirit, (AM)whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33 When they heard this, they (AN)were enraged and wanted to kill them. 34 But a Pharisee in the council named (AO)Gamaliel, (AP)a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36 For (AQ)before these days Theudas rose up, (AR)claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of (AS)the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38 So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for (AT)if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39 but (AU)if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You (AV)might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, 40 and (AW)when they had called in the apostles, (AX)they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 Then they left the presence of the council, (AY)rejoicing that they were counted worthy (AZ)to suffer dishonor for (BA)the name. 42 And every day, (BB)in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and (BC)preaching (BD)that the Christ is Jesus.
