Psalm 114

God’s Deliverance of Israel

¹When Israel came out of Egypt—
the house of Jacob from a people
who spoke a foreign language^(A)—
²Judah became his sanctuary,
Israel, his dominion.^(B)

³The sea looked and fled;^(C)
the Jordan turned back.^(D)
⁴The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills, like lambs.^(E)
⁵Why was it, sea, that you fled?
Jordan, that you turned back?^(F)
⁶Mountains, that you skipped like rams?
Hills, like lambs?^(G)

⁷Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,^(H)
⁸who turned the rock into a pool,
the flint into a spring.^(I)

²⁸Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also praises her:
²⁹“Many women^[a] have done noble deeds,
but you surpass them all!” ^(A)
³⁰Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting,^(B)
but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
³¹Give her the reward of her labor,^[b]
and let her works praise her at the city gates.

On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.^(B) ⁴⁰As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well. ⁴¹And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two. ⁴²Give to the one who asks you, and don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.^(C)
