Psalm 112:1-2

New International Version

Psalm 112^[a]

¹Praise the Lord.^[b]^(A)

Blessed are those^(B) who fear the Lord,^(C)
who find great delight^(D) in his commands.

²Their children^(E) will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.

⁷They will have no fear of bad news;
    their hearts are steadfast,^(A) trusting in the Lord.^(B)
⁸Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;^(C)
    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.^(D)
⁹They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,^(E)
    their righteousness endures^(F) forever;
    their horn^[a] will be lifted^(G) high in honor.

New International Version

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar^(A)

¹³Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians^(B) to Jesus to catch him^(C) in his words. ¹⁴They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax^[a] to Caesar or not? ¹⁵Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”

But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” ¹⁶They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

¹⁷Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”^(D)

And they were amazed at him.
