Great Are the Lord's Works

111 ^[a] ^(A)Praise the Lord!
I ^(B)will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
    in the company of ^(C)the upright, in the congregation.
²Great are the ^(D)works of the Lord,
    ^(E)studied by all who delight in them.
³^(F)Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
    and his ^(G)righteousness endures forever.
⁴He has ^(H)caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and merciful.
⁵He provides food for those who fear him;
    he ^(I)remembers his covenant forever.
⁶He has shown his people the power of his works,
    in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
⁷The works of his hands are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are ^(J)trustworthy;
⁸they are ^(K)established forever and ever,
    to be performed with ^(L)faithfulness and uprightness.
⁹He sent ^(M)redemption to his people;
    he has ^(N)commanded his covenant forever.
    ^(O)Holy and awesome is his name!
¹⁰^(P)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
    all those who practice it have ^(Q)a good understanding.
    His ^(R)praise endures forever!

The Righteous Will Never Be Moved

112 ^[a] ^(A)Praise the Lord!
^(B)Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who ^(C)greatly delights in his commandments!
²His ^(D)offspring will be mighty in the land;
    ^(E)the generation of the upright will be blessed.
³^(F)Wealth and riches are in his house,
    and his ^(G)righteousness endures forever.
⁴Light dawns in the darkness ^(H)for the upright;
    he is gracious, merciful, and ^(I)righteous.
⁵It is well with the man who ^(J)deals generously and lends;
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
⁶For the righteous will ^(K)never be moved;
    ^(L)he will be remembered forever.
⁷He is not ^(M)afraid of bad news;
    his ^(N)heart is firm, ^(O)trusting in the Lord.
⁸His heart is steady;^[b] he will not be afraid,
    until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
⁹He has ^(P)distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever;
    his ^(Q)horn is exalted in honor.
¹⁰The wicked man sees it and is angry;
    he ^(R)gnashes his teeth and ^(S)melts away;
    ^(T)the desire of the wicked will perish!

Ish-bosheth Murdered

4 When Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, heard that Abner had died at Hebron, ^(A)his courage failed, and all Israel was dismayed. ²Now Saul's son had two men who were captains of raiding bands; the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Rimmon a man of Benjamin from Beeroth (^(B)for Beeroth also is counted part of Benjamin; ³^(C)the Beerothites fled ^(D)to Gittaim and have been sojourners there to this day).

⁴^(E)Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son who was crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan ^(F)came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled, and as she fled in her haste, he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

⁵Now the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, set out, and about the heat of the day they came to the house of Ish-bosheth as he was taking his noonday rest. ⁶And they came into the midst of the house as if to get wheat, and they stabbed him ^(G)in the stomach. Then Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.^[a] ⁷When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. They took his head and went by the way of ^(H)the Arabah all night, ⁸and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. And they said to the king, “Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, ^(I)who sought your life. The Lord has avenged my lord the king this day on Saul and on his offspring.” ⁹But David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, ^(J)“As the Lord lives, ^(K)who has redeemed my life out of every adversity, ¹⁰^(L)when one told me, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, ^(M)I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. ¹¹How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now ^(N)require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?” ¹²And David commanded his young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it ^(O)in the tomb of Abner at Hebron.

The Example of Christ

15 ^(A)We who are strong ^(B)have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. ²^(C)Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. ³For ^(D)Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, ^(E)“The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” ⁴For ^(F)whatever was written in former days was written for our ^(G)instruction, that through endurance and through ^(H)the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. ⁵May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you ^(I)to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, ⁶that together you may with one voice glorify ^(J)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁷Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles

⁸For I tell you that Christ ^(K)became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order ^(L)to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, ⁹and in order ^(M)that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

^(N)“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
and sing to your name.”

¹⁰And again it says,

^(O)“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”

¹¹And again,

^(P)“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples extol him.”

¹²And again Isaiah says,

^(Q)^(R)“The root of Jesse will come,
even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
^(S)in him will the Gentiles hope.”

¹³May the God of hope fill you with all ^(T)joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

¹⁴^(U)I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers,^[a] that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with ^(V)all knowledge and able to instruct one another. ¹⁵But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, ^(W)because of the grace given me by God ¹⁶to be ^(X)a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles ^(Y)in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that ^(Z)the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. ¹⁷In Christ Jesus, then, I have ^(AA)reason to be proud of ^(AB)my work for God. ¹⁸For I will not venture to speak of anything except ^(AC)what Christ has accomplished through me ^(AD)to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, ¹⁹^(AE)by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that ^(AF)from Jerusalem and all the way around ^(AG)to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; ²⁰and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, ^(AH)lest I build on someone else's foundation, ²¹but as it is written,

and those who have never heard will understand.”

Paul's Plan to Visit Rome

²²This is the reason why ^(AJ)I have so often been hindered from coming to you. ²³But now, since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and ^(AK)since I have longed for many years to come to you, ²⁴I hope to see you in passing as I go ^(AL)to Spain, and ^(AM)to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while. ²⁵At present, however, ^(AN)I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. ²⁶For ^(AO)Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. ²⁷For they were pleased to do it, and indeed ^(AP)they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings. ²⁸When therefore I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected,^[b] I will leave ^(AQ)for Spain by way of you. ²⁹I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing^[c] of Christ.

³⁰I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by ^(AR)the love of the Spirit, ^(AS)to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, ³¹^(AT)that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that ^(AU)my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, ³²so that by God's will I may come to you with joy and ^(AV)be refreshed in your company. ³³May ^(AW)the God of peace be with you all.
