26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul (A)melted away in their misery.
27 They reeled and (B)staggered like a drunken person,
And [a]were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
29 He (C)caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves [b]of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He guided them to their desired harbor.
31 (D)They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy,
And for His [c](E)wonders to the sons of mankind!
32 They shall also (F)exalt Him (G)in the congregation of the people,
And (H)praise Him at the seat of the elders.

33 He (I)turns rivers into a [d]wilderness,
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
34 And a (J)fruitful land into a (K)salt waste,
Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35 He (L)turns a [e]wilderness into a pool of water,
And a dry land into springs of water;
36 And He has the hungry live there,
So that they may establish [f](M)an inhabited city,
37 And sow fields and (N)plant vineyards,
And [g]gather a fruitful harvest.

26 Their ships were tossed to the heavens
    and plunged again to the depths;
    the sailors cringed in terror.
27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards
and were at their wits’ end.
28 Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
29 He calmed the storm to a whisper
    and stilled the waves.
30 What a blessing was that stillness
as he brought them safely into harbor!
31 Let them praise the Lord for his great love
and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
32 Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation
and before the leaders of the nation.

33 He changes rivers into deserts,
and springs of water into dry, thirsty land.
34 He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands,
because of the wickedness of those who live there.
35 But he also turns deserts into pools of water,
the dry land into springs of water.
36 He brings the hungry to settle there
    and to build their cities.
37 They sow their fields, plant their vineyards,
    and harvest their bumper crops.

26 You were tossed to the sky
    and to the ocean depths,
until things looked so bad
    that you lost your courage.
27 You staggered like drunkards
    and gave up all hope.
28 You were in serious trouble,
but you prayed to the Lord,
    and he rescued you.
29 He made the storm stop
    and the sea be quiet.
30 You were happy because of this,
and he brought you to the port
    where you wanted to go.

31 You should praise the Lord
    for his love
and for the wonderful things
he does for all of us.
32 Honor the Lord
when you and your leaders
    meet to worship.

33 If you start doing wrong,
the Lord will turn rivers
    into deserts,
34 (A) flowing streams
    into scorched land,
and fruitful fields
    into beds of salt.

35 But the Lord can also turn
    deserts into lakes
and scorched land
    into flowing streams.
36 If you are hungry,
you can settle there
    and build a town.
37 You can plant fields
and vineyards that produce
    a good harvest.
