Psalm 106

Israel’s Rebelliousness and the Lord’s Deliverances.
106 Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!)
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His mercy and lovingkindness endure forever!(A)
2
Who can put into words the mighty deeds of the Lord?
Or who can proclaim all His praise [that is due Him]?
3
Blessed are those who observe justice [by honoring God’s precepts],
Who practice righteousness at all times.
4
Remember me, O Lord, when You favor Your people.
Visit me with Your salvation [when You rescue them],
5
That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones,
That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation,
That I may glory with Your inheritance.
6
We have sinned like our fathers;
We have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly.(B)
7
Our fathers in Egypt did not understand nor appreciate Your miracles;
They did not remember the abundance of Your mercies nor imprint Your lovingkindnesses on their hearts,
But they were rebellious at the sea, at the [a]Red Sea.(C)
8
Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake,
That He might make His [supreme] power known.
9
He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up;
And He led them through the depths as through a pasture.(D)
10
So He saved them from the hand of the one that hated them,
And redeemed them from the hand of the [Egyptian] enemy.(E)
11
And the waters covered their adversaries;
Not one of them was left.(F)
12
Then Israel believed in [the validity of] His words;
They sang His praise.
13
But they quickly forgot His works;
They did not [patiently] wait for His counsel and purpose [to be revealed regarding them],
14
But lusted intensely in the wilderness
And tempted God [with their insistent desires] in the desert.(G)
15
So He gave them their request,
But sent a wasting disease among them.(H)
16
They envied Moses in the camp,
And Aaron [the high priest], the holy one of the Lord,(I)
17
Therefore the earth opened and swallowed Dathan,
And engulfed the company of Abiram.(J)
18
And a fire broke out in their company;
The flame consumed the wicked.(K)
19
They made a calf in Horeb (Sinai)
And worshiped a cast image.(L)
20
Thus they exchanged [the true God who was] their glory
For the image of an ox that eats grass.
21
They forgot God their Savior,
Who had done such great things in Egypt,
22
Wonders in the land of Ham,
Awesome things at the Red Sea.
23
Therefore He said He would destroy them,
[And He would have done so] had not Moses, His chosen one, stepped into the gap before Him,
To turn away His wrath from destroying them.(M)
24
Then they despised the pleasant land [of Canaan];
They did not believe in His word nor rely on it,
25
But they sulked and complained in their tents;
They did not listen to the voice of the Lord.
26
Therefore He lifted up His hand [swearing] to them,
That He would cause them to fall in the wilderness,
27
And that He would cast out their descendants among the nations
And scatter them in the lands [of the earth].
28
They joined themselves also to [the idol] Baal of Peor,
And ate sacrifices offered to the dead.
29
Thus they provoked Him to anger with their practices,
And a plague broke out among them.
30
Then Phinehas [the priest] stood up and [b]interceded,
And so the plague was halted.(N)
31
And that was credited to him for righteousness,
To all generations forever.
32
They provoked Him to anger at the waters of [c]Meribah,
So that it went hard with Moses on their account;(O)
33
Because they were rebellious against His Spirit,
Moses spoke recklessly with his lips.
34
They did not destroy the [pagan] peoples [in Canaan],
As the Lord commanded them,
35
But they mingled with the [idolatrous] nations
And learned their ways,
36
And served their idols,
Which became a [dreadful] snare to them.
37
They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons(P)
38
And shed innocent blood,
Even the blood of their sons and of their daughters,
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And the land was polluted with their blood.
39
In this way they became unclean in their practices;
They played the prostitute in their own deeds [by giving their worship, which belongs to God alone, to other “gods”].
40
Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against His people
And He detested His own [d]inheritance.(Q)
41
He gave them into the hands of the nations,
And those who hated them ruled over them.
42
Their enemies also oppressed them,
And they were subdued under the [powerful] hand of their enemies.
43
Many times He rescued them;
But they were rebellious in their counsel,
And sank down in their wickedness.
44
Nevertheless He looked [sympathetically] at their distress
When He heard their cry;
45
And He remembered His covenant for their sake,
And relented [rescinding their sentence] according to the greatness of His lovingkindness [when they cried out to Him],
46
He also made them objects of compassion
Among those who had carried them away captive.(R)
47
Save us, O Lord our God,
And gather us from among the nations,
That we may give thanks to Your holy name
And glory in praising You.
48
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting even to everlasting.
And let all the people say, “Amen.”

- Psalm 106:7 Lit Sea of Reeds; and so throughout.
- Psalm 106:30 The exact meaning of the Hebrew here has been debated since ancient times. The term interceded probably is best because it could refer to Phinehas’ intervention by executing the guilty couple (Num 25:7f), or to his interceding through prayer in behalf of Israel. No such prayer is recorded, but it is certainly possible that Phinehas prayed for relief before or after the execution. The ancient rabbis mostly understood the intercession as a prayer, but some of them took the meaning of the Hebrew to be that Phinehas interceded essentially by arguing with God as to whether it was fair to destroy so many people for the sins of two.

106 Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who can shew forth all his praise?
3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.
4 Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation;
5 That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.

7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.
8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.

23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.
24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:
25 But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord.
26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:
27 To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.
28 They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.
29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.
30 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.
31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.
32 They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:
33 Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.
34 They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the Lord commanded them:
35 But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.
36 And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.
37 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,
38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.
39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.
40 Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.
41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.
43 Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.
44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:
45 And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
46 He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.
47 Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.
48 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the Lord.

106 Alleluia. Celebrate l'Eterno, perché egli è buono, perché la sua benignità dura in eterno.
2 Chi può narrare le gesta dell'Eterno o proclamare tutta la sua lode?
3 Beati coloro che osservano la giustizia, che fanno ciò che è giusto in ogni tempo,
4 Ricordati di me, o Eterno, secondo la benevolenza che usi verso il tuo popolo, e visitami con la tua salvezza,
5 affinché veda la prosperità dei tuoi eletti, mi rallegri nella gioia della tua nazione e mi glori con la tua eredità.
6 Noi e i nostri padri abbiamo peccato, abbiamo commesso iniquità e abbiamo fatto il male.
7 I nostri padri in Egitto non compresero le tue meraviglie, non si ricordarono del gran numero dei tuoi benefici e si ribellarono presso il mare, il Mar Rosso.
8 Ciò nonostante il Signore li salvò per amore del suo nome, per far conoscere la sua potenza.
9 Sgridò il Mar Rosso e si seccò, e li guidò attraverso gli abissi come attraverso un deserto.

13 Ben presto però dimenticarono le sue opere e non aspettarono fiduciosi l'adempimento del suo disegno.
14 si accesero di cupidigia nel deserto e tentarono DIO nella solitudine.
15 Ed egli diede loro quanto chiedevano, ma mandò fra loro un morbo che assottigliò il loro numero.
16 Quando nel campo divennero invidiosi di Mosé e di Aaronne, il santo dell'Eterno,
17 la terra si aperse, e inghiottí Dathan e seppellí il gruppo di Abiram.
18 Un fuoco divampò nel loro mezzo e la fiamma divorò gli empi.
19 Fecero un vitello in Horeb e adorarono un'immagine di metallo fuso,
20 e mutarono la loro gloria con l'immagine di un bue che mangia l'erba.
21 Dimenticarono DIO, loro Salvatore, che aveva fatto cose grandi in Egitto,
22 prodigi nel paese di Cam, cose tremende al Mar Rosso.
23 Perciò egli parlò di sterminarli, ma Mosé, suo eletto, si presentò sulla breccia davanti a lui, per impedire all'ira sua di distruggerli.
24 Essi disprezzarono ancora il paese delizioso, non credettero alla sua parola,
25 ma mormorarono nelle loro tende e non diedero ascolto alla voce dell'Eterno.
26 Perciò egli alzò la mano contro di loro, giurando di farli cadere nel deserto,
27 e di far perire i loro discendenti fra le nazioni e di disperderli per tutti i paesi.
28 Essi servirono anche Baal-Peor e mangiarono i sacrifici dei morti.
29 Irritarono DIO con le loro azioni, e una pestilenza scoppiò in mezzo a loro.
30 Ma Finehas si alzò e fece giustizia; e la pestilenza cessò.
31 E ciò gli fu messo in conto di giustizia di generazione in generazione, per sempre.
32 Essi lo provocarono ancora presso le acque di Meriba, e ne venne del male a Mosé per causa loro,
33 perché inasprirono il suo (di Mosé) spirito, ed egli parlò avventatamente con le sue labbra.
34 Essi non distrussero i popoli, come l'Eterno aveva loro comandato;
35 ma si mescolarono fra le nazioni e impararono le loro opere;
36 servirono i loro idoli, e questi divennero un laccio per loro;
37 sacrificarono i loro figli e le loro figlie ai demoni,
38 e sparsero il sangue innocente, il sangue dei loro figli e delle loro figlie, che sacrificarono agli idoli di Canaan; e il paese fu contaminato dal sangue versato.
39 Cosí essi si contaminarono con le loro opere e si prostituirono coi loro atti.
40 E l'ira dell'Eterno si accese contro il suo popolo, ed egli ebbe in abominio la sua eredità.
41 Li diede in potere delle nazioni, e quelli che li odiavano li dominarono.
42 I loro nemici li oppressero, e furono sottomessi al loro potere.
43 Egli li liberò molte volte, ma essi continuarono a ribellarsi e sprofondarono nelle loro iniquità.
44 Tuttavia egli prestò attenzione alla loro angoscia, quando udì il loro grido,
45 e si ricordò del suo patto con loro e nella sua grande misericordia si placò.
46 Fece trovar loro favore presso tutti quelli che li avevano condotti in cattività.
47 Salvaci, o Eterno, DIO nostro, e raccoglici fra le nazioni, affinché celebriamo il tuo santo nome e ci gloriamo nel lodarti.
48 Benedetto sia l'Eterno, DIO d'Israele, d'eternità in eternità. E tutto il popolo dica: «Amen». Alleluia.
