Psalm 106
English Standard Version
Give Thanks to the Lord, for He Is Good
106Â (A)Praise the Lord!
(B)Oh give thanks to the Lord, (C)for he is good,
(D)for his steadfast love endures forever!
2Â Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord,
or declare all his praise?
3Â Blessed are they who observe justice,
who (E)do righteousness at all times!
4Â (F)Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people;
help me when you save them,[a]
5Â that I may look upon the prosperity of your (G)chosen ones,
that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,
that I may glory with your inheritance.
6Â (H)Both we and (I)our fathers have sinned;
we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.
7Â Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,
did not consider your wondrous works;
they (J)did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,
but (K)rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
8Â Yet he saved them (L)for his name's sake,
(M)that he might make known his mighty power.
9Â He (N)rebuked the Red Sea, and it (O)became dry,
and he (P)led them through the deep as through a desert.
10Â So he (Q)saved them from the hand of the foe
and (R)redeemed them from the power of the enemy.
11Â And (S)the waters covered their adversaries;
not one of them was left.
12Â Then (T)they believed his words;
they (U)sang his praise.
13Â But they soon (V)forgot his works;
they did not wait for (W)his counsel.
14Â But they had (X)a wanton craving in the wilderness,
and (Y)put God to the test in the desert;
15Â he (Z)gave them what they asked,
but sent (AA)a wasting disease among them.
16Â When men in the camp (AB)were jealous of Moses
and Aaron, (AC)the holy one of the Lord,
17Â (AD)the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
and covered the company of Abiram.
18Â (AE)Fire also broke out in their company;
the flame burned up the wicked.
19Â They (AF)made a calf in Horeb
and worshiped a metal image.
20Â They (AG)exchanged the glory of God[b]
for the image of an ox that eats grass.
21Â They (AH)forgot God, their Savior,
who had done great things in Egypt,
22Â wondrous works in (AI)the land of Ham,
and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
23Â Therefore (AJ)he said he would destroy themâ
had not Moses, his (AK)chosen one,
(AL)stood in the breach before him,
to turn away his wrath from destroying them.
24Â Then they (AM)despised (AN)the pleasant land,
having (AO)no faith in his promise.
25Â They (AP)murmured in their tents,
and did not obey the voice of the Lord.
26Â Therefore he (AQ)raised his hand and swore to them
that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
27Â and would make their offspring fall among the nations,
(AR)scattering them among the lands.
28Â Then they (AS)yoked themselves to the (AT)Baal of Peor,
and ate sacrifices offered to (AU)the dead;
29Â they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
and a plague broke out among them.
30Â Then (AV)Phinehas stood up and intervened,
and the plague was stayed.
31Â And that was (AW)counted to him as righteousness
from generation to generation forever.
32Â They (AX)angered him at the waters of Meribah,
and it went ill with Moses on their account,
33Â for they (AY)made his spirit bitter,[c]
and he (AZ)spoke rashly with his lips.
34Â They did not (BA)destroy the peoples,
(BB)as the Lord commanded them,
35Â but they (BC)mixed with the nations
and learned to do as they did.
36Â They served their idols,
which became (BD)a snare to them.
37Â They (BE)sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to (BF)the demons;
38Â they poured out innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was (BG)polluted with blood.
39Â Thus they (BH)became unclean by their acts,
and (BI)played the whore in their deeds.
40Â Then (BJ)the anger of the Lord was kindled against (BK)his people,
and he abhorred his (BL)heritage;
41Â he (BM)gave them into the hand of the nations,
so that those who hated them ruled over them.
42Â Their enemies (BN)oppressed them,
and they were brought into subjection under their power.
43Â (BO)Many times he delivered them,
but they were rebellious in their (BP)purposes
and were (BQ)brought low through their iniquity.
44Â Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
when he (BR)heard their cry.
45Â For their sake he (BS)remembered his covenant,
and (BT)relented according to (BU)the abundance of his steadfast love.
46Â He caused them to be (BV)pitied
by all those who held them captive.
47Â (BW)Save us, O Lord our God,
and (BX)gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
and glory in your praise.
48Â (BY)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting!
(BZ)And let all the people say, âAmen!â
(CA)Praise the Lord!

Idols and the Living God
10Â Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2Â Thus says the Lord:
âLearn not the way of the nations,
nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens
because the nations are dismayed at them,
3Â (A)for the customs of the peoples are vanity.[a]
(B)A tree from the forest is cut down
and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.
4Â (C)They decorate it with silver and gold;
(D)they fasten it with hammer and nails
so that it cannot move.
5Â Their idols[b] are like scarecrows in a cucumber field,
and (E)they cannot speak;
(F)they have to be carried,
for they cannot walk.
Do not be afraid of them,
(G)for they cannot do evil,
neither is it in them to do good.â
6Â (H)There is none like you, O Lord;
you are great, and your name is great in might.
7Â (I)Who would not fear you, O King of the nations?
For this is your due;
for among all the wise ones of the nations
and in all their kingdoms
there is none like you.
8Â (J)They are both (K)stupid and foolish;
the instruction of idols is but wood!
9Â (L)Beaten silver is brought from (M)Tarshish,
and gold from (N)Uphaz.
(O)They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith;
their clothing is violet and purple;
(P)they are all the work of skilled men.
10Â (Q)But the Lord is the true God;
(R)he is the living God and the everlasting King.
At his wrath the earth quakes,
and the nations cannot endure his indignation.
11Â Thus shall you say to them: (S)âThe gods who did not make the heavens and the earth (T)shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.â[c]
12Â (U)It is he who (V)made the earth by his power,
(W)who established the world by his wisdom,
and (X)by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
13Â (Y)When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
(Z)and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth.
(AA)He makes lightning (AB)for the rain,
(AC)and he brings forth the wind (AD)from his storehouses.
14Â (AE)Every man is stupid and without knowledge;
(AF)every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols,
for his images are false,
(AG)and there is no breath in them.
15Â They are worthless, a work of delusion;
at the time of their punishment they shall perish.
16Â Not like these is he who is (AH)the portion of Jacob,
for he is the one who formed all things,
(AI)and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance;
(AJ)the Lord of hosts is his name.
17Â (AK)Gather up your bundle from the ground,
O you who dwell under siege!
18Â For thus says the Lord:
(AL)âBehold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land
at this time,
(AM)and I will bring distress on them,
that they may feel it.â
19Â Woe is me because of my hurt!
(AN)My wound is grievous.
But I said, âTruly this is an affliction,
and I must bear it.â
20Â (AO)My tent is destroyed,
and all my cords are broken;
my children have gone from me,
(AP)and they are not;
there is no one to spread my tent again
and (AQ)to set up my curtains.
21Â (AR)For the shepherds (AS)are stupid
and do not inquire of the Lord;
therefore they have not prospered,
(AT)and all their flock is scattered.
22Â A voice, a rumor! Behold, it comes!â
(AU)a great commotion out of the north country
to make (AV)the cities of Judah a desolation,
(AW)a lair of jackals.
23Â (AX)I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself,
that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
24Â (AY)Correct me, O Lord, but in justice;
not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.
25Â (AZ)Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not,
and on the peoples that call not on your name,
(BA)for they have devoured Jacob;
they have devoured him and consumed him,
and have laid waste his habitation.

The Transfiguration
2Â (A)And after six days Jesus took with him (B)Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was (C)transfigured before them, 3Â and (D)his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one[a] on earth could bleach them. 4Â And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5Â And Peter said to Jesus, (E)âRabbi,[b] it is good that we are here. Let us make three (F)tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.â 6Â For (G)he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7Â And (H)a cloud overshadowed them, and (I)a voice came out of the cloud, (J)âThis is my beloved Son;[c] (K)listen to him.â 8Â And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.
9Â (L)And as they were coming down the mountain, (M)he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, (N)until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10Â (O)So they kept the matter to themselves, (P)questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11Â And they asked him, âWhy do the scribes say (Q)that first Elijah must come?â 12Â And he said to them, âElijah does come first (R)to restore all things. And (S)how is it written of the Son of Man that he should (T)suffer many things and (U)be treated with contempt? 13Â But I tell you that Elijah has come, and (V)they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.â
Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
14Â (W)And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15Â And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, (X)were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16Â And he asked them, âWhat are you arguing about with them?â 17Â And someone from the crowd answered him, âTeacher, I brought my son to you, for he has (Y)a spirit that makes him mute. 18Â And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and (Z)they were not able.â 19Â And he answered them, âO (AA)faithless generation, (AB)how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.â 20Â And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it (AC)convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21Â And Jesus asked his father, âHow long has this been happening to him?â And he said, âFrom childhood. 22Â And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But (AD)if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.â 23Â And Jesus said to him, (AE)ââIf you canâ! (AF)All things are possible for one who believes.â 24Â Immediately the father of the child cried out[d] and said, âI believe; (AG)help my unbelief!â 25Â And when Jesus saw that (AH)a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, (AI)âYou mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.â 26Â And after crying out and (AJ)convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, âHe is dead.â 27Â But Jesus (AK)took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28Â And when he had (AL)entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, âWhy could we not cast it out?â 29Â And he said to them, âThis kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.â[e]
