Psalm 105

God’s Faithfulness to Israel

O give thanks to the Lord; call on his name;
    make known his deeds among the peoples.(A)
Sing to him, sing praises to him;
    tell of all his wonderful works.(B)
Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.(C)
Seek the Lord and his strength;
    seek his presence continually.(D)
Remember the wonderful works he has done,
    his miracles and the judgments he has uttered,(E)
O offspring of his servant Abraham,[a]
    children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

He is the Lord our God;
    his judgments are in all the earth.(F)
He is mindful of his covenant forever,
    of the word that he commanded for a thousand generations,
the covenant that he made with Abraham,
    his sworn promise to Isaac,(G)
10 which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
    to Israel as an everlasting covenant,(H)
11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
    as your portion for an inheritance.”(I)

12 When they were few in number,
    of little account and strangers in it,(J)
13 wandering from nation to nation,
    from one kingdom to another people,
14 he allowed no one to oppress them;
    he rebuked kings on their account,(K)
15 saying, “Do not touch my anointed ones;
    do my prophets no harm.”

16 When he summoned famine against the land
    and cut off every supply of bread,[b](L)
17 he had sent a man ahead of them,
    Joseph, who had been sold as a slave.(M)
18 His feet were hurt with fetters;
    his neck was put in a collar of iron;(N)
19 until what he had said came to pass,
    the word of the Lord kept testing him.(O)
20 The king sent and released him;
    the ruler of the peoples set him free.(P)
21 He made him lord of his house
    and ruler of all his possessions,(Q)
22 to instruct[c] his officials at his pleasure
    and to teach his elders wisdom.

23 Then Israel came to Egypt;
    Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.(R)
24 And the Lord made his people very fruitful
    and made them stronger than their foes,(S)
25 whose hearts he then turned to hate his people,
    to deal craftily with his servants.(T)

26 He sent his servant Moses
    and Aaron, whom he had chosen.(U)
27 They performed his signs among them
    and miracles in the land of Ham.(V)
28 He sent darkness and made the land dark;
    they rebelled[d] against his words.(W)
29 He turned their waters into blood
    and caused their fish to die.(X)
30 Their land swarmed with frogs,
    even in the chambers of their kings.(Y)
31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies
    and gnats throughout their country.(Z)
32 He gave them hail for rain
    and lightning that flashed through their land.(AA)
33 He struck their vines and fig trees
    and shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke, and the locusts came,
    and young locusts without number;(AB)
35 they devoured all the vegetation in their land
    and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He struck down all the firstborn in their land,
    the first issue of all their strength.(AC)

37 Then he brought Israel[e] out with silver and gold,
    and there was no one among their tribes who stumbled.(AD)
38 Egypt was glad when they departed,
    for dread of them had fallen upon it.(AE)
39 He spread a cloud for a covering
    and fire to give light by night.(AF)
40 They asked, and he brought quails
    and gave them food from heaven in abundance.(AG)
41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
    it flowed through the desert like a river.(AH)
42 For he remembered his holy promise
    and Abraham, his servant.(AI)

43 So he brought his people out with joy,
    his chosen ones with singing.
44 He gave them the lands of the nations,
    and they took possession of the wealth of the peoples,(AJ)
45 that they might keep his statutes
    and observe his laws.
Praise the Lord!(AK)

Psalm 1

The Two Ways

Happy are those
    who do not follow the advice of the wicked
or take the path that sinners tread
    or sit in the seat of scoffers,(A)
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and on his law they meditate day and night.(B)
They are like trees
    planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
    and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.(C)

The wicked are not so
    but are like chaff that the wind drives away.(D)
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment
    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous,(E)
for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked will perish.(F)

Psalm 2

God’s Promise to His Anointed

Why do the nations conspire
    and the peoples plot in vain?(G)
The kings of the earth set themselves,
    and the rulers take counsel together,
    against the Lord and his anointed, saying,(H)
“Let us burst their bonds apart
    and cast their cords from us.”

He who sits in the heavens laughs;
    the Lord has them in derision.(I)
Then he will speak to them in his wrath
    and terrify them in his fury, saying,(J)
“I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill.”(K)

I will tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to me, “You are my son;
    today I have begotten you.(L)
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage
    and the ends of the earth your possession.(M)
You shall break them with a rod of iron
    and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”(N)

10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
    be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear;
with trembling(O) 12     kiss his feet,[a]
or he will be angry, and you will perish in the way,
    for his wrath is quickly kindled.

Happy are all who take refuge in him.(P)

Psalm 3

Trust in God under Adversity

A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.

O Lord, how many are my foes!
    Many are rising against me;
many are saying to me,
    “There is no help for you[b] in God.” Selah

But you, O Lord, are a shield around me,
    my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.(Q)
I cry aloud to the Lord,
    and he answers me from his holy hill. Selah(R)

I lie down and sleep;
    I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.(S)
I am not afraid of ten thousands of people
    who have set themselves against me all around.

Rise up, O Lord!
    Deliver me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
    you break the teeth of the wicked.

Deliverance belongs to the Lord;
    may your blessing be on your people! Selah(T)

Psalm 4

Confident Plea for Deliverance from Enemies

To the leader: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

Answer me when I call, O God of my right!
    You gave me room when I was in distress.
    Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.(U)

How long, you people, shall my honor suffer shame?
    How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah(V)
But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;
    the Lord hears when I call to him.(W)

When you are disturbed,[c] do not sin;
    ponder it on your beds, and be silent. Selah(X)
Offer right sacrifices,
    and put your trust in the Lord.(Y)

There are many who say, “O that we might see some good!
    Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!”(Z)
You have put gladness in my heart
    more than when their grain and wine abound.(AA)

I will both lie down and sleep in peace,
    for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.(AB)

Psalm 5

Trust in God for Deliverance from Enemies

To the leader: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.

Listen to my words, O Lord;
    attend to my sighing.(AC)
Listen to the sound of my cry,
    my King and my God,
    for to you I pray.(AD)
O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
    in the morning I plead my case to you and watch.(AE)

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
    evil will not sojourn with you.(AF)
The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
    you hate all evildoers.(AG)
You destroy those who speak lies;
    the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.(AH)

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house;
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in awe of you.(AI)
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies;
    make your way straight before me.(AJ)

For there is no truth in their mouths;
    their hearts are destruction;
their throats are open graves;
    they flatter with their tongues.(AK)
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
    let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions, cast them out,
    for they have rebelled against you.(AL)

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
    so that those who love your name may exult in you.(AM)
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
    you cover them with favor as with a shield.(AN)

Psalm 6

Prayer for Recovery from Grave Illness

To the leader: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.(AO)
Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;
    O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror.(AP)
My soul also is struck with terror,
    while you, O Lord—how long?(AQ)

Turn, O Lord, save my life;
    deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.
For in death there is no remembrance of you;
    in Sheol who can give you praise?(AR)

I am weary with my moaning;
    every night I flood my bed with tears;
    I drench my couch with my weeping.
My eyes waste away because of grief;
    they grow weak because of all my foes.(AS)

Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
    for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.(AT)
The Lord has heard my supplication;
    the Lord accepts my prayer.(AU)
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;
    they shall turn back and in a moment be put to shame.

    do not fret over those who prosper in their way,
    over those who carry out evil devices.(G)

Refrain from anger and forsake wrath.
    Do not fret—it leads only to evil.(H)
For the wicked shall be cut off,
    but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.(I)

    though you look diligently for their place, they will not be there.(J)
11 But the meek shall inherit the land
    and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.(K)

12 The wicked plot against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth at them,(L)
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
    for he sees that their day is coming.(M)

14 The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows
    to bring down the poor and needy,
    to kill those who walk uprightly;(N)
15 their sword shall enter their own heart,
    and their bows shall be broken.(O)

16 Better is a little that the righteous person has
    than the abundance of many wicked.(P)

    and their heritage will abide forever;(R)
19 they are not put to shame in evil times;

    but the righteous are generous and keep giving;(U)
22 surely those blessed by the Lord shall inherit the land,
    but those cursed by him shall be cut off.(V)

23 Our steps[a] are made firm by the Lord
    when he delights in our[b] way;(W)
24 though we stumble, we[c] shall not fall headlong,
    for the Lord holds us[d] by the hand.(X)

25 I have been young and now am old,
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
    or their children begging bread.(Y)
26 They are ever giving liberally and lending,
    and their children become a blessing.(Z)

27 Depart from evil, and do good;
    so you shall abide forever.(AA)
28 For the Lord loves justice;
    he will not forsake his faithful ones.

Psalm 38

A Penitent Sufferer’s Plea for Healing

A Psalm of David, for the memorial offering.

O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.(AO)
For your arrows have sunk into me,
    and your hand has come down on me.(AP)

There is no soundness in my flesh
    because of your indignation;
there is no health in my bones
    because of my sin.(AQ)
For my iniquities have gone over my head;
    they weigh like a burden too heavy for me.(AR)

My wounds grow foul and fester
    because of my foolishness;(AS)
I am utterly bowed down and prostrate;
    all day long I go around mourning.(AT)
For my loins are filled with burning,
    and there is no soundness in my flesh.(AU)
I am utterly spent and crushed;
    I groan because of the tumult of my heart.(AV)

O Lord, all my longing is known to you;
    my sighing is not hidden from you.(AW)
10 My heart throbs; my strength fails me;
    as for the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me.
11 My friends and companions stand aloof from my affliction,
    and my neighbors stand far off.(AX)

12 Those who seek my life lay their snares;
    those who seek to hurt me speak of ruin
    and meditate on treachery all day long.(AY)

13 But I am like the deaf; I do not hear;
    like the mute, who cannot speak.(AZ)
14 Truly, I am like one who does not hear
    and in whose mouth is no retort.

15 But it is for you, O Lord, that I wait;
    it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.(BA)

    those who boast against me when my foot slips.”(BB)

17 For I am ready to fall,
    and my pain is ever with me.(BC)
18 I confess my iniquity;
    I am sorry for my sin.(BD)
19 Those who are my foes without cause[g] are mighty,
    and many are those who hate me wrongfully.(BE)
20 Those who render me evil for good
    are my adversaries because I follow after good.(BF)

21 Do not forsake me, O Lord;
    O my God, do not be far from me;(BG)
22 make haste to help me,
    O Lord, my salvation.(BH)

Psalm 39

Prayer for Wisdom and Forgiveness

To the leader: to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

I said, “I will guard my ways
    that I may not sin with my tongue;
I will keep a muzzle on my mouth
    as long as the wicked are in my presence.”(BI)
I was silent and still;
    I held my peace to no avail;
my distress grew worse;(BJ)
    my heart became hot within me.
While I mused, the fire burned;
    then I spoke with my tongue:

Lord, let me know my end
    and what is the measure of my days;
    let me know how fleeting my life is.(BK)
You have made my days a few handbreadths,
    and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight.
Surely everyone stands as a mere breath. Selah(BL)
    Surely everyone goes about like a shadow.
Surely for nothing they are in turmoil;
    they heap up and do not know who will gather.(BM)

“And now, O Lord, what do I wait for?
    My hope is in you.(BN)
Deliver me from all my transgressions.
    Do not make me the scorn of the fool.(BO)
I am silent; I do not open my mouth,
    for it is you who have done it.(BP)
10 Remove your stroke from me;
    I am worn down by the blows[h] of your hand.(BQ)

11 “You chastise mortals
    in punishment for sin,
consuming like a moth what is dear to them;
    surely everyone is a mere breath. Selah(BR)

12 “Hear my prayer, O Lord,
    and give ear to my cry;
    do not hold your peace at my tears.
For I am your passing guest,
    an alien, like all my forebears.(BS)
13 Turn your gaze away from me, that I may smile again,
    before I depart and am no more.”(BT)

Psalm 40

Thanksgiving for Deliverance and Prayer for Help

To the leader. Of David. A Psalm.

I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he inclined to me and heard my cry.(BU)
He drew me up from the desolate pit,[i]
    out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
    making my steps secure.(BV)
He put a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
    and put their trust in the Lord.(BW)

Happy are those who make
    the Lord their trust,
who do not turn to the proud,
    to those who go astray after false gods.(BX)
You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
    your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
    none can compare with you.
Were I to proclaim and tell of them,
    they would be more than can be counted.(BY)

Sacrifice and offering you do not desire,
    but you have given me an open ear.[j]
Burnt offering and sin offering
    you have not required.(BZ)
Then I said, “Here I am;
    in the scroll of the book it is written of me.[k]
I delight to do your will, O my God;
    your law is within my heart.”(CA)

I have told the glad news of deliverance
    in the great congregation;
see, I have not restrained my lips,
    as you know, O Lord.(CB)
10 I have not hidden your saving help within my heart;
    I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
    from the great congregation.(CC)

11 Do not, O Lord, withhold
    your mercy from me;
let your steadfast love and your faithfulness
    keep me safe forever.(CD)
12 For evils have encompassed me
    without number;
my iniquities have overtaken me
    until I cannot see;
they are more than the hairs of my head,
    and my heart fails me.(CE)

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me;
    O Lord, make haste to help me.(CF)
14 Let all those be put to shame and confusion
    who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be turned back and brought to dishonor
    who desire my hurt.(CG)
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame
    who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”(CH)

16 But may all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
    say continually, “Great is the Lord!”(CI)
17 As for me, I am poor and needy,
    but the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
    do not delay, O my God.(CJ)

Psalm 41

Assurance of God’s Help and a Plea for Healing

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

Happy are those who consider the poor;[l]
    the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble.(CK)
The Lord protects them and keeps them alive;
    they are called happy in the land.
    You do not give them up to the will of their enemies.(CL)
The Lord sustains them on their sickbed;
    in their illness you heal all their infirmities.[m](CM)

As for me, I said, “O Lord, be gracious to me;
    heal me, for I have sinned against you.”(CN)
My enemies wonder in malice
    when I will die and my name perish.(CO)
And when they come to see me, they utter empty words
    while their hearts gather mischief;
    when they go out, they tell it abroad.(CP)
All who hate me whisper together about me;
    they imagine the worst for me.(CQ)

They think that a deadly thing has fastened on me,
    that I will not rise again from where I lie.(CR)
Even my close friend in whom I trusted,
    who ate of my bread, has lifted the heel against me.(CS)
10 But you, O Lord, be gracious to me,
    and raise me up, that I may repay them.(CT)

11 By this I know that you are pleased with me:
    because my enemy has not triumphed over me.(CU)
12 But you have upheld me because of my integrity
    and set me in your presence forever.(CV)

13 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.
                Amen and Amen.(CW)

Book II

(Psalms 42–72)

Psalm 42

Longing for God and His Help in Distress

To the leader. A Maskil of the Korahites.

As a deer longs for flowing streams,
    so my soul longs for you, O God.(CX)
My soul thirsts for God,
    for the living God.
When shall I come and behold
    the face of God?(CY)
My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me continually,
    “Where is your God?”(CZ)

These things I remember,
    as I pour out my soul:
how I went with the throng[n]
    and led them in procession to the house of God,
with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving,
    a multitude keeping festival.(DA)
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise him,
my help(DB)     and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;
    therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,
    from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
    at the thunder of your torrents;
all your waves and your billows
    have gone over me.(DC)
By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,
    and at night his song is with me,
    a prayer to the God of my life.(DD)

I say to God, my rock,
    “Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I walk about mournfully
    because the enemy oppresses me?”(DE)
10 As with a deadly wound in my body,
    my adversaries taunt me,
while they say to me continually,
    “Where is your God?”(DF)

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise him,
    my help and my God.(DG)

Psalm 43

Prayer to God in Time of Trouble

Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
    against an ungodly people;
from those who are deceitful and unjust,
    deliver me!(DH)
For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
    why have you cast me off?
Why must I walk about mournfully
    because of the oppression of the enemy?(DI)

O send out your light and your truth;
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
    and to your dwelling.(DJ)
Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the harp,
    O God, my God.(DK)

Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise him,
    my help and my God.(DL)

Psalm 44

National Lament and Prayer for Help

To the leader. Of the Korahites. A Maskil.

We have heard with our ears, O God;
    our ancestors have told us
what deeds you performed in their days,
    in the days of old:(DM)
you with your own hand drove out the nations,
    but them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
    but them you set free;(DN)
for not by their own sword did they win the land,
    nor did their own arm give them victory,
but your right hand, and your arm,
    and the light of your countenance,
    for you delighted in them.(DO)

You are my King and my God;
    you command[o] victories for Jacob.
Through you we push down our foes;
    through your name we tread down our assailants.(DP)
For not in my bow do I trust,
    nor can my sword save me.
But you have saved us from our foes
    and have put to confusion those who hate us.(DQ)
In God we have boasted continually,
    and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah(DR)

Yet you have rejected us and shamed us
    and have not gone out with our armies.(DS)
10 You made us turn back from the foe,
    and our enemies have gotten spoil.(DT)
11 You have made us like sheep for slaughter
    and have scattered us among the nations.(DU)
12 You have sold your people for a trifle,
    demanding no high price for them.(DV)

13 You have made us the taunt of our neighbors,
    the derision and scorn of those around us.(DW)
14 You have made us a byword among the nations,
    a laughingstock[p] among the peoples.(DX)
15 All day long my disgrace is before me,
    and shame has covered my face
16 at the words of the taunters and revilers,
    at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.(DY)

17 All this has come upon us,
    yet we have not forgotten you
    or been false to your covenant.(DZ)
18 Our heart has not turned back,
    nor have our steps departed from your way,(EA)
19 yet you have broken us in the haunt of jackals
    and covered us with deep darkness.(EB)

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a strange god,(EC)
21 would not God discover this?
    For he knows the secrets of the heart.(ED)
22 Because of you we are being killed all day long
    and accounted as sheep for the slaughter.(EE)

23 Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord?
    Awake, do not cast us off forever!(EF)
24 Why do you hide your face?
    Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?(EG)
25 For we sink down to the dust;
    our bodies cling to the ground.(EH)
26 Rise up, come to our help.
    Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love.(EI)

Psalm 45

Ode for a Royal Wedding

To the leader: according to Lilies. Of the Korahites. A Maskil. A love song.

My heart overflows with a goodly theme;
    I address my verses to the king;
    my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.(EJ)

You are the most handsome of men;
    grace is poured upon your lips;
    therefore God has blessed you forever.(EK)
Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one,
    in your glory and majesty.(EL)

In your majesty ride on victoriously
    for the cause of truth and to defend[q] the right;
    let your right hand teach you dread deeds.(EM)
Your arrows are sharp
    in the heart of the king’s enemies;
    the peoples fall under you.

Your throne, O God,[r] endures forever and ever.
    Your royal scepter is a scepter of equity;(EN)
    you love righteousness and hate wickedness.
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you
    with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;(EO)
    your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia.
From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad;(EP)
    daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor;
    at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.(EQ)

10 Hear, O daughter, consider and incline your ear;
    forget your people and your father’s house,(ER)
11     and the king will desire your beauty.
Since he is your lord, bow to him;(ES)
12     Daughter Tyre will seek your favor with gifts,
the richest of the people(ET) 13     with all kinds of wealth.

The princess is decked in her chamber with gold-woven robes;[s](EU)
14     in many-colored robes she is led to the king;
    behind her the virgins, her companions, follow.(EV)
15 With joy and gladness they are led along
    as they enter the palace of the king.

16 In the place of ancestors you, O king,[t] shall have sons;
    you will make them princes in all the earth.(EW)
17 I will cause your name to be celebrated in all generations;
    therefore the peoples will praise you forever and ever.(EX)
