Psalm 104

Psalm 104
God the Creator
1 My soul, bless the Lord!
Lord my God, you are very great;
you are clothed with majesty and splendor.(A)
2 He wraps himself in light as if it were a robe,
spreading out the sky like a canopy,(B)
3 laying the beams of his palace
on the waters above,(C)
making the clouds his chariot,(D)
walking on the wings of the wind,(E)
4 and making the winds his messengers,[a]
flames of fire his servants.(F)
5 He established the earth on its foundations;
it will never be shaken.(G)
6 You covered it with the deep
as if it were a garment;
the water stood above the mountains.(H)
7 At your rebuke the water fled;
at the sound of your thunder they hurried away(I)—
8 mountains rose and valleys sank[b]—
to the place you established for them.(J)
9 You set a boundary they cannot cross;
they will never cover the earth again.(K)
10 He causes the springs to gush into the valleys;
they flow between the mountains.(L)
11 They supply water for every wild beast;
the wild donkeys quench their thirst.(M)
12 The birds of the sky live beside the springs;
they make their voices heard among the foliage.(N)
13 He waters the mountains from his palace;
the earth is satisfied by the fruit of your labor.(O)
14 He causes grass to grow for the livestock
and provides crops for man to cultivate,
producing food from the earth,(P)
15 wine that makes human hearts glad—
making his face shine with oil—
and bread that sustains human hearts.(Q)
16 The trees of the Lord flourish,[c]
the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.(R)
17 There the birds make their nests;
storks make their homes in the pine trees.(S)
18 The high mountains are for the wild goats;
the cliffs are a refuge for hyraxes.(T)
19 He made the moon to mark the[d] festivals;[e]
the sun knows when to set.(U)
20 You bring darkness, and it becomes night,
when all the forest animals stir.(V)
21 The young lions roar for their prey
and seek their food from God.(W)
22 The sun rises; they go back
and lie down in their dens.(X)
23 Man goes out to his work
and to his labor until evening.(Y)
24 How countless are your works, Lord!
In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.[f](Z)
25 Here is the sea, vast and wide,
teeming with creatures beyond number—
living things both large and small.(AA)
26 There the ships move about,
and Leviathan, which you formed to play there.(AB)
27 All of them wait for you
to give them their food at the right time.(AC)
28 When you give it to them,
they gather it;
when you open your hand,
they are satisfied with good things.(AD)
29 When you hide your face,
they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,
they die and return to the dust.(AE)
30 When you send your breath,[g]
they are created,(AF)
and you renew the surface of the ground.(AG)
31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
may the Lord rejoice in his works.(AH)
32 He looks at the earth, and it trembles;
he touches the mountains,
and they pour out smoke.(AI)
33 I will sing to the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God while I live.(AJ)
34 May my meditation be pleasing to him;
I will rejoice in the Lord.(AK)
35 May sinners vanish from the earth
and wicked people be no more.(AL)
My soul, bless the Lord!
Hallelujah!

Undeserved Suffering
13 Who then will harm you if you are devoted to what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness,(A) you are blessed. Do not fear them[a](B) or be intimidated,[b](C) 15 but in your hearts regard[c] Christ[d] the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.(D) 16 Yet do this with gentleness and reverence, keeping a clear conscience,(E) so that when you are accused,[e] those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer(F) for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.
18 For Christ also suffered(G) for sins once for all,(H) the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God.(I) He was put to death in the flesh[f](J) but made alive by the Spirit,[g] 19 in which[h] he also went and made proclamation to the spirits(K) in prison 20 who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah(L) while the ark was being prepared. In it a few—that is, eight people[i](M)—were saved through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not as the removal of dirt from the body,(N) but the pledge[j] of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(O) 22 who has gone into heaven(P) and is at the right hand of God(Q) with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.(R)
Following Christ
4 Therefore, since Christ suffered[k] in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding[l]—because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished(S) with sin[m]— 2 in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God’s will.(T) 3 For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires,(U) drunkenness, orgies,(V) carousing, and lawless idolatry. 4 They are surprised that you don’t join them in the same flood of wild living—and they slander[n] you. 5 They will give an account to the one who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.(W) 6 For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead,[o](X) so that, although they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards,(Y) they might live(Z) in the spirit according to God’s standards.
End-Time Ethics
7 The end of all things is near;(AA) therefore, be alert and sober-minded(AB) for prayer. 8 Above all, maintain constant love(AC) for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.[p](AD) 9 Be hospitable(AE) to one another without complaining. 10 Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others,(AF) as good stewards of the varied grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God’s words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides,(AG) so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
Christian Suffering
12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you, as if something unusual were happening to you.(AH) 13 Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ,(AI) so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.(AJ) 14 If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ,(AK) you are blessed, because the Spirit(AL) of glory and of God[q] rests on you. 15 Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler.[r] 16 But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed but let him glorify God in having that name.[s] 17 For the time has come for judgment(AM) to begin with God’s household,(AN) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?
18 And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?[t](AO)
19 So then, let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust themselves(AP) to a faithful Creator while doing what is good.
