Psalm 103:1-14

Psalm 103

Of David.

¹Praise the Lord,^(A) my soul;^(B)
    all my inmost being, praise his holy name.^(C)
²Praise the Lord,^(D) my soul,
    and forget not^(E) all his benefits—
³who forgives all your sins^(F)
    and heals^(G) all your diseases,
⁴who redeems your life^(H) from the pit
    and crowns you with love and compassion,^(I)
⁵who satisfies^(J) your desires with good things
    so that your youth is renewed^(K) like the eagle’s.^(L)

⁶The Lord works righteousness^(M)
and justice for all the oppressed.^(N)

⁷He made known^(O) his ways^(P) to Moses,
    his deeds^(Q) to the people of Israel:
⁸The Lord is compassionate and gracious,^(R)
    slow to anger, abounding in love.
⁹He will not always accuse,
    nor will he harbor his anger forever;^(S)
¹⁰he does not treat us as our sins deserve^(T)
    or repay us according to our iniquities.
¹¹For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love^(U) for those who fear him;^(V)
¹²as far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions^(W) from us.

¹³As a father has compassion^(X) on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
¹⁴for he knows how we are formed,^(Y)
he remembers that we are dust.^(Z)

2 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,^(A) ²in which you used to live^(B) when you followed the ways of this world^(C) and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,^(D) the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.^(E) ³All of us also lived among them at one time,^(F) gratifying the cravings of our flesh^[a]^(G) and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. ⁴But because of his great love for us,^(H) God, who is rich in mercy, ⁵made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions^(I)—it is by grace you have been saved.^(J) ⁶And God raised us up with Christ^(K) and seated us with him^(L) in the heavenly realms^(M) in Christ Jesus, ⁷in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,^(N) expressed in his kindness^(O) to us in Christ Jesus. ⁸For it is by grace^(P) you have been saved,^(Q) through faith^(R)—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— ⁹not by works,^(S) so that no one can boast.^(T) ¹⁰For we are God’s handiwork,^(U) created^(V) in Christ Jesus to do good works,^(W) which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Romans 7:15-25

New International Version

¹⁵I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.^(A) ¹⁶And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.^(B) ¹⁷As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.^(C) ¹⁸For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.^[a]^(D) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. ¹⁹For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.^(E) ²⁰Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.^(F)

²¹So I find this law at work:^(G) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. ²²For in my inner being^(H) I delight in God’s law;^(I) ²³but I see another law at work in me, waging war^(J) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin^(K) at work within me. ²⁴What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?^(L) ²⁵Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!^(M)
