101 I will sing about your loving-kindness and your justice, Lord. I will sing your praises!

I will try to walk a blameless path, but how I need your help, especially in my own home, where I long to act as I should.

Help me to refuse the low and vulgar things; help me to abhor all crooked deals of every kind, to have no part in them. I will reject all selfishness and stay away from every evil. I will not tolerate anyone who secretly slanders his neighbors; I will not permit conceit and pride. I will make the godly of the land my heroes and invite them to my home. Only those who are truly good shall be my servants. But I will not allow those who deceive and lie to stay in my house. My daily task will be to ferret out criminals and free the city of God from their grip.

101 I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O Lord, will I sing.

I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.

Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.

He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the Lord.

I Will Walk with Integrity

A Psalm of David.

101 I will sing of (A)steadfast love and justice;
    to you, O Lord, I will make music.
I will (B)ponder the way (C)that is blameless.
    Oh when will you (D)come to me?
I will (E)walk with (F)integrity of heart
    within my house;
I will not set before my eyes
    anything (G)that is worthless.
I hate the work of those who (H)fall away;
    it shall not cling to me.
(I)A perverse heart shall be far from me;
    I will (J)know nothing of evil.

Whoever slanders his neighbor (K)secretly
    I will (L)destroy.
Whoever has a (M)haughty look and an (N)arrogant heart
    I will not endure.

I will look with favor on the faithful in the land,
    that they may dwell with me;
he who walks in (O)the way that is blameless
    shall minister to me.

No one who (P)practices deceit
    shall dwell in my house;
no one who utters lies
    shall (Q)continue before my eyes.

(R)Morning by morning I will destroy
    all the wicked in the land,
(S)cutting off all (T)the evildoers
    from (U)the city of the Lord.

Psalm 101

The Good Ruler

Heading
By David. A psalm.

The Righteousness of the Lord

I will sing about your mercy and justice.
To you, O Lord, I will make music.

The Righteousness of the King

I will act wisely, following the way that is honest.
When will you come to me?
Within my palace I will conduct myself with integrity.[a]

Righteousness in His Court

I will not tolerate an evil[b] cause in my sight.
I hate unfaithfulness and apostasy.[c]
It will not stick to me.
A perverted heart shall be kept far from me.
I will not acknowledge evil.
I will silence anyone who slanders his neighbor in secret.
I cannot tolerate anyone who has arrogant eyes and a proud heart.
My eyes will watch for the faithful in the land,
so that they can be seated with me.
Those who walk in the way of integrity will serve as my ministers.
Anyone who practices deceit will not sit inside my palace.
Anyone who is a liar will not stand in my sight.
Every morning I will silence all the wicked in the land,
in order to cut off every evildoer from the city of the Lord.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 101:2 More literally I will walk around in my house with wholeness of heart
  2. Psalm 101:3 Or devilish. The Hebrew word is belial, which means without restraint or without worth. In late Hebrew it became a name of Satan.
  3. Psalm 101:3 The meaning of the line is uncertain. It seems to read I hate doing of apostasies.
