Psalm 10:14-18:50

^16 (F)The Lord is king forever and ever;
    the ^(G)nations perish from his land.
¹⁷ O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
    you will ^(H)strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
¹⁸ to ^(I)do justice to the fatherless and ^(J)the oppressed,
    so that ^(K)man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.

^4 (P)The Lord is in his holy temple;
    the Lord's ^(Q)throne is in heaven;
    his eyes see, his eyelids ^(R)test the children of man.
⁵ The Lord ^(S)tests the righteous,
    but ^(T)his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.
⁶ Let him rain coals on the wicked;
    ^(U)fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be ^(V)the portion of their cup.
⁷ For the Lord is righteous;
he ^(W)loves righteous deeds;
    ^(X)the upright shall behold his face.

³ May the Lord cut off all ^(AC)flattering lips,
    the tongue that makes ^(AD)great boasts,
⁴ those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
    our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

⁵ “Because ^(AE)the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,
    ^(AF)I will now arise,” says the Lord;
    “I will place him in the ^(AG)safety for which he longs.”
^6 (AH)The words of the Lord are pure words,
    like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
    purified seven times.

⁷ You, O Lord, will keep them;
    you will guard us^[c] from this generation forever.
⁸ On every side the wicked prowl,
    as vileness is exalted among the children of man.

^3 (AM)Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
    ^(AN)light up my eyes, lest ^(AO)I sleep the sleep of death,
^4 (AP)lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
    lest my foes rejoice because I am ^(AQ)shaken.

⁵ But I have ^(AR)trusted in your steadfast love;
    my heart shall ^(AS)rejoice in your salvation.
⁶ I will sing to the Lord,
    because he has dealt bountifully with me.

² The Lord ^(AY)looks down from heaven on the children of man,
    to see if there are any who understand,^[d]
    who ^(AZ)seek after God.

³ They have all turned aside; together they have become ^(BA)corrupt;
    there is none who does good,
    not even one.

⁴ Have they no ^(BB)knowledge, all the evildoers
    who ^(BC)eat up my people as they eat bread
    and ^(BD)do not call upon the Lord?

⁵ There they are in great terror,
    for God is with ^(BE)the generation of the righteous.
⁶ You would shame the plans of the poor,
    but^[e] the Lord is his ^(BF)refuge.

⁷ Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When the Lord ^(BG)restores the fortunes of his people,
    let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

² He who ^(BK)walks blamelessly and ^(BL)does what is right
    and ^(BM)speaks truth in his heart;
³ who ^(BN)does not slander with his tongue
    and does no evil to his neighbor,
    nor ^(BO)takes up a reproach against his friend;
^4 (BP)in whose eyes a vile person is despised,
    but who honors those who fear the Lord;
who ^(BQ)swears to his own hurt and does not change;
⁵ who ^(BR)does not put out his money at interest
    and ^(BS)does not take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things shall never be ^(BT)moved.

³ As for ^(BX)the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.^[g]

⁴ The sorrows of those who run after^[h] another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or ^(BY)take their names on my lips.

⁵ The Lord is ^(BZ)my chosen portion and my ^(CA)cup;
    you hold my ^(CB)lot.
^6 (CC)The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

⁷ I bless the Lord who ^(CD)gives me counsel;
    in ^(CE)the night also my ^(CF)heart instructs me.^[i]
8 (CG)I have ^(CH)set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my ^(CI)right hand, I shall not be ^(CJ)shaken.

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad, and my ^(CK)whole being^[j] rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
¹⁰ For you will not abandon my soul to ^(CL)Sheol,
    ^(CM)or let your ^(CN)holy one see ^(CO)corruption.^[k]

¹¹ You make known to me ^(CP)the path of life;
    in your presence there is ^(CQ)fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are ^(CR)pleasures forevermore.

³ You have ^(CV)tried my heart, you have ^(CW)visited me by ^(CX)night,
    you have ^(CY)tested me, and you will find nothing;
    I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.
⁴ With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips
    I have avoided the ways of the violent.
⁵ My steps have ^(CZ)held fast to your paths;
    my feet have not slipped.

⁶ I ^(DA)call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
    ^(DB)incline your ear to me; hear my words.
^7 (DC)Wondrously show^[l] your steadfast love,
    O Savior of those who seek refuge
    from ^(DD)their adversaries at your right hand.

⁸ Keep me as ^(DE)the apple of your eye;
    hide me in ^(DF)the shadow of your wings,
⁹ from the wicked who do me violence,
    my deadly enemies who ^(DG)surround me.

^10 (DH)They close their hearts to pity;
    with their mouths they ^(DI)speak arrogantly.
¹¹ They have now surrounded our ^(DJ)steps;
    they set their eyes to ^(DK)cast us to the ground.
¹² He is like a lion eager to tear,
    as a young lion ^(DL)lurking in ambush.

¹³ Arise, O Lord! Confront him, subdue him!
    Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,
¹⁴ from men by your hand, O Lord,
    from ^(DM)men of the world whose ^(DN)portion is in this life.^[m]
You fill their womb with treasure;^[n]
    they are satisfied with ^(DO)children,
    and they leave their abundance to their infants.

¹⁵ As for me, I shall ^(DP)behold your face in righteousness;
    when I ^(DQ)awake, I shall be ^(DR)satisfied with your likeness.

^4 (ED)The cords of death encompassed me;
    ^(EE)the torrents of destruction assailed me;^[o]
5 (EF)the cords of Sheol entangled me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

^6 (EG)In my distress I called upon the Lord;
    to my God I cried for help.
From his ^(EH)temple he heard my voice,
    and my cry to him reached his ears.

⁷ Then the earth ^(EI)reeled and rocked;
    the foundations also of the mountains trembled
    and quaked, because he was angry.
⁸ Smoke went up from his nostrils,^[p]
    and devouring ^(EJ)fire from his mouth;
    glowing coals flamed forth from him.
⁹ He ^(EK)bowed the heavens and ^(EL)came down;
    ^(EM)thick darkness was under his feet.
¹⁰ He rode on a cherub and flew;
    he came swiftly on ^(EN)the wings of the wind.
¹¹ He made darkness his covering, his ^(EO)canopy around him,
    thick clouds ^(EP)dark with water.
¹² Out of the brightness before him
    ^(EQ)hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.

¹³ The Lord also ^(ER)thundered in the heavens,
    and the Most High uttered his ^(ES)voice,
    hailstones and coals of fire.
¹⁴ And he sent out his ^(ET)arrows and scattered them;
    he flashed forth lightnings and ^(EU)routed them.
¹⁵ Then ^(EV)the channels of the sea were seen,
    and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your ^(EW)rebuke, O Lord,
    at the blast of ^(EX)the breath of your nostrils.

¹⁶ He ^(EY)sent from on high, he took me;
    he ^(EZ)drew me out of ^(FA)many waters.
¹⁷ He rescued me from my strong enemy
    and from those who hated me,
    for they were ^(FB)too mighty for me.
¹⁸ They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.
¹⁹ He brought me out into ^(FC)a broad place;
    he rescued me, because he ^(FD)delighted in me.

²⁰ The Lord dealt with me ^(FE)according to my righteousness;
    according to ^(FF)the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
²¹ For I have ^(FG)kept the ways of the Lord,
    and have not wickedly departed from my God.
²² For ^(FH)all his rules^[q] were before me,
    and his statutes I did not put away from me.
²³ I was ^(FI)blameless before him,
    and I kept myself from my guilt.
²⁴ So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

²⁵ With ^(FJ)the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
²⁶ with the purified you show yourself pure;
    and with ^(FK)the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
²⁷ For you save ^(FL)a humble people,
    but ^(FM)the haughty eyes you bring down.
²⁸ For it is you who light my ^(FN)lamp;
    the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
²⁹ For by you I can run against a troop,
    and by my God I can ^(FO)leap over ^(FP)a wall.
³⁰ This God—his way is ^(FQ)perfect;^[r]
    the word of the Lord ^(FR)proves true;
    he is ^(FS)a shield for all those who ^(FT)take refuge in him.

³¹ For ^(FU)who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is ^(FV)a rock, except our God?—
³² the God who ^(FW)equipped me with strength
    and made my way ^(FX)blameless.
³³ He made my feet like the feet of a ^(FY)deer
    and set me secure on ^(FZ)the heights.
³⁴ He ^(GA)trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
³⁵ You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your right hand ^(GB)supported me,
    and your ^(GC)gentleness made me great.
³⁶ You ^(GD)gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip.
³⁷ I pursued my enemies and overtook them,
    and did not turn back till they were consumed.
³⁸ I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise;
    they fell under my feet.
³⁹ For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
    you made those who rise against me sink under me.
⁴⁰ You made my enemies ^(GE)turn their backs to me,^[s]
    and those who hated me I destroyed.
^41 (GF)They cried for help, but there was none to save;
    they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
⁴² I beat them fine as ^(GG)dust before the wind;
    I cast them out like ^(GH)the mire of the streets.

⁴³ You delivered me from ^(GI)strife with the people;
    you made me ^(GJ)the head of the nations;
    ^(GK)people whom I had not known served me.
⁴⁴ As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;
    ^(GL)foreigners ^(GM)came cringing to me.
^45 (GN)Foreigners lost heart
    and ^(GO)came trembling out of their fortresses.

⁴⁶ The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation—
⁴⁷ the God who gave me vengeance
    and ^(GP)subdued peoples under me,
⁴⁸ who rescued me from my enemies;
    yes, you ^(GQ)exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you delivered me from ^(GR)the man of violence.

^49 (GS)For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and ^(GT)sing to your name.
⁵⁰ Great ^(GU)salvation he brings to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to his ^(GV)anointed,
    to ^(GW)David and his offspring forever.
