Psalm 18:21-50

English Standard Version

²¹For I have ^(A)kept the ways of the Lord,
    and have not wickedly departed from my God.
²²For ^(B)all his rules^[a] were before me,
    and his statutes I did not put away from me.
²³I was ^(C)blameless before him,
    and I kept myself from my guilt.
²⁴So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

²⁵With ^(D)the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
²⁶with the purified you show yourself pure;
    and with ^(E)the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
²⁷For you save ^(F)a humble people,
    but ^(G)the haughty eyes you bring down.
²⁸For it is you who light my ^(H)lamp;
    the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
²⁹For by you I can run against a troop,
    and by my God I can ^(I)leap over ^(J)a wall.
³⁰This God—his way is ^(K)perfect;^[b]
    the word of the Lord ^(L)proves true;
    he is ^(M)a shield for all those who ^(N)take refuge in him.

³¹For ^(O)who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is ^(P)a rock, except our God?—
³²the God who ^(Q)equipped me with strength
    and made my way ^(R)blameless.
³³He made my feet like the feet of a ^(S)deer
    and set me secure on ^(T)the heights.
³⁴He ^(U)trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
³⁵You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your right hand ^(V)supported me,
    and your ^(W)gentleness made me great.
³⁶You ^(X)gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip.
³⁷I pursued my enemies and overtook them,
    and did not turn back till they were consumed.
³⁸I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise;
    they fell under my feet.
³⁹For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
    you made those who rise against me sink under me.
⁴⁰You made my enemies ^(Y)turn their backs to me,^[c]
    and those who hated me I destroyed.
⁴¹^(Z)They cried for help, but there was none to save;
    they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
⁴²I beat them fine as ^(AA)dust before the wind;
    I cast them out like ^(AB)the mire of the streets.

⁴³You delivered me from ^(AC)strife with the people;
    you made me ^(AD)the head of the nations;
    ^(AE)people whom I had not known served me.
⁴⁴As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;
    ^(AF)foreigners ^(AG)came cringing to me.
⁴⁵^(AH)Foreigners lost heart
    and ^(AI)came trembling out of their fortresses.

⁴⁶The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation—
⁴⁷the God who gave me vengeance
    and ^(AJ)subdued peoples under me,
⁴⁸who rescued me from my enemies;
    yes, you ^(AK)exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you delivered me from ^(AL)the man of violence.

⁴⁹^(AM)For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and ^(AN)sing to your name.
⁵⁰Great ^(AO)salvation he brings to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to his ^(AP)anointed,
    to ^(AQ)David and his offspring forever.

The Mountain of the Lord

4 It shall come to pass ^(A)in the latter days
    that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and it shall be lifted up above the hills;
and peoples shall flow to it,
²    and many nations shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,^[a]
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
³He shall judge between many peoples,
    and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away;
and they shall ^(B)beat their swords into plowshares,
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war anymore;
⁴^(C)but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree,
    ^(D)and no one shall make them afraid,
    ^(E)for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.
⁵For ^(F)all the peoples walk
    each in the name of its god,
but ^(G)we will walk in the name of the Lord our God
    forever and ever.

The Lord Shall Rescue Zion

⁶^(H)In that day, declares the Lord,
    ^(I)I will assemble the ^(J)lame
and gather those who have been driven away
    and those whom I have afflicted;
⁷and the lame I will make ^(K)the remnant,
    and those who were cast off, a strong nation;
and ^(L)the Lord will reign over them ^(M)in Mount Zion
    from this time forth and forevermore.

⁸And you, O tower of the flock,
    hill of the daughter of Zion,
to you shall it come,
    the former dominion shall come,
    kingship for the daughter of Jerusalem.

⁹Now why do you cry aloud?
    ^(N)Is there no king in you?
^(O)Has your counselor perished,
    that ^(P)pain seized you like a woman in labor?
¹⁰^(Q)Writhe and groan,^[b] O daughter of Zion,
    like a woman in labor,
for ^(R)now you shall go out from the city
    and dwell in the open country;
    you ^(S)shall go to Babylon.
There you shall be rescued;
    ^(T)there the Lord will redeem you
    from the hand of your enemies.

¹¹Now ^(U)many nations
    are assembled against you,
saying, “Let her be defiled,
    and ^(V)let our eyes gaze upon Zion.”
¹²But ^(W)they do not know
    the thoughts of the Lord;
they do not understand his plan,
    that ^(X)he has gathered them as sheaves to the threshing floor.
¹³Arise and thresh,
    O daughter of Zion,
for I will make your horn iron,
    and I will make your hoofs bronze;
you shall beat in pieces many peoples;
    and ^(Y)shall devote^[c] ^(Z)their gain to the Lord,
    their wealth to ^(AA)the Lord of the whole earth.

Judging Others

7 ^(A)“Judge not, that you be not judged. ²^(B)For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and ^(C)with the measure you use it will be measured to you. ³Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but ^(D)do not notice the log that is in your own eye? ⁴Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? ⁵You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

⁶^(E)“Do not give ^(F)dogs what is holy, and do not throw your ^(G)pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

Ask, and It Will Be Given

⁷^(H)“Ask, ^(I)and it will be given to you; ^(J)seek, and you will find; ^(K)knock, and it will be opened to you. ⁸For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. ⁹Or which one of you, if his son asks him for ^(L)bread, will give him ^(M)a stone? ¹⁰Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? ¹¹If you then, ^(N)who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will ^(O)your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

The Golden Rule

¹²“So ^(P)whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is ^(Q)the Law and the Prophets.

¹³^(R)“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy^[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. ¹⁴For the gate is narrow and ^(S)the way is hard that leads to life, and ^(T)those who find it are few.

A Tree and Its Fruit

¹⁵^(U)“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ^(V)ravenous wolves. ¹⁶You will recognize them ^(W)by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? ¹⁷So, ^(X)every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. ¹⁹^(Y)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ²⁰Thus you will recognize them ^(Z)by their fruits.

I Never Knew You

²¹^(AA)“Not everyone who ^(AB)says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will ^(AC)enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who ^(AD)does the will of my Father who is in heaven. ²²^(AE)On that day ^(AF)many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not ^(AG)prophesy in your name, and cast out demons ^(AH)in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ ²³^(AI)And then will I declare to them, ‘I ^(AJ)never knew you; ^(AK)depart from me, ^(AL)you workers of lawlessness.’

Build Your House on the Rock

²⁴^(AM)“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like ^(AN)a wise man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. ²⁶And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like ^(AO)a foolish man who built his house on the sand. ²⁷And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

The Authority of Jesus

²⁸And when Jesus finished these sayings, ^(AP)the crowds were astonished at his teaching, ²⁹^(AQ)for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
