Blessed Are the Forgiven

32 ^(A)Blessed is the one whose ^(B)transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
²Blessed is the man against whom the Lord ^(C)counts no iniquity,
and in whose spirit ^(D)there is no deceit.

³For when I kept silent, my ^(E)bones wasted away
through my ^(F)groaning all day long.
⁴For day and night your ^(G)hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up^[b] as by the heat of summer. Selah

⁵I ^(H)acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I ^(I)will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

⁶Therefore let everyone who is ^(J)godly
    offer prayer to you at a time when you ^(K)may be found;
surely in the rush of ^(L)great waters,
    they shall not reach him.
⁷You are a ^(M)hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from ^(N)trouble;
    you surround me with ^(O)shouts of deliverance. Selah

⁸I will ^(P)instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will ^(Q)counsel you with my eye upon you.
⁹^(R)Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
    which must be curbed with ^(S)bit and bridle,
    or it will not stay near you.

¹⁰^(T)Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
but steadfast love surrounds the one who ^(U)trusts in the Lord.
¹¹^(V)Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
and ^(W)shout for joy, all you ^(X)upright in heart!

How Precious Is Your Steadfast Love

36 Transgression speaks to the wicked
    deep in his heart;^[a]
^(B)there is no fear of God
    before his eyes.
²^(C)For he flatters himself in his own eyes
    that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
³The words of his mouth are ^(D)trouble and deceit;
    ^(E)he has ceased to act wisely and do good.
⁴He ^(F)plots ^(G)trouble while on his bed;
    he sets himself in ^(H)a way that is not good;
    ^(I)he does not reject evil.

⁵Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the clouds.
⁶^(J)Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    ^(K)your judgments are like the great deep;
    man and beast you ^(L)save, O Lord.

⁷^(M)How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
    The children of mankind take refuge ^(N)in the shadow of your wings.
⁸They feast on ^(O)the abundance of your house,
    and you give them drink from ^(P)the river of ^(Q)your delights.

The Philistines and the Ark

5 When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they brought it from ^(A)Ebenezer to ^(B)Ashdod. ²Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside ^(C)Dagon. ³And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, ^(D)Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. ⁴But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord, ^(E)and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. ⁵This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon ^(F)do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

⁶^(G)The hand of the Lord was heavy against the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with ^(H)tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. ⁷And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for his hand is hard against us and against Dagon our god.” ⁸So they sent and gathered together all ^(I)the lords of the Philistines and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. ⁹But after they had brought it around, ^(J)the hand of the Lord was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that ^(K)tumors broke out on them. ¹⁰So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But as soon as the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our people.” ¹¹^(L)They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our people.” For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. ^(M)The hand of God was very heavy there. ¹²The men who did not die were struck with ^(N)tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

Prophecy and Tongues

14 ^(A)Pursue love, and ^(B)earnestly desire the ^(C)spiritual gifts, especially that you may ^(D)prophesy. ²For ^(E)one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. ³On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. ⁴The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. ⁵Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but ^(F)even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

⁶Now, brothers,^[a] if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some ^(G)revelation or knowledge or prophecy or ^(H)teaching? ⁷If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? ⁸And ^(I)if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? ⁹So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be ^(J)speaking into the air. ¹⁰There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, ¹¹but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be ^(K)a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. ¹²So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

¹³Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. ¹⁴For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. ¹⁵What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; ^(L)I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will ^(M)sing with my mind also. ¹⁶Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider^[b] say ^(N)“Amen” to ^(O)your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? ¹⁷For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. ¹⁸I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. ¹⁹Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
