Psalm 97

The Eternal reigns powerful over all;
    let the earth sing with joy;
    let the distant islands celebrate.
Clouds and deep darkness encircle Him;
    righteousness and justice are the bedrock of His rule.
Fire precedes Him;
    it burns away His opponents on all sides.
With His lightning flashing about, He illuminates the world;
    the earth watches and trembles.
Like wax before the flame, mountains melt when the Eternal appears,
    the Master of the whole earth.

The heavens display His order and perfect justice;
    all peoples witness His magnificence.
Those who worship idols,
    who boast in the impotent creations of human hands, will be shamed.
    Worship Him, all you gods.
Zion heard and was glad,
    and the daughters of Judah celebrated
    because they saw Your justice, O Eternal One.
For You are the Eternal, the Most High, over the entire world;
    You far exceed all gods.

10 Hate evil, you lovers of the Eternal.
    He protects the souls of those who follow Him;
    He rescues them from the devices of the wicked.
11 Light is sown in the just;
    as it grows, it brings joy to the pure of heart.
12 Celebrate the Eternal God, all you who are faithful;
    offer thanks to His holy name.

  1. Psalm 97:11 One Hebrew manuscript and ancient versions (see also 112:4); most Hebrew manuscripts Light is sown

Moses: 18 If Your presence will go with us, then let me see Your glory!

Eternal One: 19 I will cause all My goodness to pass before you, and I will declare My name, the Eternal One, before you. I will show mercy to whomever I choose to show mercy, and I will demonstrate compassion on whomever I choose to have compassion.[a] 20 You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live. 21 Look, there is a place next to Me on the rock where you may stand. 22 While My glory is passing by you, I will place you in a large crevice of the rock and hide you beneath My hand until I have completely passed by. 23 Then I will remove My hand, and you will see only My back. But you won’t be able to see My face.

18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”(A)

19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass(B) in front of you, and I will proclaim my name,(C) the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.(D) 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see(E) me and live.”

21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock(F) and cover you with my hand(G) until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

14 The Voice took on flesh and became human and chose to live alongside us. We have seen Him, enveloped in undeniable splendor—the one true Son of the Father—evidenced in the perfect balance of grace and truth. 15 John the Baptist testified about Him and shouted, “This is the one I’ve been telling you is coming. He is much greater than I am because He existed long before me.” 16 Through this man we all receive gifts of grace beyond our imagination. 17 You see, Moses gave us rules to live by, but Jesus the Anointed offered us gifts of grace and truth. 18 God, unseen until now, is revealed in the Voice, God’s only Son, straight from the Father’s heart.

14 The Word became flesh(A) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,(B) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace(C) and truth.(D)

15 (John testified(E) concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)(F) 16 Out of his fullness(G) we have all received grace(H) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(I) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(J) 18 No one has ever seen God,(K) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[a](L) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
