The Lord Reigns

97 ^(A)The Lord reigns, ^(B)let the earth rejoice;
    let the many ^(C)coastlands be glad!
²^(D)Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
    ^(E)righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
³^(F)Fire goes before him
    and burns up his adversaries all around.
⁴His ^(G)lightnings light up the world;
    the earth sees and ^(H)trembles.
⁵The mountains ^(I)melt like ^(J)wax before the Lord,
    before ^(K)the Lord of all the earth.

⁶^(L)The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    and all ^(M)the peoples see his glory.
⁷All worshipers of images are ^(N)put to shame,
    who make their boast in ^(O)worthless idols;
    ^(P)worship him, all you gods!

⁸Zion hears and ^(Q)is glad,
    and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
    because of your judgments, O Lord.
⁹For you, O Lord, are ^(R)most high over all the earth;
    you are exalted far above ^(S)all gods.

¹⁰O you who love the Lord, ^(T)hate evil!
    He ^(U)preserves the lives of his ^(V)saints;
    he ^(W)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
¹¹^(X)Light ^(Y)is sown^[a] for the righteous,
    and joy for the upright in heart.
¹²^(Z)Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
    and ^(AA)give thanks to his holy name!

    let the distant shores^(C) rejoice.
²Clouds^(D) and thick darkness^(E) surround him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.^(F)
³Fire^(G) goes before^(H) him
    and consumes^(I) his foes on every side.
⁴His lightning^(J) lights up the world;
    the earth^(K) sees and trembles.^(L)
⁵The mountains melt^(M) like wax^(N) before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.^(O)
⁶The heavens proclaim his righteousness,^(P)

those who boast in idols^(T)—
worship him,^(U) all you gods!^(V)

⁸Zion hears and rejoices

¹⁰Let those who love the Lord hate evil,^(AB)
    for he guards^(AC) the lives of his faithful ones^(AD)

    You have established equity;
you have executed justice
    and righteousness in Jacob.

Keep the Sabbath Holy

¹⁹Thus said the Lord to me: “Go and stand in the People's Gate, by which ^(A)the kings of Judah enter and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem, ²⁰and say: ‘Hear the word of the Lord, ^(B)you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. ²¹Thus says the Lord: Take care for the sake of your lives, and ^(C)do not bear a burden on the Sabbath day or bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem. ²²And do not carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath ^(D)or do any work, but ^(E)keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers. ²³Yet ^(F)they did not listen or incline their ear, ^(G)but stiffened their neck, that they ^(H)might not hear and receive instruction.

²⁴“‘But if you listen to me, declares the Lord, and ^(I)bring in no burden by the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but ^(J)keep the Sabbath day holy and do no work on it, ²⁵then ^(K)there shall enter by the gates of this city kings and princes who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their officials, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And this city shall be inhabited forever. ²⁶And people shall come from ^(L)the cities of Judah ^(M)and the places around Jerusalem, ^(N)from the land of Benjamin, ^(O)from the Shephelah, from the hill country, ^(P)and from ^(Q)the Negeb, bringing ^(R)burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and frankincense, and ^(S)bringing thank offerings to the house of the Lord. ²⁷But if you do not listen to me, to ^(T)keep the Sabbath day holy, ^(U)and not to bear a burden and enter by the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will ^(V)kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall ^(W)devour the palaces of Jerusalem and ^(X)shall not be quenched.’”

Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy

¹⁹This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and stand at the Gate of the People,^[a] through which the kings of Judah go in and out; stand also at all the other gates of Jerusalem.^(A) ²⁰Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah and all people of Judah and everyone living in Jerusalem^(B) who come through these gates.^(C) ²¹This is what the Lord says: Be careful not to carry a load on the Sabbath^(D) day or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem. ²²Do not bring a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your ancestors.^(E) ²³Yet they did not listen or pay attention;^(F) they were stiff-necked^(G) and would not listen or respond to discipline.^(H) ²⁴But if you are careful to obey me, declares the Lord, and bring no load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day holy^(I) by not doing any work on it, ²⁵then kings who sit on David’s throne^(J) will come through the gates of this city with their officials. They and their officials will come riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by the men of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, and this city will be inhabited forever.^(K) ²⁶People will come from the towns of Judah and the villages around Jerusalem, from the territory of Benjamin and the western foothills, from the hill country and the Negev,^(L) bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, and bringing thank offerings to the house of the Lord. ²⁷But if you do not obey^(M) me to keep the Sabbath^(N) day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire^(O) in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.’”^(P)

For ^(B)I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. ¹⁶Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with ^(C)the law, that it is good. ¹⁷So now ^(D)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. ¹⁸For I know that nothing good dwells ^(E)in me, that is, in my flesh. ²¹So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. ²²For ^(H)I delight in the law of God, ^(I)in my inner being, ²³but I see in my members ^(J)another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. ²⁴Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from ^(K)this body of death? ²⁵Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Jesus Walks on Water

¹⁶When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, ¹⁷got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. ¹⁸The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. ¹⁹When they had rowed about three or four miles,^[a] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. ²⁰^(A)But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” ²¹Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

I Am the Bread of Life

²²On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only ^(B)one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. ²³Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord ^(C)had given thanks. ²⁴^(D)So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and ^(E)went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

²⁵When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, ^(F)“Rabbi, when did you come here?” ²⁶Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(G)you are seeking me, not because you saw ^(H)signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. ²⁷^(I)Do not work for the food that perishes, but for ^(J)the food that endures to eternal life, which ^(K)the Son of Man will give to you. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. ¹⁸A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. ¹⁹When they had rowed about three or four miles,^[a] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;^(B) and they were frightened. ²⁰But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”^(C) ²¹Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

²²The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake^(D) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.^(E) ²³Then some boats from Tiberias^(F) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.^(G) ²⁴Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

²⁵When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,^(H) when did you get here?”

²⁶Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,^(I) not because you saw the signs^(J) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. ²⁷Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures^(K) to eternal life,^(L) which the Son of Man^(M) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal^(N) of approval.”
