13 All in vain have I (A)kept my heart clean
    and (B)washed my hands in innocence.
14 For all the day long I have been (C)stricken
    and (D)rebuked (E)every morning.
15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
    I would have betrayed (F)the generation of your children.

16 But when I thought how to understand this,
    it seemed to me (G)a wearisome task,
17 until I went into (H)the sanctuary of God;
    then I discerned their (I)end.

18 Truly you set them in (J)slippery places;
    you make them fall to ruin.
19 How they are destroyed (K)in a moment,
    swept away utterly by (L)terrors!
20 Like (M)a dream when one awakes,
    O Lord, when (N)you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.
21 When my soul was embittered,
    when I was pricked in heart,
22 I was (O)brutish and ignorant;
    I was like (P)a beast toward you.

23 Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
    you (Q)hold my right hand.
24 You (R)guide me with your counsel,
    and afterward you will (S)receive me to glory.
25 (T)Whom have I in heaven but you?
    And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
26 (U)My flesh and my heart may fail,
    but God is (V)the strength[a] of my heart and my (W)portion (X)forever.

  1. Psalm 73:26 Hebrew rock

13 Surely in vain(A) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.(B)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(C)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

15 If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand(D) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary(E) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.(F)

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;(G)
    you cast them down to ruin.(H)
19 How suddenly(I) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away(J) by terrors!
20 They are like a dream(K) when one awakes;(L)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.(M)

21 When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
22 I was senseless(N) and ignorant;
    I was a brute beast(O) before you.

23 Yet I am always with you;
    you hold me by my right hand.(P)
24 You guide(Q) me with your counsel,(R)
    and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?(S)
    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.(T)
26 My flesh and my heart(U) may fail,(V)
    but God is the strength(W) of my heart
    and my portion(X) forever.
